Lower East Side Printshop, founded in 1968, is a premier New York City printmaking studio supporting contemporary artists of all career and artistic backgrounds in creation of new work. Support includes facilities, time, financial, and technical assistance. Services include residencies – independent and collaborative – exhibitions, education in printmaking and career advancement skills, and peer-to-peer support.
History
Established in 1968.
The Printshop was founded by artist and educator Eleanor Magid to offer full access to prints and printmaking to all, without physical, financial, and technical barriers. For over 40 years it has continued to be a major resource for printmaking, with its groundbreaking 24-hour studio access and other services.
In 2005, the Printshop moved from the East Village to a larger facility in the Garment District. The Printshop also expanded its programming to offer more opportunities and superb services and it is growing into the major center for fine art printmaking, serving a diverse local, national, and international audience.
Artists that have worked at the Printshop include Kiki Smith, Nancy Spero and Leon Golub, Philip Taaffe, Robert Longo, Barbara Kruger, Ghada Amer, Paul Chan, Amy Cutler, Matthew Day Jackson, Glenn Ligon, Joan Linder, Ryan McGinness, Carrie Moyer, Danica Phelps, Jean Shin, Kara Walker. Recent Collaborations include Enoc Perez, Arturo Herrera, and Chris Martin.
