I used to go to Jinnie but she left; now I go to Phil. Both are awesome. Phil gives me the trendiest haircuts and I leave happy every time. Clean hair salon with great service too. I’ve been going for over 5 years!

This place used to be amazing before it became a chain store. This salon(and the one in queens) was my go-to for a haircut. I noticed how they slowly started raising their prices and asked them about it a while back and they told me it was cause of the rent… I understand that the amount they charge for just a haircut is due to the crazy rent in NYC, but please don’t give a 10 – 15 mins haircut and charge $ 50+… People, there are so many small salons around the K-town vicinity. Please save your time and just go there.

$ 62 for a trim. I cut ½ inch of my hair and my bangs. Absolute rip off. 10 min hair wash, 10 min hair cut =$ 62 + tip? Absolute blasphemy. Per hair salon, there is no difference between a haircut and trim price.

我的噩梦洗剪吹 韩国城乡结合部沙龙 My nightmare hair blow. Never thought a simply wish and blow hair service would cost me 40 bucks, and end up in a sick hair blow style. Worst hair service ever.

I paid for a lot. But the service is poor. The Chinese clerk service attitude is very bad. They made a mistake with my hair. And when I asked him what’s wrong with my hair many times use He didn’t say anything! How bad a man!!I never been here again!!!

I go here every 3 weeks for a haircut — my go to guy is Jun who is one of the senior stylists. Cuts are ~$ 35 – 40 for guys and I think it depends on who you get your haircut from. This is pretty much in line with all the other spots in ktown. I’ve been going here for several years now and the place has gone through some renovations which is turning out nicely. But more than how the place looks, I’m always happy with my haircut and they’re more than happy to adjust any haircut issues you have. Jun knows exactly how I like my haircut, and pretty much I show up and sit down, and I walk out a happy customer. They also have a loyalty program of sorts, so if you spend a lot or get a haircut often, its awesome for the long run. Highly recommend! I’ve sent several friends to Jun, who are all now loyal followers of KSY.

Blow-dry. Very professional. It is always a pleasure to get my hair washed ending with a little head massage. The employees are really nice. It is amazing it takes half the time to get a great blow-dry because 2 employees are working on it at the same time. The result is always perfect. If you look for a hair cut Mi Sun Won is The expert. She is really professional and nice. Highly recommended. Always satisfied. Highlights. I need to update my review to say how much SATiSFIED I am about the service. I returned to do for the first time some highlights. I LOVED it! Mi Sun is a real professional. She listened carefully to what I wanted and what I showed her. She took the time needed to get to the result I wanted. I have been disappointed in the past with the work of other hairdressers but never with Mi Sun!

I remember going to Kim Sun Young in LA growing up, so I’ve been wanting to check out their NY location! I had Grace layer my hair and trim my bangs. I thought she did a great job-she was telling me what would work well with my hair. I was a bit hesitant since I still wanted my hair to be long, but then I just went ‘eh, do what you think is best, it’s all good. And it turned out well, so yay! I also came right when they opened at 10am, and there was only one girl customer there. It took a little less than an hour for everything to be finished. I also kinda liked how they help each other out-I had two people blowdrying my hair, for instance. It’s all about being efficient with your workers and time!

I moved here from California and immediately needed a Korean haircut place to replace the one I had back in California(where there are literally five every block…). After digging around I decided to give this place a try, since I would be in the area getting food/drinks anyways(super convenient location! +1) The first two times I came here I didn’t really have any particular stylist cutting my hair so I just went with whoever was around. Then I met Jinnie, who is now my permanent stylist — she has great attention to detail when cutting my hair and is very professional and friendly, so that it’s a relaxing half-hour away from work emails. The experience itself is great. You walk in, they take your coat, and sit you down with some hot water or tea while you wait for someone to come wash your hair. After that, they get down to cutting your hair, after which you get a nice scalp massage before they put on the finishing touches. Typical experience, but I think they really try to put in more effort into the details so that you enjoy it a lot more and are more satisfied with your haircut. Note — tips are cash-only!

*** New Management *** I have been a loyal customer at Kim Sun Young hair salon for 5+ years. I have recommended numerous people here but I am sorry to say I will NEVER come back here again. I booked Kim Sun Young hair salon 6 months before my wedding date(signed the contract, explained what I wanted, checked out their newly remodeled wedding studio) The hair/makeup girl quit one month before my wedding date. The management dared to tell me that they had to charge me extra for each bridesmaid because they felt that the hair/makeup girl mispriced my contract!!! I argued this and then they decided to leave it as is. A week before my wedding they tell me that the wedding studio cannot be used on my wedding day and that the wedding party would need to get ready at the main salon on the 2nd floor! WTF!!! How dare they change all this last minute and not tell me in advance! Again, I argued this and of course they were lying!!! the wedding studio was accessible… I am sorry… this is way too much drama for a bride to handle. ** The hair/makeup freelancer they found was amazing!!!(i plan to scout her to another hair salon) ** Peter is no longer at Kim Sun Young because the management there sucks!!! They are shady shady!!! ** Everyone go to hair Osh or Kakaboka Thank you!

Sorry i have to give you a bad review. I used to be a loyal costume in this salon 4years ago until I switched to OSH. This time, I asked for a sharp and layered Bob style. He basically started with flatten down all my hair to the back of my neck, and then made a straight cut. Shaved out everything under this line. Trim the line to be more straight. Blow dry. So I told him I am not satisfied with his cut, and asked him to make layers to help define the volume. But he really did not do much other some cuts at sides. After I got back home, I found the back side is completely flat. Now my hair looks really dumb. I am very disappointed. He impressed me 4 years ago. I wish he could do better. I think OSH did so much better, and they charge less. Also, did I mention the hair wash? The assistance gave me a head massage on my wet hair, with no shampoo or conditioner. All the strength pulled my hair… that hurts! Stop doing that! Updates: After days, I am still upset about this disgusting haircut. I have thick hair, and this haircut made no layering to define the volume. It was so flat, and so short that makes it even harder to have someone else to fix it. He shaved up about 1 inch above my hairline, and have the shaved short hair to be complete exposed. How rude! It breaks my heart every time I look into the mirror. So ugly.

$ 15 bang cut that I literally could have done a better job of… And I just asked for simple straight bangs. All my friends and family after seeing my hair said«I like the idea… But why didn’t you get it done at a salon?» Everyone thought I had cut it myself at home. Trust me, go somewhere else or make sure to reserve it with the head stylist if you decide to come here. I know I won’t be returning here again.

I got a haircut and color done at Kim Sun Young and am very unhappy with my experience/service there, so I couldn’t help myself to share my experience with other Unilocalers with my first review. I went to Kim Sun Young to get a Balayage/Ombré 2 weeks ago, And Alex worked on my hair. After he was done, It looked like my hair was stuck in 90s thanks to the bad highlights he gave me. It didn’t blend naturally with my hair overall, and the results were very tacky and seemed like they were unaware of modern hair coloring techniques like other salons are(I’ve gotten the same style done before elsewhere). I brought a photo of the hair style and color, but the results were way off the mark. In addition to the styling and color, I also asked for a haircut, but the stylist ignored my request and just gave me a trim. I was disappointed in the results, especially since I paid $ 320, but felt I could eventually adjust. Less than a week later, I decided to call the salon because I was very unhappy with the hair, and they told me to come in again. I made sure to use a different stylist, and was appointed to Mi Sun. After she finished, my hair was a slight improvement, but it still was not close to what I had originally asked for(I showed Mi Sun the same photo I showed Alex). One of my key requests was to color my hair light, almost blonde, but she actually made my hair darker than the first attempt. I was charged another $ 100 for the second time, meaning I paid $ 420 in total for a hairstyle that I didn’t want, and what I had asked for, most salons can achieve without any problems. I do not recommend this salon to anyone. Kim Sun Young may have the popular name, but the abilities of those who are employed there aren’t anywhere near what you’d expect from the reputation and price. Summary: paid $ 420 for a hair style I didn’t want, and it took them two attempts. Kim Sun Young’s service isn’t anywhere close to its reputation. Also, my hair is extremely damaged!

Oops she did it again. .. yes, I got my hair done last weekend somewhere else but wasn’t completely satisfied so I decided to give Kim Sun Young a shot. The other reviewers are right. This makes my third trip over the many years. The first time they rocked my digital perm but that had been on virgin hair(subsequent digital perms became frizzy messes). Then my stylist went to another salon and I ended up following him. But once subsequently I came here on the sly and this place did such a poor job I ended up going back to get my hair redone by my stylist. But after reading about the revamping and recent change in management here(and the opening up of a third floor, no less), I was back. Some familiar old faces, but some new ones too. The place was hopping which I was glad to see as well. Kim Sun Young is a brand and a well-known one. In that way they have an edge on the other small Asian boutique salons that have popped up around the city. Thing about other non-Asian salons is they do a good job. But Korean salons take it up a notch. You can get pretty much anything you want under the sun done here. LIke the receptionist mentioned he was thinking of baby blue hair for himself. No one bats an eye here at really artistic hair. The stylists here rock wild hair themselves(saw one with a yellow-tipped mohawk). I also saw this interesting treatment on the wall about some organic volumizing hair treatment that makes your hair three times bigger. LIke I came in and requested a modern balayage ombré with no chunkiness and a seamless gradation in color and came in replete with four pics(two celebrities/models, two normal people who had good results who had posted on the web). Everyone is super-hospitable asking you if you want drinks or magazines constantly. The lady who did my hair was a real expert at what she was doing and one of the more senior stylists. She understood precisely what I want, what I didn’t want and she got to work. The final result was the best color job I’ve ever gotten. Not only do they strategically bleach and color your hair so that it comes out magazine-ready, but they also use a blue and/or green toner treatment afterwards to cut down on any potential brassiness and orangeness which often plagues Asian hair that has been colored and the net result is a perfect light cool color. Afterwards, they blow out your hair and give you curls to enhance the effect so you almost have to go out for a night on the town. The final result was as good, if not better, than the pics I had brought in as samples. After my hair coloring here today, I’d give this place six stars if I could. Very happy to see the turn-around here for the better.

I’m at Kim Sun Young at least once a month and I’m glad to announce that their third floor renovations are complete. Well, kinda. They have a few loose ends to tie up, but give it a few more weeks and their third floor will looks as posh and glam as ever. (Before the third floor renovations, Kim Sun Young only occupied the second floor of the building. But due to a growing list of clientele, they bought out the third floor and completely revamped their layout and space.) They’ve always had extraordinary hair stylists and a small makeup corner, but now they have that and so much more! Now they have eyelash extension technicians, a photo studio, a massage room, and a self-serve café with lots of seating for those wonderfully chivalrous gentlemen who are waiting for their women folk to finish up with their hair. One little downside though, the third floor does not have a receptionist, so you’d have to stop on the second floor to check in with Sammy, the receptionist, who will then escort you to your stylist, whether it’s on the second or third floor. Then, after you’re done, you’ll have to climb down a flight of stairs back to the receptionist table on the second floor to pay, then right back up to the third floor to tip your stylist. It’s a bit of a hassle. Other than that, I’ve gotta hand it to them. They’re flourishing in the one block strip recognized as Manhattan’s Korea Town with many many competitors just a few doors down. They’re the biggest salon in the area. Kudos!

Like lots of people have said already, this is a very Korean heavy place. I walked in and was greeted in Korean first, though they switched over when they realized that my Korean was pretty bad. The facility really looks state of the art, as though celebrities would come in to get a hair cut. I was quickly led to the closet and switched out my jacket for a gown and they told me that I would have to wait a little for my appointment. I had come right on time, but whatever, I wasn’t in a rush or anything. Then they hounded me several times asking if I wanted anything to drink, which was really nice but overwhelming too and after I said no the third time, I gave in got a bottle of water from them. Sometimes, too nice is too much haha. Then things got a bit awkward. They sat me down in a seat and after two minutes, three people came up to be awkwardly and said that I was in another gentleman’s seat, so they moved me out to another seat. Two minutes after that, another group of people came and told me I was in their seat, so I had to move to the bench. Honestly, just take your time. I don’t mind waiting at the counter. But don’t seat your customers and then MOVE them out of the seat immediately afterward! There didn’t seem to be any communication about what all of the staff was doing. After about 20 minutes of waiting past my appointment time, I was finally called over for my cut. I made an appointment with Peter Gwon, who seemed pretty chill and relaxed. He definitely has the whole Korean-hair-stylist vibe going, so I was pretty comfortable with trusting my hair to him(the last Chinese place I went to in Astoria was TERRIBLE). I don’t like talking during my hair cuts, so I just closed my eyes and took a semi-nap. I asked for a faux-hawk cut with the sides and back pretty much shaved. He did an excellent job and the hair looks great! It’s a bit pricey for a men’s cut, $ 42 if you use a credit card plus the $ 7 tip(tips are CASHONLY) I gave to him personally(make sure you always tip your barbers! They have a lot of power in their hands and they WILL remember you). I’ll be back the next time I need a cut, but I will remember to leave extra time for the wait.
