Kang Suh Restaurant

Was a pricey but still ok place for Korean. I had the Jaeyook Gui ($ 28) which had a little too much fat for my preference. The banchon was ok too. I also had a glass of chardonnay ($ 8). Service wasn’t bad which is what I usually expect in a Korean restaurant. I guess overall the meal was just average but for the prices they charge, I did expect more.

Went here for my birthday with a big group about 16 people.
Cons– Service was super slow, waitress was not attentive, bartender left for the day or something weird so no alcohol was served
Pros– food was good
Wouldn’t go back here!

I was surprised by the fact there were negative reviews because I’ve been eating here for 30 years, possibly because it was my father’s favorite Korean restaurant (and he actually spent time in Korea). I hadn’t been in a while but decided to go with my brother and sister-​in-​law and while it wasn’t very busy, I found the food and service to be everything it’s been. I had some delicious shumai and spicy octopus and my sister-​in-​law had bbq salmon (which I tried) and both dishes were delicious and plentiful. The prices are a little steep (in the 20s for entrees) and the menu is smaller than it used to be but I found some good stuff to eat and I’m still content with this place for more high-​end Korean cuisine. (They also have DIY BBQ grills so maybe some of the complaints about food were from people who are shitty cooks themselves.)

It’s to bad that I have to write so much the meat was totally tasteless and frozen I had paid for it but could not eat most of the food. I hate to write bad reviews because I know it could mean loss of jobs for people but they need to improve

The customer service here is horrible. It feels like their whole purpose is to get you out as soon as possible (even though the place wasn’t busy). Our meal was very rushed. The waiter who took our order disappeared and we never saw him again. Everyone else neglected us, so we had to flag down the host to get us our check. He hovered over us until we paid. Very strange behavior. The whole dining experience was bizarre and rude. The food was mediocre.

Waiting staffs are very good and very accommodating when it came to changing seats.
Food is very good I highly recommend this place

Service was good but the food was subpar. We ordered the spicy combo bbq which came with pork, chicken, bulgogi and kalbi. The quality of meat was lacking but the taste was okay. We also received the egg jjim which tasted well enough but the rest of the banchan was kind of meh. We came here because all the other bbq places in ktown had an hour or so wait and they were able to seat us immediately but you would be better off waiting for another restaurant.

Price was as expected for Manhattan Korean bbq. Side dishes were average. Taste of the bbq was expected. Décor is lacking. Looks like they don’t care about renovating or keeping up with the times. But it’s not deplorable. They keep the place clean. At least the place isn’t crowded and I could hear myself talking.

Kang Suh has been serving Korean food to the 32^nd street Little Korea area for more than a decade and unfortunately they have really lost touch and their food is quite subpar now. In all honesty, there are a lot better options in the neighborhood so you should pass this place up.
Ambience: Kang Suh has not updated their restaurant from the first time I ate there more than ten years ago. However, since the styling is typical for a Korean establishment theme-​wise it’s not really an issue. They have some of the largest seating available in the area so would be good to accommodate large parties.
Food: Their food is kind of bland and the Korean appetizers were disappointing.
Value: Pricing is consistent with other restaurants in the area. $ 12 – 16 entrees.
Service: Staff is attentive and efficient. Perhaps a little pushy during lunch time trying to turn over tables.
Location: At the end of 32^nd street, Little Korea, towards Broadway. There is a parking lot next to it but forget about street parking as this area is super busy.

This place is open ²⁴⁄₇. Just looking at the menu I could tell this place charges a premium for its food and service. My friend and I had one of the korean bbq deals for two and the meat was pretty good. The waiters were very quick about changing the grill top once they saw the char building. The staff here seem very jaded about being there; they didn’t ignore us but didn’t necessarily pay attention to us either. Would I come back here? Hmm, probably not. I feel like I could get my money’s worth elsewhere.

This place hit the spot. A very non-​traditional US Thanksgiving dinner with family of 6 people. Thinking we order too much — beef ribs, beef, pork belly and shrimp but we finished it all. The foods was fantastic. The service was exceptional, different from other Korean BBQ restaurants I have been to, at this place they essentially cook all the food for you so you don’t screw it up. They also replace the grill with a new one after cooking every meat so that there is no build up of char and carbon, a very nice touch. The only complaint is the vents are not too strong, since the restaurant was full it became somewhat smokey…

The fact that it’s 24 hours is amazing — Japchae (glass noodles) is always on point and the bbq is yum. If you are not korean, they will cook it for you. Just a weird thing that I noticed that they let the Koreans cook their own, but non-​koreans (even other asians) they will cook for you. Which is fine.
They used to have a wild happy hour with 50% off meats, but that is now folklore. Not a cheap place, it will add up — but it’s yum. So bring your korean and non-​korean friends and explore the korean delight.

We got the porridge and a spicy sliced beef noodle dish. Both were pretty good and the small appetizer dishes were nice! The service was fine with giving refills of the small plates and were generally nice.
We were both full after the meal and the bill came to less than thirty dollars. Pretty good meal I thought. Will come back!

I can’t get over how pricey this place is. I joined some friends here for dinner and was a little late. I was left with a small plate of meat and a small bowl of cold noodles. I asked for another round of banchan. At the end of this meal, I paid $ 40. This is insane! Maybe I’m used to LA Korean food prices but this margin must be crazy.
The food was ok. Nothing special.

A pretty standard Korean restaurant at the one end of K-​town near Broadway. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit Kang Suh, but I’m glad they are on Seamless whenever I am craving Korean food (though I am not a fan of its $ 35 minimum for delivery).
I have ordered the Duk Gook and the Gopdol at Kang Suh. With the second option, I was experimenting to see how they would deliver dolsot bibimbap, which is a dish that must be eaten when its sizzling hot. Well, I learned my lesson to never order dolsot for delivery again.
The portion for Gopdol ($ 17), which is rice with assorted vegetables cooked in a sizzling stone bowl, was MUCH smaller than what you would get at a restaurant. They also pre-​mix all the vegetables and rice with the spicy red sauce in advance, and I didn’t get any of the crackled, crispy rice at the bottom — that’s the best part of dolsot!
Duk Gook ($ 14) tasted fine. It was served in a long cup/​bowl full of sliced rice cakes, scallions, egg, and beef. I asked for dumplings to be added, but they forgot. Duk Gook also comes with a side of brown (but it’s more of a black rice with beans) or white rice, and different side dishes like kimchi, spinach, and bean sprouts. The portion for duk gook is large — I ate it over a course of two meals.

I’ve been to this restaurant many times and it is a good standby for Korean food. The servers and owners are all Korean so it is authentic. When you go, its best if you go with a group of people and get the Korean BBQ, the staple there.
Once ordered, an assortment of small plates and uncooked meats are brought you to you. The meat is then cooked in front of you on a grill. You can mix and match the different side dishes and meats for interesting flavors.
The ambiance is very casual with two floors of spacing. Keep in mind in Korean restaurants you can wave down your server and it is not rude. In fact, you will likely be ignored until you flag someone down because they don’t want to disturb your eating.
There are private rooms in the back for larger parties.
The food in itself is pretty good, but nothing spectacular. The part that hurts is the price. Korean food is typically one the pricier side, but expect to spend $ 50 – 60 on food and drinks per person. That said, the prices are fairly comparable to other BBQ joints in the area.
If you’re looking for above average Korean food that is easy and fun, stop by, but be prepared to spend more than an average night.

Took a large group of 10/​family in from out of town here for dinner. We were initially seated in the 2^nd floor main dining area, but quickly moved to a private room. Score!
The BBQ and banchan dishes were delicious, but our waitress was inattentive in cooking the meat. We had no issues doing it ourselves, but when we asked who tends the meat she specifically said not to worry about it and that she was in charge.
I’ve also been here in the past for haemool pajun (seafood pancake) and dduk-​guk (rice cake soup) with another friend for dinner… haemool pajun was thin and crispy and delicious and dduk-​guk was seasoned well and tasty.
This place is more expensive than other BBQ places I’ve had… though the food was fine, this place would probably be my 2^nd or even 3^rd choice considering the competition in the area.

Mediocre. It’s been months since I’ve been here and I didn’t remember what the food is like. It’s not terrible and it’s not great, more like okay. It will leave you full but not very satisfied.

Good olé stand by. Site upstairs for BBQ and sit downstairs for the stews/​soups/​casseroles.
I took some of my non-​Korean friends here for dinner on Sat night b/​c BCD tofu was packed & the wait was over 30 min.
Kang Suh is a tiny bit pricier but offers more options and the food is fine. The ban chan (aka side dishes) are few in # but very good.
My friends ended up getting a «kalbi tang» (aka kalbi soup), «yuk gae-​jang» (aka spicy beef soup), and «sam gae tang» (aka baby chicken soup). All 3 dishes were nicely devoured b/​c they are very good.
I wasn’t super hungry so I had the kimchi pancake as a dish (I hate half and shared the rest). This was the 1 dish that was bad — it looked like they over fried it a bit so it was a burnt tasting and a bit too greasy for my liking, but nicely flavored nonetheless.
Also, I like the service — the staff is friendly and they speak some English.
I would come back here time again.

That’s One Good Lunch Box
Food: 4 Stars
While the overall dish didn’t look visually impressive, the flavor certainly is. The lunch box contained short ribs, glass noodles, sushi, salad, and a dumpling.
The ban chan was good, especially the diced up sardines (I’m assuming that’s what it is since the flavor is the same).
The most impressive part of the meal was the short ribs themselves. While looking incredibly plain and bland (other than the sesame seed) I didn’t expect much from the dish. However the flavor was terrific. The sauce (whatever it is) blended well with the meat which was cooked at the proper temperature.
Since I’m lazy I’ll say that the remainder of the dish was good and fresh.
Service: 3.5 Stars
The lunch crowd packed up at restaurant well past 1pm. Despite that we received a decent amount of attention and good overall service. The ban chan arrived quickly and the food arrived shortly. Nothing dazzling, but the job was done efficiently. I am interested to see how the service is during the hours of Korean barbeque.
Overall: 3.75 Stars
I was a bit skeptical when I entered the restaurant when the majority of their lunch specials consisted of bento boxes, but I was pleasantly surprised to find them to be good value for $ 14.
A decent variety is provided so you should have an enjoyable meal.
I was a little disappointed at the lack of Korean BBQ for lunch (actual cooking), but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it when I come back for dinner in the future.
