Lafnac is one of those shady electronic meccas that offer a window into the world of rogue cyberspace traders… Think William Gibson’s Neuromancer or Star Wars’ Han Solo. This is the place Han would shop at if he came through New York City and found himself on 42nd Street. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that they sell special wares like hyperdrive toolkit and antimatter shotguns in the back. The front’s packed with assorted electronic equipment: iPod accessories, computer hardware, cameras, camera chargers, USB Flash drives, geek porn at its finest. I ventured in here as I was searching for a charger for my Nokia N70, a European phone I picked up last year shopping online that has yet to make it across the pond. In other words, finding accessories for this phone is no small feat. Thankfully, Lafnac had the charger for me. Odd, though, was the fact that the packaging was already open. Still, they plugged it into my phone and it charged right up. Still, I found out later that you had to jiggle the plug for it to charge properly, so there must be a short somewhere and the bastards didn’t tell me. And they gouged me at $ 39.99 for the«Nokia Rapid Charger», as it is listed on my receipt. They do have a stamp that says«No Refund, Exchange Only within 7 days,» but I have a hunch that had I gone back to get an exchange, they’d have complained that I didn’t have the original packaging(which they threw away for me when I made the purchase!) I guess one must be very careful when dealing with rogue traders like Han Solo… So they in the world am I giving ‘em 4 stars? Well, 3 stars is what they deserve for the shadiness aspect of it all, but 5 stars since these guys carried something that I couldn’t find anywhere else here in Midtown… Cingular offered shitty service and didn’t sell the necessary adapter anyway. At least, Lafnac carried the charger I needed, albeit slightly worn and torn. No matter, it still works and I got my Nokia all jacked up. I’m back inside the matrix, thanks Lafnac!
