History

Established in 1905.

Jena Optical was opened in 1905 by the Kreiger family in The Flatiron District of Manhattan. Besides being a neighborhood fixture, and fullfilling the optical needs of the local residents, Jena Optical has also been involved with many of the various unions in New York servicing their optical benefits.

To fit in with todays economy we now participate with the most popular vision plans. These include, VSP, Davis Vision, Eyemed, Aetna, Spectera, Cigna as well as many local union plans.

I feel confident in the eye exam I had here, but more than anything it is the front office staff who deserve a five star review. After making a same-​day appointment for me, they did a lot of number crunching with me to figure out the best deal for me — anyone who wears contacts but also needs a new pair of glasses knows how aggravating it is that insurance will only cover (part) of one. After we got to a good price I went off to look at frames, but he continued looking into and got me an even better price. So much appreciated!
Buying glasses can be stressful — it’s how you will present yourself to the world for the next few years. But at Jena Optical it was a really lovely experience.

These guys are the best. I went here randomly a couple years ago because it was close to my office at the time. I purposely came back recently (even though I no longer work in that area) because no other place in the city compares. Not only is their selection of frames the most interesting and varied I’ve seen, the staff is amazing! They are helpful and honest, but not overbearing at all. I can’t stand when salespeople hover over you and pressure you into making a decision, and these guys are the exact opposite of that. I trust and value their opinion, and really appreciate them allowing me to try on a million frames without getting frustrated with me.
I’ll be back here again the next time I need glasses, and I suggest you do the same.

Overall, an excellent experience at Jena Optical. Dr. Josephs was a pleasure — super friendly and easy to get along with while still being quick and efficient with my exam and sent me home with some contact samples to try out. At the end of it I ordered a year’s supply from them.
When I brought them home I realized they had ordered the wrong brand. I was frustrated at first, but the office corrected their error quickly and without hassle. I’d already opened the boxes because I needed to include the bar code for a rebate before realizing it was the wrong brand, but they took them back anyway and gave me the right ones. By the time I got the right brand there wasn’t enough time to get my rebate, but I’m happy anyway :)

Really great service! Fixed a pair of sunglasses for me that I didn’t even buy from them. I recently bought them at Bloomies, but the folks there told me they could not fix my frames — which needed to be tweaked. And now thanks to Jena optical — I can wear my sunglasses again.

These guys are rockstars. Went in to get contacts for the first time and they couldn’t have been more patient and thoughtful. Every step of the way, they ensured I was comfortable putting in those suckers (i.e. the contacts) in myself. Also really helpful in getting a prescript for regular glasses too. Can’t recommend them enough! No wonder they’ve been open for over 100 years!

The selection of frames was not as high as some of the larger eyewear stores in NYC, but Jena Optical offers a wide range of frames for every budget. The people there are patient and helpful, making choosing a frame easier.

I’ve now had two yearly eye examinations with Dr. Burrows and both were easy to schedule and with little waiting time. She appears thorough and explains things well.
On top of a smooth eye exam, the best part about Jena Optical is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Last year one of the employees noticed my glasses were all bent out of shape (I fall asleep in them too much!) and without even asking he realigned them. So this year, after the manufacturer of my sunglasses said they no longer carried the parts for my pair and couldn’t fix them, I took them with me to my exam to see if Jena Optical could help. By the next morning I received a call saying they were all fixed and ready for pick up. I couldn’t believe it!
The customer service is superb and I definitely highly recommend this store!

Great customer service and great prices. High quality frames and lenses. This is a fabulous local, small business with genuine, highly-​skilled employees. The selection can sometimes be smaller than I’d like but they can quickly order many other options not in the store. I have been going here for over 6 years and don’t plan to go anywhere else.

I come from NJ to go here. It is a great office environment, Keith and Michael are very down to earth and make you feel at home and comfortable. The only reason it wasn’t five stars is because I’m not crazy about one of the optometrists. Still, I recommend Jena and we will return.

I love this place!!! This was my second time I ever got glasses. First, I love the fact that you fill out the information online before the appointment. When you get there, they only ask you for your insurance card just to make a copy and you go straight to your eye exam.
The doctor took her time to do the eye exam. She explained that I only needed glasses to drive at night.
Michael was so helpful to help me choose the perfect frames. He knew exactly what looked good on me! I am so happy with my new glasses.
The service was outstanding! I strongly recommend this place, they have a huge variety of frames, good prices and the staff is very friendly.
