Katz’s Delicatessen

Finalmente y caminando random llegamos a Katz y fue imposible no entrar!
Entrás y te dan un ticket que tenés que mostrar para salir. NO LO PIERDAS! en el papelito el cortador (de tu Sandwich) va a anotar el costo de tu pedido. Hay varias «bocas» de corte y las filas son difusas. La bebida y los «sides» como papas y ensaladas se piden en otro mostrador. Todo esto fue captado a base de leer los carteles y mirar; ya que entrás y es un poco confuso el método para que te atiendan.
Si preferís no hacer cola hay mesas con mozos que te sirven.
Pero volvamos al método que elige la mayoría: te parás detrás de un cortador y cuando te toca pedís mientras el cortador te deja probar lo que vas a comer por si cambiás de opinión. El pastrami (casi 20 usd) es realmente MUY BUENO. (Aunque no desesperemos que en Buenos Aires tiene competencia!).
El cortador que me tocó era latino (como casi todos) y hablamos un rato. La cerveza especial que hace Brooklyn Brewery para Katz es muy buena pero cara (9 Usd).
Las porciones son grandes como para compartir.
Si cambiás los carteles tranquilamente podría ser un bodegón/​pizzería de Buenos Aires.
Rico pero salado para nuestro bolsillo. Vas y te sacás el gusto. Sólo efectivo.

J’ai voulu tester leur fameux sandwich de viande de boeuf. J’ai aimé sont côté tendre et légèrement rôti avec de grosses et bonne frites maison. Les moins: le temps d’attente dû à la foule. Mais comme tout ce qui marche, cela à un prix. Une bonne note dans l’ensemble. A recommander.

Bön vu l’énorme vague d’avis présent sur ce lieu, je doute être remarquée mais il fallait quand même que je ke dise: j’ai été plutôt déçue par Katz. J’ai comme l’impression que c’est le genre de lieu qui surf sur une vague infinie créée par le fameux «Harry rencontre Sally» + absolument tous les guides qui le mettent en bon plan. Or, sorry to say that, mais ce n’est pas un bon plan du tout !
A 4 nous nous sommes retrouvés avec une addition de 100 €. La fameuse spécialité au pastrami m’a personnellement plutôt écoeuré (question de goût), le service (devant gérer énormémeeeeeeent de monde) est sympathique sans grand plus. Ils sont surtout très efficaces.
Et vu la foule je conseille vivement d’opter pour l’option où vous donner votre nom à l’accueil et on vous place dès que possible.
Bref ce restau est peut-​être dans la bucket-​list de tout touriste, mais moi je né le conseille pas spécialement.
Surtout si vous n’avez pas beaucoup de temps dans la grosse pomme

It’s been about 5 days since I’ve had my Katz’s fix. I’ve been waking up every night tossing and turning from the same beautiful dream and muttering the exchange: «corn beef, pastrami, corn beef, pastrami.» The meat is addicting and I’m already studying Katz’s website trying to determine if I need the meat shipped to Miami.
Think going to a restaurant in NYC at 4:00 pm on a Sunday means it will be empty? Wrong! Wifey and I arrived to an absolutely packed restaurant. I guess it’s always time for a stacked sandwich, right? The lines were not going to prevent me from getting my fix.
I waited on line with cutter 3 and depending on how much food the person in front of you orders, it will take about 5 minutes per person. When it was finally my turn I spit my order out so fast in pure excitement. Like a drug dealer, the cutter will provide you a «taste» consisting of a few slices of meat while hand-​slicing your meat selection for your sandwich. I ordered the two-​meat combo and had it stuffed with corn beef and pastrami on rye. Coupled with french fries the order was enough for 2 meals. I usually rush through my meals but this sandwich had to be savored. The meat is cured to perfection and not too fatty. Put a little bit of Katz’s mustard on it and it’s truly perfection!
There’s a reason why Katz’s has been famous for so long, and unlike other places, the fame hasn’t gotten the best of them as they are still doing food the right way. Despite the long lines and the heavy price, that sandwich will ALWAYS be worth it! Can’t wait to come back to NYC to get my fix.

If you’ve never tried katz you have to at least try it once in your life. It’s delicious! The pastrami sandwich is super flavorful, juicy and tender. The prices are a bit extreme for a sandwich but the portions are huge so its worth it.

I cannot believe I have not written a review for this Lower East Side Delicatessen Legend! The pastrami on rye with lots of mustard, a half sour pickle, with some slaw, potato salad, and a cherry soda was a legend way before Meg Ryan brought it to the world’s consciousness. All Madden? You better believe it. I hope this place never changes! The french fries, and matzoh ball soup are also first rate.

Katz’s is a New York institution. It’s pastrami on rye is the stuff that dreams are made of. Is it more expensive than your standard sandwich? Yes, but the quality is top-​notch. The high volume of both tourists and locals means that the pastrami is always steaming hot.
Getting a sample while the gentlemen behind the counters prep your sandwich just makes you hungrier for what is to come afterwards. Just don’t forget to bring cash and hold onto your ticket!

Best sandwich of my life. Yes, it is pricey ($ 22 for a sandwich). Yes, it is cash only. Yes, it was so delicious I want to go back for more already…
We walked in on a week day around 5 pm and there was barely any wait. They give you a ticket (1 per person) when you walk in and they put your order on those tickets (so don’t lose the tickets!). We ordered half pastrami and half corned beef sandwich with pickles on the side. You have to order everything in different lines (one for soup, one for sandwiches, etc.). It was super juicy and oh so good. Super simple but seriously the best ever. After you are done you give them your ticket on the way out the door and pay there.
Definitely a great spot and a great sandwich!

So I finally got to Katz’s thanks to my German friend who was staying in NYC during the arctic chill of February 2016. A warning: Like so many other famous restaurants and classic places to go in NYC this is definitely a tourist trap. Everything from steep priced food, overcrowded and tight seating arrangements, Katz’s paraphernalia and somewhat lower than average service. They have a system — at least on the weekends — where those people who wish to be seated are given a ticket and told to hold onto it until you pay on the way out. The phrase, «Do not lose your ticket» is shouted numerous times to ensure the message is set in your mind. Not entirely sure why or what would happen if you were to lose the ticket…
For a weekend, the expected wait time of 20 – 30 mins seemed fine especially when we didn’t wait longer than 10 mins. Sat at the last table in the back corner, really snug fit. We decided to get two different things and share: classic pastrami and grandma’s roast beef on rye bread. Kudos for free pickles and house mustard on the side. The sandwiches were big, juicy and delicious meat. Our waiter was an older gentleman with chivalrous demeanor and a sense of humor which was nice but it was hard to track him down to ask a question and when closing our tap. Another weird attribute of this place was the oats on the bathroom floor? Not sure if that’s a Jewish thing or what but it was odd and a bit unnecessary.
On this particular day, their credit card machine had broken down and we were forced to pay in cash. For those would didn’t have enough, there was an ATM in the restaurant but with parties bigger than two people I just can’t imagine the craziness. Unfortunately for our waiter, even though he gave adequate service we only had enough cash to pay for the bill and leave a low tip. Although this is a NYC tourist staple where the walls are covered with photos of all your favorite celebs and public figures, its just not worth the trouble. Perhaps later in the evening and if you’re in the neighborhood craving a meaty sandwich, knish or matzo ball soup but I think I’ll pass. Plenty of other delis in the city to try.

Pastrami exceptionnel. On prend un ticket à l entrée (surtout né pas le perdre). On se dirige vers un des comptoirs pour commander je recommande pastrami on rye with mustard + un soda Cel-​Ray. $ 20 le sandwich mais cela les vaut bien tellement c est bon et bien chargé. Mais pas d inquiétude si vous né finissez on vous l emballe pour l emporter.

You know how you look at a menu & the food looks fantastic but then you get your order & it looked nothing like the photo? Well that didn’t happen at Katz’s Delicatessen! Better yet, the Pastrami tastes better than I could have ever expected. Mouthwatering, tender, juicy, orgasmic (not the fake kind from the movie), flavorful, etc… The mustard melds perfectly with the meats and the aroma just leaves your mouth watering. I could go on & on!
Our last day in NYC, I was SO glad our flight was delayed as our schedule had not allowed for our planned stop to Katz’s. We caught a cab and went around 9am. (It is never too early for good pastrami).
Morning is a great time to go if you want to bat the weekday crowds. You walk in and you can inhale the most wonderful odors of corned beef & brisket. We get our tickets and go to the counter. Our meat cutter was so nice and he assisted us in choosing our food. We decided to share by getting a Pastrami and a Reuben but I also had to get an order of tongue to go because you just can’t get it this good at home. I am so glad I did because we sat for hours at the airport and we were so glad to have that to knosh on before we finally decided to go through security.
I have not even been home a full month and I have been craving that pastrami ever since we landed back in FL. I don’t know if they cure the meat with «crack» but I’ll take it! It is an expensive habit so I cannot do it often but I ordered Pastrami from them and it came today.
Pastrami fix at our home tonight! I got the meat & the mustard and the hubby can’t wait for me to bring it home! Thanks Katz’s for ending our NYC visit on a high note!

Pour tous les fans de «Quand Harry rencontre Sally» il faut impérativement aller manger un sandwich chez Katz. Pas donné (environ 15 $ hors taxe) mais c’est une institution! (et on vous emballe le reste du sandwich car personne n’arrive à finir et il né faudrait pas gâcher un si bon pastrami)
Pour les végétariens, la matzo ball soup est un must et né coûte que 7 $ hors taxe.

Das Fleisch meines pastrami Sandwiches war extrem zäh. Konnte es kaum kauen. Zudem hat es einen dicken fettrand. Viele stört das Vlt nicht, aber ich bin da sehr wählerisch.

Thick cut juicy salty pastrami on their soft club bread — like a white sub/​hero bread — instead of their option of rye, plus mustard + mayo and white cheese with lettuce/​tomato makes for a one-​of-​a-​kind NYC meal.
Easy to share but doubt you’ll want to!
The staff is very «New York» — take that however you want –and the atmosphere is laid back, very casual. Cool photos everywhere and large space. A Mix of locals and full of tourists equates to extended long lines — even still, there is only one Katz and you gotta try it at least once!
You won’t regret it.

Katz’s Deli — What can I say that hasn’t been said already? It’s not just a lunch, dinner, or sandwich; it’s an experience from start to finish! From standing in the block long line and the building anticipation as you inch closer. Peering in through the windows to see the action and checking out all the awards posted. Finally getting in the door, taking a whiff of that amazing meat aroma, and being awarded your orange ticket only to again wait in line at your carver station. Getting the meat teaser from your carver just to keep you from jumping over the counter and digging in! To the moment when you finally sit down with that glorious mountain of a sandwich and take that first delicious bite! Even to the line to exit when you get to punch out your orange ticket.
So I ordered the classic pastrami on rye with cheese and mustard. Just ridiculously delicious. The pastrami is so tender and flavorful and the grease is glistening. The mustard is an absolute must along with the swiss. Overall an amazing sandwich and a very unique experience.
The only downfall is Katz’s pricing. To me, $ 20 for a pastrami sandwich is a bit much but as a businessman, if you can get it why not? They clearly aren’t hurting for business and the pricing isn’t turning customers away. I guess we can just chalk up the pricing as «part of the experience.» Katz’s is truly a must when in NYC especially to any hearty meat sandwich lover!

Highly recommend stoping by even tho there’s a line up outside it goes fast, crazy how many people they can fit in there. Word to the wise pick up a take out menu this way you won’t be lost when you get up to the first counter lol. The seating is mostly sharing with others unless you want to wait for a spot on the other side of the resto, but it’s super packed. You get tickets that you can’t lose or you can’t leave the restaurant because your order is marked on it.

While I really enjoyed my pastrami sandwich, this place is very touristy and you get hustled along like cattle. I really wish they had another branch somewhere that us locals can go. It’s cash only and make sure you keep that receipt! Oh, did I mention they have bouncers at the door? Yes, bouncers.
Great to go if you’ve never been, but definitely not a frequent hang out.

Believe the Hype! This place blew me away my expectations!
My friend and I came right around lunch time which is usually a bad idea. There was already a huge line outside the restaurant going around the block. Luckily, it only took about 10 – 15 minutes to get in. Once the security guard let’s you in, you will be given a ticket which needs to be stamped for every food item you get. The lines inside are pretty long and most of the tables were taken. However, the staff works pretty fast when getting your order so everything moves pretty smoothly. One other thing, don’t lose the ticket or you gotta pay $ 50!
My friend and I ordered the Pastrami on Rye. They pack the sandwiches with loads of pastrami you can barely take a bite. The sandwich was pretty flavorful and meaty. After finishing my meal, I can say it’s one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten that was pretty satisfying and kept me full for the rest of the day. We also ordered the cheesecake which wasn’t overly sweet and was pretty thick. It wasn’t as good as the sandwich but still pretty delicious. Also, this place is cash only. I spent about $ 28 on my sandwich and cheesecake but it was worth it.
A must try if you’re around New York! This is also a great tourist spot since they filmed a famous scene from the movie «When Harry Met Sally» (If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know what scene I’m talking about). Come here! You won’t be disappointed.

Great experience. I didn’t mind the 40 minute wait in line to get to a ‘cutter’. To be that busy at 3pm means they’re doing something right. I fully intended on ordering the standard corned beef sandwich, but the cutter suggested trying the pastrami vs corned beef.
He handed me a slice of the corned beef. Yum, delicious, just as I expected. Then he pulled out a fresh pastrami brisket and sliced a piece for me to sample. Now, this wasn’t a fair competition as the pastrami was still steaming hot. Doesn’t matter. It knocked my socks off. The pastrami felt like it had just melted into my tongue. Incredible! I told him to just make me whatever he recommended.
He went with a pastrami reuben, and I devoured it. Well, half of it because it’s so big, but then the other half was put to good use at 3am to prevent a Sunday hangover. Without a doubt the best pastrami I’ve ever had. It’s worth the wait, and the cost ($ 22+ for my sandwich). Just go.

We went there very late in the evening so there was not too much left to eat. So we went for Frankfurter. It is funny how they call it Frankfurter when it isnt one ;-) well at least not in Germany.
The hot dog was pretty average anyways. In addition, it was totally obverpriced — I mean 7 $ for fries is a bit too much in my opinion.
Basically what they have there is this cool atmosphere but that is it. Maybe I will come next time earlier to make sure I had the right impresssion.

I’m going to refrain from comparing this to my beloved Langer’s because the food isn’t really the problem (although it’s not the greatest).
Firstly, this whole ticketing system is bullshit. Every other NY eatery does JUST FINE with dine and dashing. Getting a ticket (per person) upon entering is just really dumb. Why? Because if you lose said ticket you are required to pay $ 50. THIS IS A DELI. Are 7 foot tall «deli bouncers», there to presumably enforce the ~house rules~, really necessary?
We ask for a table with service. They say there’s none available. We go to the counter, and spout off our order. Apparently, you have to order your sandwich in one line, latkes in another line, soup IN ANOTHER LINE, and THEN ALCOHOL IN ANOTHER GOD FORSAKEN LINE. When we realized this is what we had to do (especially with paying $ 20 for a SANDWICH), we demanded a table with some hutzpah, and suddenly one is available. THIS IS A DELI, NOT A CLUB, MIND YOU.
The food was 100% just okay. I’m truly not saying this because of the bad taste already in my mouth. I’ve had better all around, and the matzoh ball soup was room temperature. The Service was not great; we had to wave her down for every encounter.
Then we go to pay. I looked up on Unilocal whether it’s cash only or accepts card. Accepts cards says Unilocal!So I pull out card, with the bill and ~our tickets~ to a girl who says Katz’s is cash only. She points to a shady ATM behind me and I burst into flames. Just kidding, but the girl could see the brimming rage, and suddenly (like that table magic we experienced earlier!) they’re able to take cards in the back of the restaurant! Oh, Katz, the conveniences you bestow! No but really, please just get a little more shady. It’s just another example of a restaurant riding on the laurels of a previous reputation, and your patronage is *somehow* a privilege.
We go to the back to pay. We leave the restaurant. And I run into traffic banshee screaming.
This is my sad story about Katz’s Delicatessen.

— Not your run-​of-​the-​mill pastrami. Thick-​cut and not too salty.

Maybe I’m less of a deli person so I wasn’t wowed enough to give this place five stars, but I definitely still made the trip to try this famous institution. Of course, I ordered the pastrami. I wanted soup too and ordered the matzo ball soup. When moving to order my sandwich, I realized that there was a ½ soup + ½ sandwich option on the menu. The meat cutter was able to accommodate my last-​minute combo order, but kindly explained that if I want a combo meal, to just order that to begin with at the sandwich counter from the get-​go. The cutter was overall very friendly (not to mention attractive), and I also enjoyed the sample of meats while I was waiting for my order to be made. Sandwiches come with a side plate of pickles and cucumbers too; I preferred the cucumbers but ate the whole plate.
The restaurant is really large and spacious with plenty of seats, but it still gets crowded when busy. The walls are super decorated with newspaper/​article clippings as well as numerous photos of famous patrons. They also have a very unique system where you get a ticket upon entering, order you food and get your ticket marked, then pay at the very end at the cashier right before exiting the restaurant.
Table service is available as well, and a whole row of tables to one side of the restaurant are set aside for this purpose. Self-​serve water is available at a fountain near the back, and you can order desserts at a separate counter as well. You can also ship smoked meats to anywhere in the country!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and can see why this place is so famous/​popular! Highly recommend!

¡No puedo creer que no haya comentado este local! Fue una de las visitas que tenía apuntadas como imprescindibles en mi visita a Nueva York de hace un par de años. Y es que, tras ver este restaurante en el programa «Crónicas Carnivoras» (Man vs. Food), lo dejé apuntado en mi lista de «locales que visitar cuando vaya a Nueva York». Ya sabéis, esa lista que nunca esperas usar hasta que, de repente, te ves a ti mismo comprando un billete de avión obscenamente barato y mirando Airbnb para dormir barato junto al Empire State.
Y así fue que visite la gran manzana, y dentro de la gran manzana, este local anclado en los 70, con mobiliario anticuado, ritmo frenético y precios que escandalizarían a Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.
Pastrami. No sabía qué era antes de visitar el Katz Deli. Y ahora tampoco. Es un trozo de animal muerto, eso está claro, y está bueno. Pero cobrar casi 20 $ por un sanwich de este tipo de carne, acompañado de pepinillos me parece un poco salvaje. Eso sí, de uno comen dos con no mucha hambre. Para suavizar el tema, tienen las paredes llenas de famosos que les han visitado, en plan, eh, el presidente Clinton comió aquí, es por eso que nuestros precios son de recepción presidencial. En fin, que estando de vacaciones tan lejos ni te lo piensas.
El sandwich en sí es más basto que una pizza de paja. Pero, sin saber muy bien cómo, te gusta. Lo acompañan de una mostaza que está muy buena y la carne la cortan delante de tus narices, en un frenético akelarre de despedazamiento animal que te deja embobado y hace que te griten cuando atascas la cola de clientes. Porque, sí, señores, está hasta los topes de gente. Eso, unido a que los camareros tienen poca paciencia con los que balbuceamos un inglés del montón, hace de la experiencia de pedir tu comida algo duro.
Así pues, visitad Katz’s Deli si os gustan los sandwiches bastos pero sabrosos y que te miren con impaciencia cuando tienes que pensar cómo pedir comida en inglés.

What can I say? The NYC icon is worth every dollar of the $ 20 per sandwich. The atmosphere alone is just incredible. The Harry met Sally story is pretty awesome too.
We ordered our sandwich and received a taste. That was a nice touch. Do not lose your ticket you get when you walk in. Otherwise it will cost you a cool $ 50!
You’ll enjoy this place!

This place is legendary & historic. Not only has it been there for generations but it was the setting for «that scene» in ‘When Harry Met Sally’. Stayed 4 days in NY & visited 3 times… I think that sums it up! The sandwiches are huge so you might want to share. It’s way more fun if you order yourself so skip the table service & embrace the chaos!

I was saddened that this was not as good as it used to be.
After talking it up for months, I took one of my colleagues there. The corned beef on rye with mustard (the classic sandwich!) was bountiful but dry. Worst yet, we both got quite ill overnight.
Was very disappointed. Won’t return.

Alright let’s be real, $ 28 for a sandwich and pickles ! Okay fine, it’s huge — we get it. I ate half of it and I plan on eating the other half of it tomorrow. But no matter how good this thing is, I can’t bring myself to rationalize spending so much money on a sandwich. We are in NYC, I’m sure we can find deli sandwiches that taste just as delicious but won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Additionally, some of the staff aren’t all that friendly.
I would DEFINITELY not come back even though the sandwich was great. I also wouldn’t recommend it to someone who is visiting New York. We got some other amazing eats, this isn’t worth your time and especially your money !

Alright, so I’m a sucker for cured meats and I don’t mind shelling out a bit of cash for the best pastrami sandwich in NYC. Walk through the doors and you’re transported to a little piece of history… and it smells great!
They run a ticket system here, so do not lose your ticket once you get it! (There’s a fine if you do.) You have your classic Jewish deli options like the matzo ball soup, chicken noodle, Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda (which you should be getting to wash down your sandwich, otherwise it’s sacrilege), and of course your cured meats! I can vouch for the pastrami and/​or the corned beef. If you wish to have both at the same time, opt for the Reuben — corned beef, pastrami, sauerkraut, and downright delectable Russian dressing. However, if you are a purist and just want some damn good pastrami, then you’re in for a behemoth portion of pastrami on rye with mustard. Salty, briny, smoky, and meaty in all it’s perfection — it’s meat heaven I tell ya!
It’s a meat eaters wet dream, if you’ve seen When Harry Met Sally, I think you know what I mean!

Split the pastrami sandwich… it’s HUGE!
It’s cafeteria style here — grab a ticket at the front, pick a number at the counter, order and they stamp what you ordered.
Pastrami was super delicious. Tender and juicy on rye with a bit of mustard. I found the meat a bit too greasy, so I suffered for it later (thank you Tums!) but I would still come back again for more.
The matzo ball soup reminded me of what mom used to make at home. Would happily eat that every day.
Make sure you take your ticket to the counter on the way out to pay!

I’m glad I tried the infamous sandwich spot that inspired an orgasm in a script written about 30 some odd years ago. But I found Katz’s quite confusing and overrated. Upon walking in, it was overwhelming. You can choose table service or you can order at the counter. The lines at the counter were long and confusing. Plus I still consider myself a clueless tourist. So we chose table service. That was our first rookie mistake. Apparently you can still order at the counter and then seat yourself wherever there isn’t reserved seating.
We didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. They sat us at a table with two sweet older ladies. Our waitress seated us on the inside along the wall and seated the other two ladies on the outside along the aisle. It took a while for our waitress to come back and take our order.
First she gave us some pickles. I tried them all. I liked one of them, the others were far too sour for me.
Finally, we placed our order.
I ordered a corned beef sandwich. That might have been my second mistake. Maybe I should have gotten a reuben instead, but there are so many sandwiches and a lot of them have the same ingredients, so I figured what the heck?
Mr. Joy tried to order a brisket plate, but our waitress hurriedly put him down for a brisket sandwich instead and moved on to take the other people’s orders. She did not appear to have any regard for what we wanted or any patience to speak to us despite the fact that she wasn’t too quick to provide service herself.
Then, we had to wait for our food for a while. Finally, it was time to eat.
Corned Beef Sandwich — I was pleased to see the huge portions of meat, but a little disappointed that it was basically a mountain of meat in between 2 slices of sandwich bread. As a result, it was very dry and very salty. The quantity of meat could not make up for the taste. The flavor was pretty much one note = salt. I definitely needed water, but it was hard to get our waitress’ attention for a refill.
Brisket Sandwich — The brisket was also quite dry, and dare I say, had almost no flavor.
Most of the sandwiches here cost about $ 20 each. I strongly believe these prices are driven by demand and hype, and not based on the value of the ingredients. In my opinion, the quality and taste just wasn’t there. I’ve had better corned beef & brisket sandwiches elsewhere.
Maybe I would feel differently if I had gotten the reuben.
As if I wasn’t already confused enough, it was also confusing just exiting this place. I find the ticketing system strange, antiquated, annoying, and lame. Katz’s DOES accept card payment. Thank goodness, because I’m not too eager to hit up the ATM for a sandwich. But the register for card payment is actually towards the back of the restaurant. Once we asked how to pay with card, someone replied to us to go to the back, and a bunch of us in the ticket line headed in the opposite direction. That is rather inconvenient and a hassle to customers. You’re basically paying extra for table service with next to no service if you have to go with self check-​out. At least the card payment line was short.
Perhaps Katz’s was the spot back in the day, but the day I checked it out, sadly, it was not.

#1 — $ 22 for a Reuben pastrami sandwich…
It’s their pastrami sandwich loaded with sauerkraut, cheese, and dressing. They have about 6 cutters and thus, 6 lines. The lines were pretty short and quick at 5:30pm on a Sunday. The crowds of tourists and locals didn’t come in until a bit later. There were tons of free tables and we even got to sit where Harry and Sally sat! (There’s a sign dangling from the ceiling indicating where the actors sat for that famous O-​scene haha)
#2 — If I’m paying $ 22 for a sandwich, it better be good…
It was BETTER than good! We even got to sample the pastrami (and corned beef upon request) while waiting for our sandwich.
#3 — Better not be a tiny little sandwich…
It wasn’t. My friend and I shared the Reuben (comes with a side of pickles and cucumbers) and we each got our own Matzo Ball Soup. We were full for $ 20 per person (pay upon exit with the green ticket which we handed to our cutter for billing purposes). The matzo ball, which is unleavened Jewish bread, was a bit bland but the chicken soup was good with the right amount of salt.
#4 — Ok, I’m SOLD!
I can’t believe I’ve never been to Katz’s before this one-​time! Definitely coming back (with a food buddy)! They also bus and clean the tables for you. No need to get the side tables with waiter service.

There’s probably nothing that I can contribute that hasn’t already been said in the other 6000 reviews, but if you’re visiting NYC, Katz is a MUST.
The $ 20.00 pastrami sandwich lives up to the hype and THEN SOME. And although this sandwich is heaven-​sent and delicious enough to inhale whole, it is a lot of meat to finish in one sitting, at least for me. My husband on the other hand had no problems devouring the whole thing — so I guess it depends on your hunger level, aka pastrami capacity.
I crave their sandwich now that I’m back home in California. Yes, I am aware of Langer’s in LA, but something about the chaos, the smell, the pastrami, and the people, that make Katz that much better.
They don’t take card so come prepared with cash and a huge appetite.

Ordered: Corn beef sandwich and Potato pancake
Pros – The sandwich had great, thick slices of meat that had a perfect degree of saltiness. Best corn beef sandwich I’ve ever had to date.
Cons – The prices were pretty steep. The potato pancake was a little too heavy in flavor.

Si vous êtes à New-​York et né connaissez pas Katz’s, il serait inconcevable de pas y aller une fois pour le repas de midi. Katz’s existe depuis 1888, situé sur East Houston Street, est ce que l’on appelle un «delicatessen «qui normalement est une épicerie fine, un traiteur ou même un restaurant fortement influencé par la cuisine juive Ashkénaze d’Europe de l’est. Pour un déjeuner rapide et savoureux, rien de mieux que ce type d’établissement. Dans un «deli «on peut s’offrir des mets délicats et des spécialités gastronomiques comme de la viande fumée, de la charcuterie, différents types de pains, etc. L’art des «deli «est le plus souvent associé à la ville de New York, qui fût par le passé une terre d’accueil pour les immigrants juifs et italiens.
Le Katz’s Delicatessen que vous né pourrez manquer car tout d’abord l’enseigne lumineuse rouge même allumée la journée né peut être manquée et la file devant l’établissement et vraiment impressionnante. C’est donc l’un des restaurants les plus connus de New York qui se distingue par sa longévité (toujours populaire après 125 ans d’activité) et sa charcuterie, véritable marque de fabrique. On pourrait plutôt même qualifier cet endroit de cafeteria et vous allez vite comprendre pourquoi…
Monsieur Katz, immigrant juif d’origine russe, et sa famille, ouvrirent ce lieu qui est le symbole de l’histoire des immigrants du quartier de Lower East Side, il subsiste dans leur menu des marques d’un héritage juif (le saumon fumé est un des plats populaires), des photographies accrochées aux murs retracent leur passé. D’ailleurs ce restaurant est aussi célèbre que les nombreuses célébrités qui y ont dévoré un sandwich et qui ont parfois l’honneur de figurer en photo avec l’un des patrons sur l’un des murs. Faire un tour de salle est plutôt très intéressant pour essayer de reconnaitre certains de ces personnages. Tout politicien qui se respecte est passé par chez Katz sans compter toutes stars et starlettes d’ici et d’ailleurs.
D’ailleurs Katz’s est notamment célèbre pour la fameuse scèné cinématographique, qui se situe dans le restaurant, de l’orgasme simulé de Meg Ryan dans le film «When Harry Met Sally «. A une époque la table où ils étaient assis était indiquée, mais le signe a disparu. Vous remarquerez également un célèbre panneau avec le slogan de la seconde guerre mondiale «Send a salami to your boy in the Army», alors que des fils de la famille étaient engagés.
Manger chez Katz’s est un vrai spectacle. Une fois la fille terminée et passé la porte, franchi un portillon, vous passez devant un serveur qui vous donne avec autorité votre ticket sur lequel sera noté tout ce que vous commanderez.
A partir de là, deux possibilités. Soit vous trouvez une place dans la rangée de table adossée au mur recouvert de photos des innombrables célébrités ayant mangé chez Katz’s, et vous serez alors servis à table, soit vous devez faire la queue devant les différents comptoirs pour composer votre repas, ce qui prendra encore quelques dizaines de minutes. La salle est pleine, le bruit plutôt élevé mais c’est ce qui fait tout son charme.
Tout ici est bien structuré avec les mets affichés derrière la ribambelle de serveurs («cutter «ou découpeur) qui sont là pour vous préparer votre plateau en quelques minutes. Soyez donc sûr de savoir ce que vous voulez quand vous vous trouvez face à l’un d’entre eux.
La grande spécialité, ce sont les sandwichs au pastrami ou au roastbeef servis entre deux tranches de pain de seigle (rye), moutarde et accompagnés de gros cornichons au vinaigre ou salés. Le pastrami est une préparation à base de poitrine de bœuf plongée dans la saumure, fumée et épicée avec du poivre. C’est un plat typique pour les juifs d’Europe de l’Est et notamment de Roumanie. Vous pourrez observer ces «cutter «s’emparer d’une grosse pièce de viande et de la trancher devant vous encore fumante.
Si vous êtes sage, l’un des «cutter «vous donnera quelques lamelles de ce pastrami pour vous permettre d’attendre que votre sandwich soit prêt. Une fois le graal en main ou plutôt sur un plateau, il né vous reste plus qu’à passer au stand des frites ou de salades type cole-​slaw et à vous faire servir une bière bien fraîche.
Rejoignez votre table, saisissez votre sandwich au pastrami on rye à deux mains si vous le pouvez car celui-​ci est tellement épais que cela en devient un exploit. C’est vraiment délicieux, pas forcément léger mais en tout cas cela vaut d’être mangé au moins une fois dans sa vie. Un sandwich coûte environ 20 USD, mais leur qualité et leur taille justifient ce prix.
Le cole-​slow dégouline de mayonnaise, les frites sont croustillantes, on s’en met plein la panse…
Katz’s, c’est aujourd’hui plus de 13 000 hotdogs par semaine, 6000 livres de viande de bœuf et 2500 de salami.
Ce restaurant est bruyant, mais cela fait partie de son charme. De la bonne humeur, une ambiance familiale et détendue, un lieu avec plein d’histoire à New-​York à né surtout pas manquer.

*matzo ball soup (ok, I’m not from a Jewish family and did not grow up eating matzo ball soup so I don’t really have much reference about this soup. I honestly didn’t enjoy it. The texture of the matzo ball was strange. It was like dry yet moist in the soup. The soup itself was rather salty. Not a fan of it. Would recommend the chicken noodle instead)
I have been wanting to try Katz’s for a long time. Watched all these segments about it on Food Network and Travel Channel so I had high expectations. Upon walking in, we each received a ticket and then were given quick directions to order at the counter and then pick a seat. I was so confused about what was happening. I sat while the BF ordered. Naturally, I’m staring and people watching while waiting for our food. Super casual place, service is quick and efficient. Most employees are friendly. Food was decent. I would return to eat just the meat and try the potato salad.

Okay, it was a damn good pastrami. Packed with meat. Bit of mustard spread. I haven’t much experience with pastrami, but I feel like I can’t ever have it anymore because it was just so good here. Tender, juicy, as meat should be.
HOWEVER, $ 20 for a sandwich? I did it for the first-​time experience and all (and split my sandwich with a friend), but definitely not something I’m willing to do again.

Their pastrami is UNFUCKWIDABLE. It’s almost as if Baby Jesus himself made these heavenly slices of charred beef/​pork after pre-​brining it in holy water.

Katz is a must in NY. You might love it, you might say naaaah it’s ok, still it’s a must go in your NY list. This very old east place served people with the same decoration and quality for ages. Their pastrami, oh… their pastramiiii!!! As you can tell, it’s my favorite for sure. Cheese, pickles and thin slices of pastrami in a sandwich– sounds like a dream.
First day we were there around 8.30 and obviously it was all empty:) however, if you happen to be there past 10 – 11 be ready to wait 20min to walk in. Is it worth it? Of course!!!
And plus if you’re a fan of When Harry Meet Sally, the orgasm scene was shot in this restaurant which gives you another reason to pay a visit.

Coming back in the US after more than 2 years in France, and being back in NYC after more than 20 years, I had certain cravings. Katz’s Deli was made famous in the movie“When Harry Met Sally”, but they are famous to me for their pastrami. There is of course a sign showing you exactly where Sally had what everyone else wanted ;)
Pickles come with every order and I urge you to get a knish, which in NYC, is basically a fried bit of delicious mashed potato, either filled with something or plain. This knish was bigger than both my hands:)
A sandwich is about $ 20 and sides all cost about $ 5; I could only eat HALF of a pastrami sandwich, and if you can finish a whole sandwich in one sitting, I bow to your appetite!

After hearing about this place for years I finally decided to trek to the East side to try it. What an experience!
When you walk in you’re handed a red ticket. Don’t lose the ticket or you’ll get charged $ 50! This ticket is used to account for anything you purchase. Beware, it’s cash only!
On a Saturday night around 8, all the employees were bustling. I recommend the counter service. Why not save on tip? Well, you can throw the sandwich makers a few bucks. They earn it. I ordered a corned beef reuben. The gentleman preparing the sandwiches suggested I try the pastrami. He then gave me a few pieces. YUM! Sold! The person I was dining with ordered the corned beef sandwich. Both were really good!!! I only could eat half. Leftovers. Score. Also, we ordered steak fries which were good.
If you’re looking for a drink they do have a few beers such as Blue Moon on tap. Otherwise, they have soda.
The sandwiches run about $ 20, but are well worth it. It’s a great spot to take visitors or just when you’re REALLY hungry.

Die Zeitumstellung bei einem Trip nach NYC macht es leicht Anfangs früh rauszukommen. So ist es kein Problem auch vor 09:00 Uhr in Katz’s Deli ein Heldenfrühstück anzugehen. Es ist hierzu viel geschrieben, deswegen in aller Kürze. Ein Pastrami-​Sandwich ist gleichermaßen Pflicht als auch Genuss (und Herausforderung ob der Größe).
Empfehlung meinerseits: Omelette mit Zunge, knusprig angebraten. Salzgurken sollten dazu auch nicht fehlen. Ein Grilled Cheese Sandwich kam auch gut an.
Hinter der Zubereitungstheke standen im Katz’s zu meiner Zeit nur freundliche Süd– und Mittelamerikaner, von der Besitzerfamilie weit und breit keine Spur, dafür aber 17 Kameras, die Aufnahmen aus dem Innenraum irgendwohin übertragen. Verwirrend fand ich, dass der Selfservice an x-​verschiedenen Punkten des Tresens bestellt werden muss. Pastrami mittig, Omelette ganz rechts, Getränke links … Der Pastrami-‘Aufschneider’ übernahm das dann für uns und schnappte dafür gerne einen Tip.

La plus grosse arnaque de NYC en terme de restauration !
Si vous aimez la viande qui a du goût, qui n’est pas sèche et bien vous pouvez passer votre chemin.
Par contre si vous aimez payer incroyablement cher ($ 50 pour 2 sandwiches sur place, tip compris mais sans boisson) pour ce qui s’avère être de la viande de qualité moyenne, autant le pastrami est mangeable que le brisket est tellement sec qu’on s’étoufferait avec.
Pastrami mangeable donc mais pas bon du tout.
En plus de ça c’est clairement l’usine, le client est traité comme une vache à traire.
J’ai vraiment eu du mal à saisir l’engouement général pour cette adresse… Même la nana à côté de nous était à la limite de l’orgasme…
J’ai largement préféré la viande de chez Mighty quinn’s bbq et en plus c’est 3 fois moins cher !

Bueno When Harry met Sally y el Hot Pastrami son dos de las mejores cosas del universo y acá se unen: fiesta.
El local está en una zona no taaan linda, pero vale la pena.
Es súper grande y en las paredes de muestran fotos del dueño con famosos ese es el nivel de informalidad.
Podes sentarte y que te atiendan o bien pedir en una barra que esta bastante ordenada: por un lado los sándwiches, por otro las bebidas, por otro las papas… Y podes elegir comer ahí o llevar.
Tienen de todo pero acá se pide Sandwich de Pastrami. Es ENORME. Tiene una cantidad de carne descomunal. Le ponen una mostaza genial y te dan un plato con dos tipos de pepinos aparte.
Es caro, pero se re puede compartir.
Todos son súper amables y hablan castellano así que si no son duchos con el inglés no teman.
Al final pagas y te vas con el corazón contento.

Demasiado caro para lo que es. Tienes que dar «tip» por todo, el que corta la carne, el que te hace el sandwich, el que te cobra. Interesante de ver si te interesa el cine, ya que allí se rodó una de las escenas orgásmicas mas famosas de la historia.

Auch wir waren– riesengroße Überraschung– wegen des legendären Pastrami Sandwiches hier. Der Laden ist ziemlich groß, gerappelt voll, entsprechend laut und wuselig. Da wir nicht wussten, was uns erwartet, haben wir natürlich gleich jeder ein Sandwich bestellt. Wie sich herausstellte sind diese UNFASSBAR groß, was den Preis durchaus rechtfertigt, und ich musste schon kämpfen, um die Hälfte zu schaffen. Noch nie habe ich soviel Fleisch zwischen Brot gesehen! Gegessen haben wir draußen, auf einer Parkbank in der Nähe, weil wir keine Lust hatten, auf einen freien Platz zu warten. Vielleicht nicht die beste Idee– ein Tisch wäre beim Verzehr sicherlich hilfreich gewesen… Es war lecker und auf jeden Fall ein Erlebnis!

Gehört in NY zum Pflichtprogramm. «Pastrami Sandwich» im Graubrot mit Gurke ist einfach «saulecker». Bedenklich sind aber die Preise. Knapp 20 $ für diesen Leckerbissen ist schon starker Toback. Trotzdem: Man (n) muß dort einmal in der Schlange gewartet haben, einen Platz erkämpfen und in das leckere Sandwich beißen.

Nun kann ich auch hinter Katz’s auf meiner Liste einen Haken machen. Ich hatte ein sehr gutes und großes Reuben Sandwich mit Pastrami. Aber war es gut und reichlich genug, dass es 20 Dollar wert ist? Ich glaube nicht.
Darüber hinaus waren die Atmosphäre und die Mitarbeiter wirklich nicht einladend genug, dass ich den Laden wieder besuchen muss.
Wäre das Essen etwas günstiger und die Mitarbeiter nicht so arrogant und unfreundlich, würde ich sofort vier Sterne geben. Aber bei einem Self-​Service unter den Bedingungen bin ich einfach zu enttäuscht.

Connu pour avoir apparu dans le film «When Harry met Sally», Katz’s Deli se réjouit d’accueillir un bon nombre de célébrité (photos sur les murs à l’appui), des habitués new yorkais et des touristes. Beaucoup de touristes.
On vous donne un ticket à l’entrée sur lequel les personnes qui préparent vos commandent notent le prix à payer à la caisse à la sortie. Né perdez donc pas votre ticket sinon vous risquez de payer beaucoup plus que le montant réellement dû.
On me dit qu’il n’est pas possible d’avoir la moitié d’un pastrami alors le menu menu indique qu’on pouvait effectivement prendre un matzo ball soul avec la moitié d’un sandwich. Après ma remarque, on me change le montant et me prépare le sandwich non sans rechigner.
Evidemment je n’ai pas eu droit à la tranche de pastrami pendant l’attente comme tous les autres clients !
La soupe est mauvaise, le matzo ball s’effrite. Le pastrami est sec, le pain est mauvais et fade.

Bueno, bienvenidos a la gloria, al local que es imposible no visitar si es que viajan a New York. Quizás Kat’s Delicatessen les suene familiar si es que recuerdan esa famosa escena de When Harry Met Sally cuando el personaje de Meg Ryan le finge un orgasmo al de Billy Crystal y la verdad que una vez que pisas este local todo tiene sentido.
LOS SÁNGUCHES DE PASTRAMI DE KAT’S SON ORGÁSMICOS, POSTA.
No se puede creer este local. No será el más barato, pero sí el mejor. Realmente los sandwiches son bestiales, de tamaño y de sabor, de esos que pocas probarán en sus vidas. Recuerdo ese momento y me emociono, volvería tan solo por esa delicia.
Kat’s es de esos lugares mágicos en dónde todo está bien y todo es riquísimo. Si dije que los precios eran un tanto elevados, también hay que decir que los sánguches son enormes y se pueden compartir, encima si le sumas unas papas fritas –que también son una locura de deliciosas y aparte mega caseras-​, dos personas comen más que bien.
El local es bastante grande, aunque generalmente siempre hay gente. Entras, haces tu pedido en mostrador, te lo dan al instante (antes te dan de probar su más valioso tesoro, o sea unas fetitas de pastrami) y ya estás listo para elegir una mesa y ser feliz, luego cuando te retiras, abonas y listo.
En fin, es un delirio pisar New York y no ir a Kat’s, esta es una visita aún más obligatoria que lo que pueden ser el Central Park, el Empire State o las Statue of Liberty. VAYAN Y SEAN FELICES.

C’est un incontournable de NYC un must go. J’y suis retourné cette semaine pour la 4ème ou 5ème fois (j’y vais a chaque passage sur NYC) et je me régale toujours autant. Le sandwich au pastrami est vraiment excellent (même si le pain n’est pas ce qui a de plus extraordinaire), l’ambiance et la déco font aussi partie de la magie de kat’z. Il faut vraiment t y aller.

Kurz und knapp: Ein Pastrami Sandwich in Katz ist absolutes Muss, wenn man in New York ist. Mit 20 $ zwar kein Schnapper, aber wir sind zu zweit davon satt geworden, so riesig war die Portion. Außerdem der beste Cole Slaw den wir in der Stadt hatten! Yammy.

Os famosos sanduiches de Pastrami e Corned beef são muito bem servidos e saborosos. Eles tem a opção de se autoservir direto no balcão o que é muito mais rápido. Vale muito a pena, pela comida, pela parede cheia de fotos de famosos e por passear na vizinhança que é muito legal.

Wahrscheinlich der Xtausendste Beitrag zu Katz’s Delicatessen. Nun muss ich auch mein Pastrami noch dazugeben.
Wir waren Mitte Januar 2015 dort. Die Gegend nicht gerade vertrauenerweckend, aber hier gibts nun mal das berühmte Pastrami Sandwich.
Wir mussten nicht anstehen, es war nicht so voll. Man erklärte uns, das links auf den schöneren Plätzen mit Bedienung sei und rechts Selbstbedienung, aber näher dran am Geschehen.
Ok. Wir arbeiteten uns dann durch die diversen Stationen mit Getränken, Pastrami usw. Ein gigantisches Sandwich, unschaffbar. Sehr lecker, das beste, das ich je gesehen und gegessen habe. Dazu ein Draft Beer. Perfekt.
Da unschaffbar, liessen wir jeder unsere halbe Portion einpacken. Eines zusammen hätte auch genügt.
Zum Schluss nahmen wir noch den Service mit der Salami in Anspruch (diesen alten Brauch: (send a Salami to your boyfriend in the army). Unserem Cousin liessen wir eine nach Florida senden. Sie kam tatsächlich in der vorgegebenen Zeit an und erfreute den Empfänger.
Alles in allem Daumen hoch. Ich würde wieder herkommen.

Es ist voll als wäre eine Hungersnot ausgebrochen. Also erstmal draußen anstellen, aber keine 5 min später schon drin. Doch da geht der Wahnsinn erst los…
Wenn du das willst hier, das hier und das … und das ganze in schnellem New Yorker Slang. ÄHM, ÄH… «Ok, what’s your name? … Wait here for service!» Der freundliche Mann wies uns einen Tisch zu und kurz danach kam (trotz gefühlter 20 000 Menschen im Laden) ein Kellner für die Bestellung. Und der hatte Zeit für uns!!! Erklärte in Ruhe und verständlich! Kurz darauf das Essen und wie auf DMAX gesehen, eine Riesenportion die soooo leggga (mit drei «g») war.
Gut, wer preiswert essen will mit gutem Ambiente ist hier falsch. Voll, Imbissflair mit Bedienung und 90 € für 4 Personen sind kein Schnäppchen, aber wer Essen und Flair haben will wie die «Einheimischen» der ist hier goldrichtig und wird lange vom leckeren Essen in NY erzählen!
Ein Extralob an die Mitarbeiter!!! Selten so coole Angestellte getroffen die hinter ihrer Sache stehen. Hier hast du als Kunde Spaß und der Check ist halb so schlimm

Lecker, spaßig und klassisch. Ich hatte die Split Pea Suppe mit einem halben Turkey Sandwich und meine Freundin hatte die Hähnchen Nudelsuppe mit einem halben Pastrami Sandwich. WE’LL HAVE WHAT WE’RE HAVING! Zwar teuer aber, ehrlich gesagt, nicht viel teurer als die meisten Restaurants in der Stadt.

Mi lugar favorito en la ciudad de Nueva York, sin duda. Los sandwiches y sus papas son de lo mejor que he probado, sin duda. Pedí el Reuben Sandwich con pastrami (lo sirve con una rebanada de queso suizo, ensalada de col y aderezo de la casa), acompañado de su deliciosa limonada. Si viviera en NYC subiría de peso con puro Katz’s, realmente es delicioso.

unfortunately did not like the food, ate a sandwich pastrami, beef and other do not remember, the amounts are quite generous but the quality of the terrible food, were really bad, the only thing fries were delicious and it was fun to see photos of celebrities all over the place. Definitely Im not return to eat at that place :(

Muito muito muito famosa, a Katz Deli que fica ali em East Village (sul de Manhattan), visitei domingo de manhã. Abarrotado de gente, confuso para sentar, atendentes mal humorados. Opte por ir num dia de semana e no meio da tarde. Ah eles não aceitam cartão, só dinheiro, mas eles possuem uma ATM dentro. Pedi para rachar o famoso pastrami, sanduíche OK, nada extraordinário, é bom, apresentação horrível, mas nada que justifique a fama. Gostaria de experimentar o de brisket e cornes beef, mas vai ficar na historia pois não sei se volto, sob se estiver passando pelo local. O sanduíche pode ser quente ou frio, pedimos o quente mas veio morno.

D’entrada serà bo que trieu un bon moment per anar-​hi si us voleu menjar el bocata al local. A les hores de menjar sempre hi ha molta gent i cues.
Porteu efectiu, no accepten targetes.
El pastrami està molt bo però s’ho fan pagar. Costa 18 $… més el què hi afegeixis que, per poc que sigui, una parella es deixa uns 50 o 60 $.
Els cambrers no són molt amables i van per feina i has d’anar passant per diferents punts de la barra per demanar.
A dins hi ha indicada la taula de l’escena de l’orgasme de la Meg Ryan.

No busquen que adoren a los turistas ni que te traten muy bien, pero es un muy buen lugar para comer un muy rico sandwich de Pastrami (y el pickle que lo acompaña). Hay lugares igual de buenos y un poco más económicos pero ningun tiene el cartel indicando la mesa de la mítica escena de la película. Si son fans (como yo), vayan. Si no, pueden probar algún otro lugar para evitarse el lugar repleto y la atención básica.

C’est pour moi l’un des meilleurs restos de NYC, avec son incontournable sandwich au pastrami, son burger et sa limonade. De plus les photos qui son sur les murs vous font partir plusieurs année en arrière. Et surtout vous né pourrez pas louper la table de «Quand Harry rencontre Sally». À part allez y je n’ai rien d’autre à dire !!!

El bocadillo rouben de pastrami muy bueno, jugoso y las patatas muy buenas también casi todos sus empleados hablan español y te dan a probar la carne cuando te la cortan recomiendo ir antes de las 2 de la tarde o las colas son inaguantables que es uno de los problemas y puntos débiles de este lugar su falta de organización en la cola pero aun así lo recomiendo mi experiencia fue muy buena

Das beste Pastrami Sandwich aller Zeiten.
Coole Atmosphäre und auch ein bißchen Kino-​Flair von Harry meets Sally.
Aber: Wer nicht genau weiß was er will sollte nicht selbst bestellen an der Theke.
Tip: Waiter Service nutzen, in Ruhe Speisekarte lesen und bestellen. Dabei kann man gut Leute beobachten, eine bunte Mischung aus Touris und Einheimischen.
Tip: Obwohl etwas Abseits der großen Touristenattraktionen sollte man früh da sein.
Punktabzug gibt es die sanitären Einrichtungen, die anscheinend seit den 60er Jahre nicht überholt werden.

Kat´z Delicatessen est le deli le plus connu de NYC, et pour cause, la scèné mythique d’orgasme de Meg Ryan de Quand Harry rencontre Sally…
Mais c’est loin d’être le deli dans lequel on y sert la meilleure nourriture.
Au choix, soit vous vous servez, soit vous vous faites servir. La seule différence c’est les 20% de service, qui peuvent valoir le coup quand on comprend la difficulté de réunir chacun des éléments du menu.
Nous avons choisi une omelette au pastrami bacon, qui était servie avec un jus d’orange, un café, un hashbrown ou des frites. Mais lorsqu’on va récupérer notre omelette, on nous dit d’aller récupérer le café à l’autre bout de la salle. Puis on nous oriente vers un lieu différent pour le jus d’orange et enfin on revient vers le lieu dédié aux œufs pour l’hashbrown… Il faut donc un peu de persévérance et de tolérance envers l’absence d’amabilité des serveurs!
Pour finir, l’omelette était bonne mais écœurante vers la fin car trop grasse, le jus d’orange, chimique à souhait et le café, de la pisse de chat.
Il y a tellement d’endroit chouette à New York, alors passez votre chemin!

Le meilleur sandwich au pastrami au monde!!! Viande juste cuite, tiède, super tendre, un vrai délice!!! Tout est homemade, rien a dire c’est une tuerie d’endroit!

Gegründet wurde Katz’s Deli 1888 in der Lower East Side von Manhattan. «Katz’s» versorgte die jüdischer Einwanderer aus Russland und Polen mit vertrautem Essen aus old europe. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg, dienten dann die Söhne der Eigentümer in der Armee. Damals entstand der Slogan: Send a salami to your boy in the army!, den man heute auf ein T-​shirt gedruckt, kaufen kann.
Auch gibt es noch heute die Möglichkeit an der Kasse für 29,00 $ eine Salami von Katz’s Deli direkt an einen Armeeangehörigen abzusenden.

Jeder der den Deli betritt bekommt ein Ticket ausgehändigt, auf dem Zahlenkollonen abgedruckt sind. Vorsicht! Verlieren kostet 50 $! An der Theke bestellt man dann, Suppe, Knishes, Hotdogs, und Getränke. Die Bediensteten, hinter der Theke machen mit Bleistift ihre Haken auf der Eintrittskarte, an den Preisen der Bestellungen. Beim Verlassen am Ausgang des Lokals händigt man das Ticket der Frau an der Kasse aus und zahlt den Betrag, der ansagt wird. Ich bestelle hier selbstverständlich ein Pastrami-​Sandwich, denn dafür ist Katz’s Deli berühmt. Pastrami (
) kommt aus dem jüdischen und heißt pastrómeh. Das ist Rindfleisch, das erst gesalzen, dann getrocknet und mit verschiedenen Kräutern versetzt wird. Das Resultat schmeckt so lecker, dass ich aufpassen musste, nicht wie Meg Ryan vor Glücksgefühlen aus der Rolle zu fallen.

Ein Besuch bei Katz’s Deli gehört zu jedem NYC Besuch dazu. Ich habe nirgendswo ein besseres Patrami bekommen wie hier, aber auch das Katz’s Corned Beef Sandwich ist ein absoluter Knaller. Es gibt ja sehr viele sogenannte Deli’s in NYC, viele davon sind nicht so toll, man sollte sich schon die Zeit nehmen und versuchen zu Katz’s in die Houston Street zu kommen, mit der Suway oder Bus ist es immer nur ein Katzensprung. Natürlich trägt auch das tolle Ambiente dazu bei das man sich hier wohlfühlt und das es so gut schmeckt, achso ich habe doch vergessen das Reuben Sandwich zu erwähnen, auch hier gilt: ein besseres findet man nicht.

Honnêtement très surestimé. Le fameux sandwich au pastrami est bon mais sans plus (largement moins gouteux que le smoked meat sandwich de chez Schwartz à Montréal par exemple) et surtout très cher: $ 17.
La salle est très grande et l’ambiance pas super j’ai trouvé.

Bisschen Zeit einplanen.
Ich kann jetzt nur von einem Besuch berichten. Lange Warteschlangen, wenn man Pech hat, nicht gleich einen Sitzplatz. Das berühmte Pastrami Sandwich war nicht nach meinem Geschmack und die Toiletten bräuchten dringend mal eine Überholung.

Tres bon pastrami (pour le moment le meilleur pour moi).
Un sandwich pour deux suffisant.
Bön choix de bière pression.
Ambiance et décor à voir au moins une fois.
Une adresse incontournable donc.
Attention il peut y avoir de la queue le weekend !

LA fameuse adresse, LE restaurant de «Quand Harry rencontre Sally» et surtout, une escapade culinaire incontournable à Manhattan!
Il y a du monde, beaucoup de monde. Donc autant venir très tôt ou en début d’après midi. Le système de tickets est rigolo. On paie à la sortie.
Bien sûr, tout le monde craque pour le délicieux sandwich au pastrami. Les cuisiniers proposent souvent une tranche pour goûter (et récupérer un pourboire). Les frites sont énormes et délicieuses.
Le hic, c’est de trouver une place assise. Une partie du restaurant est réservé pour les clients avec un service assis. Donc un peu galère mais ça tourne vite!
Par contre, cela reste très bruyant.
Dans mes souvenirs, c’était assez cher mais vu la quantité de viande servie, on né peut pas en être étonnés.
A né pas manquer!

Das Katz’s Delis hat auf jeden Fall seinen eigenen Flair und den muss man lieben. Das Essen ist dort sehr fleischlastig, aber dafür sind sie ja berühmt. Pastrami ist lecker, Chicken Salad gewöhnungsbedürftig. Das Lokal muss man auf jeden Fall einmal gesehen haben, es ist etwas besonderes.

DER Laden, wenn es um Pastrami-​Sandwiches geht!
Wenn man den Laden betritt, fühlt man sich gleich in die 60er-​Jahre zurückversetzt! Man kommt zuerst an der Kasse vorbei, an der man später zahlen muß. Dort empfängt man seine Pappkarte, auf der alles notiert wird was man sich so reinpfeifft.
Dann erwartet einen eine über 20 Meter lange Theke, wo man die verschiedensten Gerichte frisch zubereitet (ggf. Auch koscher) bestellen kann.
Also bin ich gleich zu einem Pastrami-​Fileteur gegangen und habe mir ein Wahnsinns-​Sandwich machen lassen (Tip: Pommes dazu kann man getrost weglassen!), dazu gibt es (nämlich) frische und eingelegte Gurken. Dann nimmt man an einem der vielen Tische Platz und genießt sein Essen, während man auf die Trophäenwand guckt, an der sich verschiedenste Bekanntheiten mittels Foto verewigt haben.
Danach zahlt man an der Kasse (kann noch einige Merchendising-​Artikel kaufen) und fällt dann wieder in die Wirklichkeit des aktuellen New Yorks ;)

Wenn man in New York ist muss man auch einmal bei Katz’s Delicatessen vorbei schauen!
Man muss (wie in allen qualitativ guten Lokalen in New York) allerdings schon etwas Wartezeit einkalkulieren. Das weltbekannte Pastramisandwich bekommt man nirgendwo in vergleichbarer Qualität. Die Preise sind allerdings gesalzen!

Une réputation surfaite et trop cher pour la qualité médiocre de la nourriture. Venez plutôt faire un tour à Montréal et essayer Schwart’z sur le boul. St-​Laurent ou Pete’s Smoke Meat à l’Île Perrot, 100 fois meilleur que le délabré Katz’s

Pour le prix honnêtement je fais jamais gaffe tellement c’est bon .

Mir hat’s gut gefallen! Das pastrami Sandwich ist wirklich sehr gut. Nur ein wenig zu salzig. Auch die pikles waren sehr salzig anstatt sauer, wie wir es von unseren essiggurken gewohnt sind. allerdings sind diese 3-​Fach belegten Sandwiches keine Seltenheit in den Staaten sondern eher an der Tagesordnung. Preis Leistung ist grenzwertig (recht teuer).

Un grand classique à faire au moins une fois quand on se rends à NY! C’est très lourd, on a du mal à finir, mais que c’est bon avec une bonne dose de moutarde à l’américaine (donc sans le piquant à la française !)
Par contre il faut manger serré contre les autres touristes qui se sont rués là aussi !

Étape obligée de tout voyage à NYC qui se respecte, le restaurant de Quand Harry rencontre Sally ! En plus, double raison, il faut absolument gouter les sandwichs au pastrami ! Vous savez le pastrami, préparation de viande de bœuf trempée dans de la saumure, puis fumée, et farcie de graines de piment vert? Miam !
Bön, c’est sûr que les autres touristes qui né manquent jamais dans la grosse pomme, ont bien compris aussi que c’était sympa de s’arrêter dans ce resto mythique ! Donc y aller tôt ou tard si on veut éviter l’attente !
Mention spéciale pour les toilettes, restées «dans leur jus» comme on dit !

So over rated…
Alors oui ok, chez Katz’s y a de la célébrité qui passé (les murs sont tous recouverts de photos des célébrités qui y ont mis les pieds). Oui c’est un lieu mythique (c’est ici que Meg Ryan prend son pied dans «Quand Harry rencontre Sally»).
Oui c’est un lieu typique.
Et oui le pastrami y est très bon, enfin sauf après quelques bouchés en fait. C’est ultra gras… Impossible de finir son sandwich sans entrainement, car arrivé à la moitié on a le cœur au bord des lèvres.
Les autres plats proposés sont du même acabit. Et c’est en plus vraiment cher pour New York et pour ce que l’on vous sert qui n’a rien de raffiné (en moyenne 17 $ le plat).
Et pourtant, malgré un service vraiment mal embouché, malgré le style cantine pas très confortable du lieu, on s’y presse et ce né sont pour la plus part que des habitués. Et oui pour une fois, ici les touristes se font plutôt rares.
A faire tout de même une fois pour son côté typique et mythique.
Mais attention, un ticket est distribué à l’entrée (le paiement se faisant à la sortie après avoir consommé) et malheur à celui qui perdra celui-​ci car il vous en coûtera alors un petit 50 $ !

Un delicatessen excellent. Leur pastrami est le meilleur que j’ai mangé de ma vie. le sandwich est copieux et la viande coupée à la demande.
Une adresse qui vaut le détour: tout est authentique !

Für mich gehört Katz’s definitiv zu den New Yorker Sehenswürdigkeiten, wenigstens für alle Harry und Sally Fans. Hier spielt die berühmte Orgasmus Szene!
Katz’s ist das, was man sich unter einem Deli vorstellt. Die Qualität ist gut, die Atmosphäre toll, es ist rustikal und man trifft viele alte New Yorker (und viele Touristen) und die Preise sind sogar für NYC Verhältnisse hoch. Trotzdem, man sollte einmal ein Pastrami Sandwich und eingelegte Gurken gegessen haben.

Tres bon, tres new-​yorkais, de gouteux Delis, il y a plein, mais KATZ est vraiment pas mal, si vous etes dans le coin, ca vaut le coup.

Endroit très sympa. Pour une fois, ça né sent pas le gras mais le cornichon! Le cadre est original. On y mange quasiment exclusivement des sandwich au pastrami.

Uns hat es so gut gefallen das wir gleich zweimal während unseres NY-​Urlaubes bei Katzs waren. Tolle Atmosphäre, als wenn sich in den letzten 30 Jahren nichts geändert hat und das glaub ich auch!
Das erste mal mussten Pancakes für uns beide her = pappensatt und überglücklich für 7 Dollar! Beim nächsten Mal mussten wir natürlich das Pastrami– und das Reuben-​Sandwich bestellen mit jeweils knapp 15 Dollar schon ziemlich happig aber dafür war es auch die besten Sandwiches, zumindest nach meinen Ermessen, die man irgendwo in NY kriegen kann. Nach ersten Zweifeln wie man diese Prachtexemplare Essen und vorallem schaffen kann, haben wir es dann auch geschaft.
Nach den Sandwiches hatten weder ich noch mein Mann den Rest das Tages in irgendeiner Art und Weise noch Hunger. Also sehr gut angelegte 15 Dollar pro Person!!! Obwohl ich noch so gerne den Cheesecake, Burger oder Bagel gegessen aber ich war SATT!
Übrigens, sogar Schulklassen machen ihre Schulausflüge zu Katzs, der Jüdischen Kultur wegen.
Wir hatten sogar noch das Vergnügen, das der Besitzer einpaar Worte mit uns in Deutsch «Wurstfabrik» (auf das Schild an der Aussenfassde achten) wechselte. Achja, nicht von der Aussenfassde abschrecken lassen, die wirkt zwar nicht sonderlich einladend aber der Laden hat es in sich!
