Klapowitz Julian, MD

I recently urged my 22 year old cousin (who had been experiencing persistent migraines for weeks for the first time in his life) to see Dr. Klapowitz. Having been a patient of Dr. Klapowitz for more than 12 years, I knew my cousin would be in good hands. My cousin was struck by not only Dr. Klapowitz’s professionalism but also by his apparent concern.
I first heard of Dr. Klapowitz from a friend of mine who survived ovarian cancer. When she asked the oncologist for a internal medicine doctor, the oncologists said he sent his own children to Julian Klapowitz. If you are one of those people who really just is seeking attention instead of medical care, he will not waist your time or his. This may be the reason for the 12/​19/​2013 negative review; I believe. If you are truly ill –whether it be a cold or cancer– Dr. Klapowitz will do his upmost for you and your loved ones.

I did not have a good experience. Previously, I had a pre-​diabetic A1C and as a new patient I mentioned to him that I wanted a new one. He brushed it off saying that prediabetes is overdiagnosed (if you read the medical literature, you’ll figure out that this is not an issue in about 5 minutes). When I told him that I bought a glucometer and had gotten a post-​prandial glucose level of 174, he was like ohhhh, ok. Luckily, I am proactive about my health, but if I had just listened to him straight away, I could have ended up with major trouble. I wish I could say he was the only doctor who felt this way, but it seems to be a more systemic problem. He’s a nice guy, and if there’s nothing wrong with you he might be good.

Dr. Klapowitz has been my doctor for about ten years. I have always been impressed by how seriously he takes making a diagnosis before deciding on a treatment. Once he has decided upon a treatment, he is always ready to identify the positives and negatives for the treatment when it is not obvious to me. After a visit with Dr. Klapowitz, I always come away feeling I have received medical care that is first-​rate. In regard to his staff, they are a hard working, happy group of people. They make me feel comfortable and are always ready if I need their help. And, the waiting area is quiet and relaxing, which I like.

I have been seeing doctor Klapowitz for over 4 years, and I would definitely recommend him to everyone.
Very professional, he provides great recommendations.
He took me recently without any appointment for a small emergency.

I went to Dr. K for years and loved him. Even though he was consistently brusque and often cut me off mid-​sentence, I trusted him and thought there was nothing he couldn’t fix. Then I got my «mystery illness» — strange symptoms that appeared after I’d been traveling to the Middle East and had a very nasty virus. The symptoms would not go away. He grudgingly sent me to specialists, none of whom found anything significant. I finally took myself to an infectious disease specialist, who ran more tests and said he could tell I’d had a very bad virus, but that it was too late now to figure out what it was. He diagnosed me with chronic fatigue syndrome (which I did not think I had, based on the symptoms, but there was some similarity). I went back to Dr. K and told him what the ID doc said — before I even got «chronic f…» out, he was rolling his eyes, saying (very loudly), «Oh, no, not THAT crap!» and when on and on about what a load of bull it was.
He’d also suggested at one point that I was «one of those high-​strung women,» and that I was too stressed (well, DUH! I felt like crap and no one could help me!), and that my illness was psychiatric. I didn’t balk even at this — I didn’t care WHAT I had, as long as I knew what it was. So I went to a therapist. After a very long talk, he said he was convinced that whatever was going on with my health was NOT psychiatric in nature.
So — that last day, the day of talking about CFS, I said to Dr. Klapowitz, «well, what’s wrong with me, then? What do I do?» And he said, «I don’t know what to tell you anymore.» Previously, at the end of each visit, he’d say, «Okay — meet me in my office.» This time he just walked out without saying anything and shut the door hard behind him.
Needless to say, I was crushed. The «mystery illness» lasted almost five years before I got close to normal (I’ve never felt 100% again). But for a trusted dr to blame an illness on being female, and to basically fire a patient because he was frustrated with her, is the height of hubris, unprofessionalism, and the very opposite of what a good doctor should do. Dr. Klapowitz, I hope you read this and know how badly you hurt patients when you treat them like this.

Dr. Klapowitz is an amazing doctor. He has a great bedside manner. His office staff is courteous. Needless to say, his office manager is very professional.

Rude and rushed. Last visit I was in mid-​sentence with a question and he was already out the door. I find him to be a very average doctor, which, combined with the bad bedside manner does not feel like good care.

Dr K is great. He gets to know you, and treats you like a person. He’s also light on the prescription pad, which is great. A lot of docs just throw pills at you to see what works. Dr K tries to figure out what’s wrong with a minimum of drugs. I recommend him highly.

I agree with the review above. I have had a number of primary care physicians in New York and Klapowitz is by far the best and most thorough. I stopped seeing him because he would not accept Blue Cross/​Blue Shield insurance and my company switched to that. I’m sorry I left his practice however since the two primary care doctors I have had since don’t hold a candle to Klapowitz. I’m going back to him despite the fact that he won’t take my insurance.

Dr. Klapowitz gives outstanding care. I have been seeing him since 1998. He and his staff are very thorough and caring even after hours.
