It was nice to experience an opening night of a Broadway show where the audience members are decked out in their evening gowns and tuxedos. Living on Love is a new Broadway show comedy that is centered around the tumultuous marriage between a couple of professional musicians. The wife, Raquel DeAngelis a.k.a. Diva, is a opera star, played by Renee Fleming in her Broadway debut. The Italian husband, Vito DeAngelis, a.k.a. Maestro, is a music conductor, played by Douglas Sills. Both characters are self absorbed and are past their prime in their music careers. The battle begins when the Diva and Maestro are racing each other to finish their own autobiography first. Each hired their own ghostwriters, Iris played by Anna Chlumsky(My Girl, 1991) and Robert played by Jerry O’Connell(My Secret Identity, television series, 1988 – 1991). Yes, I watched these movies/tv shows. Jealousy starts when the Maestro works with the pretty ghostwriter Iris and when Diva works with Robert. The story is about a typical love… square? rectangle? quadrilateral? quadrangle? Whatever, you get my drift. The Italian maestro, Vito, was funny. The highlight of the show, for me, is every scene with Renee Fleming(and her little pomeranian). I loved it when Renee Fleming sang. Ms. Fleming sang tiny little tidbits of La Boheme and Tosca. At the end she sings a charming rendition of Irving Berlin’s Always to her husband, Vito. I felt the characters of Iris and Robert fell a little flat for me. All in all, I would like just liked it even more if Renee Fleming just sang more opera. The rest of the play was only okay for me.

Living On Love is an entertaining, hirlarous play! The play is a situation comedy and not a musical; even with the opera star Renee Fleming debuting on this Broadway production that originated from the Williamstown Theatre Festival last Summer of 2014. The play is based on the Peccadillo by Garson Kanin. The opera Diva Fleming is wonderfully talented, funny and entertaining. She can really delivery her line and take command of the stage. As a real life Diva she is perfect in the role of a Diva! Fleming teases us will samples of some of her operatic voice from many operas she has performed around the world like La Boheme, Tosca and a couple of others. I am still humming Madama Butterfly this morning. Both Renee Fleming and Douglas Sills performance was outstanding. Great performance by Anna Chumsky as Iris. Jerry O’Connell was good at Robert but he is more known for films. The play is funny, entertaining and worth seeing if you are a fan of Renee Fleming.
