Business Owner

Dr. Martin J. Schwartz represents an illustrious career of over 40 years of clinical experience and over 20 years of teaching experience. He obtained his DDS degree from NYU College of Dentistry in 1970 and held Attending positions at Lutheran Hospital in Brooklyn and at the Northern Dispensary of the City of New York. Dr. Schwartz enjoys teaching and has been a volunteer clinical professor at NYU College of Dentistry since 1991.

Dr. Schwartz also has a passion for magic. For many years he performed «Magic Dental Shows» in the NYC Public School system that were sponsored by Crest Toothpaste in an effort to promote dental health education. National and local media outlets, including Eyewitness News, Extra and WPIX-TV have featured the «Magic Dentist» to demonstrate the use of magic to reduce patient anxiety.

I’ve been going to this dentist for years. I think he’s a really good dentist, but at times it feels like he’s more of a business person than a dentist – often trying to sell procedures and devices (for which I am not covered by insurance). Amazingly friendly staff and the dental hygienist is great and extremely personable and friendly.

I checked Unilocal before getting a cleaning there so arrived at my appointment wary. Let me tell you– I had the OPPOSITE experience. So opposite that I felt I had to Unilocal about it! My dental hygienist Robin was so nice and knowledgable and she did a fantastic job. I really felt like she cared about the health of my teeth! It was a very nice experience and I would recommend it to anyone. I moved to this practice from a fancy uptown one and the service here was just as good, if not better.

I found the dentist very sketchy. I needed a root canal done, so he told me to schedule an appointment with an endodontist in his office. The endodontist can only come after 5pm or on the weekend.
It turned out that the endodotist was still in a residency program. They did not tell me that upfront. I had to search/ask them for more information and credential to find out. I was not comfortable with that and canceled the appointment. I don’t know if other dental offices do the same thing. But, I think if he is going to charge me and my insurance money for a service, he should not be using someone who is still learning how to become a dentist.
He does not seem to care too much about his patients/customers. The facility and equipment is run down and old. There are a lot of other better dentists with much better facilities out there. I would not go here.

AWFUL. First, I went for a routine cleaning — where the hygienist DESTROYED my gums. I’ve never experienced such a painful cleaning. The technology in that office is so out of date, they had to take xrays one appointment and have me come back in to actually see them (whether that was due to the technology or them just trying to get as much money from the insurance company I’m not sure).
Then, when they were taking care of my cavities and I asked that they use silver filling (which is a lot cheaper) for the one on top, Dr. Schwartz gave me such attitude telling me that I couldn’t decide what material they would use, that it was his decision, and that he was going to use the white. No explanation as to why, just that he said so. I’ve never been spoken to that way from a medical professional. Then he put some novacane (sp?) into the bottom gum, left a few minutes, and came back — and told me he was going to add some more and that I wouldn’t feel a thing. Literally felt the needle be jabbed directly into my nerve. So unbelievable painful. He then proceeded to tell me that I needed a root canal on my other tooth; and I chose to see a different dentist (THANK GOD) to get that taken care of. My new dentist looked at the cavity he had filled, which woke me up at 3AM from the pain, and she said that he’d given me chemical burns from keeping the novacane in my gum for too long.
Overall, just an AWFUL experience. DO NOT GO HERE.

First dentist I’ve been to since moving to NYC. I have used the same dentist my entire life back home, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to.
That being said, my first visit to Dr. Schwartz’s office was for a routine cleaning. I’ve always enjoyed the dentist and never understood why everyone always thought a trip to the dentist was such a bad thing. I understand now. The hygienist was so aggressive with my mouth! Which I appreciate, and my super clean teeth appreciate, but OW! I’ve never had a painful experience at the dentist until now. However, everyone was very polite and professional.
I went back a few days later for a referral/ex ray results. This time, I met Dr. Schwartz. He took the time to sit down and discuss [results] with me, and then even took a look to make sure everything was good with my teeth etc.
I will be returning to Dr. Schwartz, no doubt. He was super nice and informative, and very good at small talk! I am also the WORST at getting myself to a doctor/dentist and once I’ve made an initial trip to one, chances are I will be too lazy to find someone else.
Looks like my new dentist is Dr. Schwartz. I would recommend going in and checking it out for yourself.

I have to agree with Joseph. I am not thrilled with this dentist either. I didn’t really feel comfortable. The receptionists are nice but it seems like a revolving door when it comes to dental assistants.
I just did not feel comfortable with the last assistant and left before she even did the cleaning… I don’t think I’ve done that… but I got a really bad vibe from her (although she did speak English). The office is really dumpy and looks completely out of date.

I wasn’t thrilled with this dentist. I went as I haven’t had my wisdom teeth removed and i needed to know if they were impacted or not. I know my diagnosis was probably right on but a few things irked me.
1) Doesn’t seem to have put much money into the practice. It took 18 pictures to get my teeth xrayed, Last dentist I saw it was one quick xray for a full scan of the mouth. So no word on if i need to definitely get them removed. I was told «they are somewhat impacted» and in my opinion they are either impacted or they aren’t.
2) I don’t see why it takes two visits to get a diagnosis. I went through thorough teeth cleaning and had to come back for the diagnosis a week later. I’m sure they could have done it earlier than a week if i scheduled it that way, but I just wanted the whole thing in one shot and I dont’ think that is wrong.
3) The dental technition who did my cleaning did not speak english, or at least not well. It did not make for a comfortable environment.
I’m sure others will have more luck with this doctor than I did, but I just wasn’t thrilled and nothing seemed quite right. Keep in mind that this was the first time i’ve gone to a dentist in a city, so maybe rent is too high to get newer equipment.
I will be going to a doctor who can both fill my cavities as well as xray diagnose, and remove wisdom teeth rather than using different dental specialists. This doctor doesn’t seem able to meet my requirements.
