Kalvig and Shorter Veterinary Associates

Haven’t even had my first appointment and I am impressed!
I walked-​in to gather information and introduce my dogs to the establishment. Standing at the front desk, Dr. Shorter happened to be available to chat. He was more than happy to answer my questions and give me a site-​tour.
Azehiah and the other Tech, didn’t grab her name, provided a plethora of information and resources, as well! From trainers to walkers to ER facilities to vaccination lists. Very helpful for us newbies!
Outside of convenience, what more could you ask for? They operate seven days a week, offer 24hr assistance as needed, appointment times go well into the evening, and for established patients, other services (such as boarding) are also available.
Such a lovely establishment in a beautiful brownstone with one outdoor gate, one attached screen door, and the main door (safety guards in place for the busy city and the curious pet). Great find!

I came here for an emergency visit after taking my dog for a walk when she ate something off the ground and it got stuck in her mouth. I was very frantic and googled the closest vet near me and found this vet. I was able to come in right away and the staff was extremely professional and caring. Someone even called me later on to make sure my dog was doing ok. Definitely exceeded my expectations and would highly recommend!

Wow!!! Where to begin… I moved into manhattan and switched to Kalvig and Shorter after 30 years with my prior vet. Not an easy thing to do! I have two dogs both with medical problems. THEY ARE AMAZING! GREAT DOCTORS, GREAT TECHNICIANS, VERY THOROUGH, KIND, CARING, and I could just keep going on. I just boarded my babies for 12 days and they came back to me as if they were at a spa. I could not be more grateful!

Add me to their list of fans. First, the place is spotless and comfortable. When I asked to see the back rooms before committing to the spay, no problem. (We had been coming from another vet’s grungy office where my kitten picked up a fungus, so I’d learned my lesson.) The staff was friendly and well organized. Dr. Kalvig was caring and took time to answer my questions. After the spay, the office and even Dr. Kalvig herself called daily for follow-​up. One star taken off because of sticker shock. They are big on running tests and the cost of everything freaked me out. My boyfriend was better about it. He said that they do lots of volunteer work with animals, and this helps to support it.

If you like getting ripped off well then this is the vet for you! Called over for the phone and said it would be $ 100 for the visit. In the examining room, the Dr. starting doing random things and never once told me I would be charged for it. I have never once been to a dr who performs procedures without consulting you first that you will be charged. She was doing things my dog didn’t even need done. The dr even gave me a can of food which I thought was a free sample (as most dr’s give out) and never once told me I was being charged for it. I was completely disgusted when it was time to pay. Let’s just say I could’ve bought a tea cup puppy for the price I paid. I will never bring my dog back here… it’s more like a used car business then a vet.

Kalvig & shorter is simply one of the best if not the best veterinary clinics. The Doctor and staff are so good that I wish I was able to see them for my own healthcare needs.
My puppy’s Doctor, Dr. Kalogreas is both knowledgeable, professional, and caring. During the sessions you really sense the care and attention from both the Dr and the Nurse. My puppy loves them. They ask the right questions, and more importantly allow you to ask your questions. They follow up in the evening or the next day with a call to check on the puppy.
I want to also thank the front desk staff, they’re so welcoming, efficient and care about the pets as well.

This morning I woke up and my cat was acting so strange so I called the vet right away and they told me to come right in.
The doctor that I met with, Dr. Kalogreas was so attentive. She asked so many questions and answered all of mine. I did not feel pressured to take any tests and suggestions were much appreciated.
From the front desk to the doctor and everything else in between I am so happy with my experience and relieved to have found my go to vet.

We were very very upset at the way we were handled this evening by the practice. Generally, we liked them — however, tonight was unacceptable. We called that our dog was bleeding from his foot and was unsure if it was as a result of his grooming or something lodged in his paw on the walk home. It was 4:30/5:00 and they told us to come over. My 18 year twins brought him over and their dad joined them there. The receptionist was rude — they charged us $ 164.00 for an ‘emergency visit’ — although they were there with a vet and gave Sidney shots and wiped up some dried blood — I understand this is a business, but I am in healthcare and this was truly ridiculous.

KSV is lucky to have a great staff and vets. They are open on Sunday’s when most other vets are not, they take their time with you and your dog (or cat). In a city of rush-​rush, these people truely take their time and provide great care.

I can’t believe it has taken me this long to write a review! My dog Chewy and I have been coming here since I got him (just under a year). Both Dr. Kalvig and Dr. Shorter are great, thorough doctors who know their stuff. Whenever Chewy doesn’t feel well I know that I can call the office and get advice about what I should do. The front desk staff and the nurses/​techs are also really great! When Chewy is seen by Dr’s Kalvig and Shorter someone always calls to check up on him (how many human doctors do that!!!). I also have doggy health insurance and the staff always files the claims quickly which is really great! Someone else mentioned Derick (one of the nurses) in their review– he is really really great! Chewy loves him and Derick is always super helpful with any questions or issues we have. I would recommend KSV to anyone!

I have nothing but good things to say about Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates. I have been visiting their office for over year and they have consistently shown to be extremely caring with the dogs, very thorough in their medical evaluations and everyone working in their office provides excellent customer service. Recently, my Havenese was bitten by a Pitbull while a dogwalker was walking him and the dogwalker took him to the Animal Hospital on the East side, the Animal Hospital notified Dr. Shorter and I immediately received a phone call from him, concerned about the status of my dog. I don’t think any other vet (or human doctor for that matter) would have done the same. Deric, is also wonderful with the dogs and very knowledgeable. Although, it is a little pricey, the care that they provide my dogs is worth it. I will continue to bring my dogs here without hesitation

I am reviewing KSV as a client and half a decade employee at this establishment. Keep in mind, I have not worked in the veterinary field for a few years now, but have seen plenty of veterinary establishments, and I have nothing to benefit from this review. I’ve worked with Dr Kalvig and Dr Shorter as a lead technician for many years and have seen first hand how they treat their clients and patients. They treat each and every patient with absolute care, tremendous in detail, and top quality medicine. They are straight forward with their diagnostics so they can find the root of each patients ailment with no BS. I have seen them help patients dodge diseases by using quality preventative care all way to helping animals when they are at the end stages of their life.
Both doctors pay extremely close attention to detail. In fact, they pay so much attention to detail, it may spin their staffs head, but to put that all in perspective, the detail is what saves many animals life. Dr Shorter, as a surgeon, will probably be one of the best veterinary surgeons you’ll ever come across. I’ve seen him, first hand, perform some of the most toughest surgeries without breaking a sweat. His confidence and ability portrays in the work he provides.
Lastly, you will not find the type of customer service quality they provide anywhere else. They will call the hospital to check up on their patients and clients after hours, on the weekends, at dinner, everywhere and anywhere. I can even recall receiving phone calls from Dr Kalvig, checking up on her patients while she was vacationing half way across the world. After many years working with them, I can’t even quite recall a specific time when they were truly not available. They are hard working doctors and treat all their clients with respect, care, and passion.
Dr Kalvig and Dr Shorter are truly kind and passionate doctors and human beings. We are all very lucky to have such great doctors in the veterinary field who also share our passion for animals. Needless to say, I use to bring my amazing orange cat to see them when he needed medical attention when he was still with me. I wouldn’t bring my cat to anyone else cause I knew the doctors and staff would care for my cat like he was part of their family! h

I hate to be the contrarian here, but I have to admit my experiences at Kalvig & Shorter have been short of stellar. I first came here during an emergency on a late Thursday night because I found my mischievous little kitten’s face stuffed in a bowl of sauteed veggies (including onions and garlic — deathly for animals!). Although the hours of operation are 8AM to 11PM, they actually don’t have a doctor on the premises after 6PM. However, the receptionist on site was kind enough to refer us to the ASPCA Animal Hospital So just for your reference, if something happens to your pet and you seek immediate attention past 5−6PM, don’t be misled by the hours stated on their website.
My second experience here was for the mandatory preliminary checkup prior to my kitten’s neuter appointment. For some basic blood work and a vaccination, you cannot even believe how much this one measly appointment cost. Let’s just say I could have purchased a Louis Vuitton kitten carrier for what we paid (and if they actually made those). We subsequently requested a quote on the neuter and again, it was preposterous. Thereafter we made the executive decision to do some research on other veterinarians in the neighborhood and found that KSV’s prices are just way above the mean so we contacted them to request our medical records and told them we would be working with another vet for the neuter procedure. They immediately got back to us and told us they can drop the price down by $ 135 because they included an overnight stay in the estimate… oh gee thanks for being completely transparent with us initially. At this point, even with them taking out the overnight costs, the other vet we ultimately decided to go with was still much cheaper.
With all the equally great vet practices in this area, probably won’t be back here again.

I was in desperate need of heartworm chewable’s for my dog. I can never make my own vet before they close due to my work schedule. I needed to find a vet in the city and looked for the one closest to my office. Fortunately for me I stumbled upon Kalvig & Shorter and specifically Candice. She had a total of 30 minutes to contact my vet on Long Island, receive a faxed prescription and provide me with the heartworm chewable’s that I needed. Candice managed to perform this task with ease and with a smile!
Long story short, these guys are awesome and I’ll use them whenever I need a vet in the city.

Best Vet I ever had! They got my cat in right away when they were closing at 2 on a Sat. They spent an hour talking with me about my options instead of being rushed to leave. Showed me xrays. They called that same night on a SAT! To see how my cat was and called me on Sun too! On Mon doctor Shorter called me himself and spent 30 min on the phone with me. They are kind, smart and i am so glad I left EAST SIDE ANIMAL — horrible mean — rushed and never call back even. I highly recommend this vet and DR. Shorter! If you love your pet this is the place to go!

Amazing! On a horrible slushy no good very bad day, I took our two cats to this vet because the one near Union Square was closed on the weekends. The doctor was so sweet and she followed up with us a couple of times for prescription diet food for our chubby Bella (who has since lost at least 2 lbs) and for a toothpaste for both cats as well as a gel/​paste to help with furballs. The staff is very attentive and they were very responsive on the phone and by email. Overall, the office very spacious and clean and I felt very comfortable there versus the vet offices I’ve seen in Philadelphia where I adopted my two pets. I will definitely be back for their annual exams! (Overall, very affordable for all the annual exams/​tests and they even provided us with a loaner carrier that we later returned, but that was so sweet that they trusted us with it! The soft case we had brought had to be thrown out so they lent us the one they had in their office.)

One word: Fantastic. Everyone at Kalvig and Shorter seem to be very dedicated to customer service. They are always responsive (they just replied to my email within 3 minutes!), constantly making time for visits and consultation, and they don’t let any detail slip away. Our vet is Dr Shorter and he is just about the nicest, most professional and caring vet there is. Even when he’s not physicially in his office, he calls to check in and see how our pup is doing, and the staff calls as well. They also were prompt and successful in assisting with our pet insurance paperwork. I recommend all dog lovers to KSV. Now if only I can find healthcare for humans just as good…

I recently had to put my dog to sleep, which was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. He was 19 and 8 months old and the sweetest thing ever. I had just moved to the area and thanks to Unilocal,found this very caring practice during that difficult time. The doctor was very gentle with him but I was also very impressed and grateful to Sarah Roberts, the doctor’s assistant. Sarah was so compassionate and warm. Even the card I received from the office had such a nice message from Sarah. I’m grateful for the staff and doctor at Kalvig & Shorter for helping my dog find peace and having his last memory be comfortable and loving.

Kalvig & Shorter is best of breed. My 10 year old lab is a new patient here, and I am amazed by their gift of impeccable veterinary service. Pre and post operative attention to detail, thorough reviews of medical history, compassionate, experienced and professional staff and that small town feeling that you are the only customer that matters in a clean and stress-​free welcoming space are just a few of the things you will encounter at Kalvig & Shorter.

Several years ago I moved from Manhattan for a few years and had taken my dear cat
to at least 6 Vets for an illness that not one Vet could not fully take care of.
I then moved back to the Upper East Side and looked for a new vet.
I found Dr. Kalvig and she treated my care with care and totally cured my cat of a
simple illness that she said was easily treated. Right then I knew I found a great
Vet and my dear cat lived for 15 years.
Well my life experience has taught me when you find a talented, caring professional
