Specialties
Attorneys in New York may not hold themselves out as specialists. We regularly handle criminal cases in state and federal courts both at trial an on appeal. We also handle civil lawsuits in cases of serious civil rights violations such as police brutality and wrongful conviction. We bring cases on behalf of victims of serious sex crimes. We defend people accused of bank fraud, tax fraud, health care fraud, official misconduct, drug conspiracies, sex crimes, child pornography, terrorism and other crimes. We represent doctors, lawyers, business professionals, public officials and others from all over the world. We speak Spanish fluently and hire linguists, investigators, mental health experts, computer experts and others as needed in any particular case.
History
Established in 2004.
Since 2004, the Law Office of Zachary Margulis-Ohnuma has represented clients accused of serious crimes in New York state and federal courts. We win important cases, like the reversal of a fraud conviction in 2007 where the appeals court established a new rule that a cooperating witness’s state of mind is not evidence of the defendant’s state of mind. We have won trials or obtained favorable decisions in cases alleging bank fraud, tax fraud, gun possession, sex abuse, drug trafficking, possession of child pornography and other crimes. In 2006, we won the first ever reversal of a Sex Offender Registration Act risk redetermination hearing. In 2014, our client Antonio Yarbough was exonerated after almost 22 years in prison for a triple homicide — the first of a series of men freed in Brooklyn that year. We have won large awards on behalf of the wrongfully convicted and people abused by police or prison officials. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
