Having always been a fan but never an owner, imagine my delight when I walked by and noticed a store full of shiny new Leica cameras. The store was empty, save for me and three employes, chatting amongst themselves. I browsed around for a bit, tried to get someone’s attention, and after a few minutes of miserably failing, walked out, disappointed and somewhat irritated. Never mind the fact that I use a Leica microscope on a daily basis that’s worth more than the combined value of every camera in this store, or that I likely know more about optics than most of the employes, or that I would have likely walked out with a body and a few lenses had one of them taken a second to notice there was an actual customer in the store. Don’t get me wrong, I understand some places will have that hint of «snobbiness» to them — but having visited some of the ritziest of ritzy stores, and been treated like a valued customer regardless, this was an unfortunate experience. Haven’t been to the gallery part of the store, but if it’s half as snobby as the retail side, I don’t imagine I’ll be going back any time soon.

Beautiful space, absolutely wonderful photos, and some great bargains on their show posters. This is one of those great places that you should visit, especially because it is FREE!

An absolute must for photography lovers. Nice location and the space is very well laid out. The exhibit we saw was great and best of all it’s free!

For a free exhibit pretty good. Several photos of party goers in the 80s in new York. Nice!

Some good stuff, but most of the photos on display were nothing special.

Finally made it to the Leica Gallery, after several visits to Manhattan when getting there just didn’t pan out. I’m impressed. The quality of the specific exhibition I went to see aside, this place’s pluses include a lovely, well– and warmly-lit space, well-presented pictures, a smart selection of photo books and posters, the aforementioned discounted book tables, a lack of crowding– and free admission! A bonus is the frequency with which they change exhibits. A moderately frequent visitor to New York City can count on seeing something different every trip. They can certainly count on seeing me again. My only gripe? No public restroom available. If they’d put a bucket behind a tarp in the hallway, it’d be perfect.

A famous photo gallery only a couple of blocks from my office? I wish I had known about this place sooner. I went here yesterday on Jimmy N’s advice, and I was very happy to see the current exhibition showing many never before seen photos of President Obama’s first 100 days in office. Peter Souza is the official White House photographer, and he uses, you guessed it, a Leica M8.2 to render these photos. Many of the photos are quite good; they are endearing, revealing, and generally sympathetic. Cost of admission is free and they regularly have new offerings throughout the year, so there is little reason not to go. Recommend.

This is a great photo gallery! Associated with the renowned camera and lens maker, Leica Co.(the Porsche of Cameras), this gallery is for anyone who can appreciate photographic art. There is a small display of Leica cameras, optics, and binoculars. Of course, the best feature is the exhibition of featured photographers that run about 3 – 6 weeks. Like the previous Unilocal review had mentioned, there are two tables of non-used photography books at greatly discounted prices. They also have Leica coffee mugs as souvenirs. Free, entertaining, and educational, a visit to this gallery is worth the trip. Note, one can easily walk by and not know of it’s existence. Look for the Leica flag hanging out over the sidewalk and take the elevator to the 5th floor.

I have been going to Leica Gallery on Broadway since 2007, and it remains one of my favorites. Last year’s exhibits included everything from heart-warming wedding photos to heart-breaking photojournalism. Magazines like LFI and both recent and hard-to-find books are available.

Combine one part photo gallery with one part Leica reseller and you get: Photographer porn! The gallery collection was nothing special, but still was a great(and free) way to spend half an hour in a city where everything costs too damn much. Of course the highlight of the trip was seeing the gorgeous classic beauty of the Leica M8 and DigiLux cameras in person. If Trust Fund baby Hipsters knew what was good for them(and were photography enthusiasts) they would be sporting Leicas not crappy Holgas.
