Joseph Carlton, DDS

I went to the Woodmere office today, which was located in Dr. Carlton’s house. The Woodmere office needed updating and renovating as it was VERY out-​dated. I felt like I was transported back to the 1980’s. I had a consultation where Dr. Carlton gave me his honest opinion and kept our appointment pretty much professional. However, at the end of our consultation, on my way out the door, he began showing his wife my mouth and things he would recommend. This is when he began pointing in my mouth, (at this point he had removed his gloves), so he was basically gloveless, and touching my mouth with his bare hands. :-(No Bueno! Afterward, Joy, his wife, sat with me to complete paperwork. She seemed nice and very outgoing. However, she began sharing these elaborate inappropriate stories with me, about how she was mugged and began talking about a movie she saw about a sex therapist and the «sex acts» that were performed in the movie. I felt like I was talking about explicit stuff with my Mom, which felt so «wrong» in so many ways! It was an uncomfortable conversation for someone who I have only known for 5 minutes! I am a Counselor by profession, so I am kind of used to people talking to me about randomness, but this conversation was a bit weird, even for me! It was simply not professional. I do not think I would return there as I almost felt like I was in the «Twilight Zone», which no one should be subjected to.
I think Joy is harmless and probably innocent, however she becomes way too comfortable with people way too quickly! Im sure she meant nothing by it, but I just felt «sooooo WEIRD» afterwards, utterly uncomfortable… Never again.

Last year I went to a dentist in Park Slope. It was the first time I’d visited a dentist in 21 years and he treated me like I was sub-​human and told me if I didn’t hand over 6 grand I’d be a toothless hag. He told me I needed a root canal. I slunk out of his office with my tail between my legs, went to the health food store and bought lots of fancy herbal oral care products and tried to put it out of my mind. When the so called root canal needing tooth broke a little this past weekend, I knew there was no more time for procrastination. I made an appointment to see Lance’s Dad, Dr. Carlton who came strongly recommended by some of my musician friends and the bartenders at Max Fish. He and his wife Joy are a team, and the treatment I received was old fashioned, familiar and informal. I told them what the other dentist said and they said nonsense. They said I needed a filling and a cleaning and fixed my teeth for a squillionth of the price as well as treating me like part of the family. They were so reassuring I want to find reasons to go back more often. (not really). But I want everybody to switch to them.
