I’ve been going to James for my blonde color since 2005 when I moved to NYC. For someone with not naturally blonde hair who likes it very blonde, he has been the best as far as getting it right and taking care of my hair to keep it healthy along the way… I have traveled a bit and unfortunately had other people do my hair and it broke off… now I’m back in NYC and on the right track to getting it healthy again with James. I would recommend him to anyone.

It took me a long time to calm down enough from this experience in order to write a review. i have never been treated with less professionalism or skill in the 40 years i have spent on this planet.
In essence, if you have long, dark, curly hair, (or if you have hair, in general!) and want a transformative color and don’t want to end up being insulted by a prima donna, then PLEASE AVOID THIS SALON!
I came to this salon with very specific ideas and instructions of what i wanted and liked, supplying pictures of what i didn’t like.
I shouldn’t have bothered as James proceeded to make me look like Carrot Top had a baby with Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters.
To add insult to injury, when i complained about the color not being at all what i had asked, he proceeded to insult me in front of the other clients. Namely, he called me ridiculous, with unrealistic expectations and insulting me so publiclythat i left shocked and angry.
Sadly, I have nothing positive to say about the hair cut either.
Danielle remained professional and even apologetic when her diva boss began to insult me but unfortunately the cut she gave me did nothing for my face shape or hair texture and am now patiently waiting for it to grow back.
The only positive thing about this whole situation is that i was given a refund (minus the $ 80 tip cash i had given them) but that hardly covers the humiliation, distress and annoyance i am still feeling now at having received a completely botched job.
So do yourself a favour, save yourself $ 500 and much aggro and go somewhere else.
PS: Based on my experience, i have no idea where the positive reviews on Unilocal come from… Probably from James himself who seems to have plenty of time on his hands in his half deserted salon.

Another amazing haircut by Danielle Braun and touch up by James Corbett! In spite of this group of amazing artists working in temporary quarters while the salon is being repaired, they haven’t skipped a beat!

This place is a godsend. James has completely artistically and simply restored my hair color to what I wanted. Sometimes I sit in his chair and don’t have to say anything and he knows exactly what to do. He can make blonde look gorgeous and easy and natural and it always grows out and blends so well with my natural color.
Shu does gorgeous cuts and blow outs. It feels like you’re in the hands of artists with both of them. Everyone who works here is also kind–
It’s the talent of the star-​studded celebrity salons without any of the attitude.
I have spent 3x as much and haven’t been this happy with my hair.

Went here for the first time a few weeks ago, in search of a new regular stylist (close to my apt) for my blonde highlights. Kristen was really great, we talked about the look I was going for and my concerns for drying out my hair (I have been bleaching it and as a swimming it’s KILLING my hair). I am very happy with the overall results and I will definitely be going back when I’m ready for a touchup.

Came here for a private event & despite being a financially struggling person, I was treated with dignity and respect. Let me tell you their make-​up person and stylist is top notch. I was able to get both my hair and make-​up done very nicely and even got to be in pictures for the event. If I had the money, I’d definitely consider going here to get my beauty services. Not sure if they seek hair models but I’d consider it for this place based on the hospitality I got.

James has been my go to colorist for years now. I saw a friend’s hair that was amazing and she sent me to him. Honestly, every time I go somewhere else to «save money,» I end up heading back to James to get back on track with his exquisite taste, professionalism and the relationship we have built over time. I also know I can rely on his stylists for a nice haircut or blowout to complement the beautiful color. The ambiance of his «new» studio is lovely, too. Relaxing environment with an array of beverages et al. The net-​net: James not only has tremendous expertise, he is a friend.

First of all this place is state of the art and modern but maintains a really warm atmosphere. The coloring area is exposed like an open kitchen in a restaurant where you watch the chefs in action. I also love the inner outdoor courtyard where you can hang out on the couch and have your lunch or coffee and relax.
I have been going to the James Corbett studio for about a year now and I am so happy with the services, the people and the atmosphere.
My colorist is Tina who has a very gentle way about her but is not afraid to use her great eye and know how to achieve what she envisions is best for you.
I have had the Solo straightening treatment by Danielle twice and it has lasted both times longer than they said it would. She also cuts hair very well. This product uses less chemicals than most others.
Reena is about the most amaZing person that has ever washed my hair. It is a zen experience. She is studying massage and that is what you get along with your squeaky clean hair.
James has a few Buddhas around the place which add to the good vibes.

Enjoyable experience all around from front desk to check-​out! I had a new Kerasilk treatment done on Tuesday and received more than a handful of compliments and questions from both friends & strangers about what I had done. Maria started off with what I told her was my best shampoo ever – they’re usually enjoyable, but hers completely relaxed me – she has a great touch! Not only did we get into meaningful conversation throughout my treatment, but she also gave me useful tips & tricks for better hair care on my own at home. I loved that while it was busy, it wasn’t a chaotic salon environment and you could tell the clientele enjoy being there. I was referred to the salon by a friend, and will definitely refer my friends and family!

I’ve never written a review before and I’ve certainly never written a review about a haircut. I live out of town and have never in my life gotten a haircut like this so I figured I should write something!
Sho is the best hair stylist I’ve ever seen. His work is incredible. Usually when you get a cut everything is linear and straight. This is not the case here. The way he cut my hair is NATURAL. It’s shaped perfectly without being linear and blocked.
This review is more about saying «thanks». The place is special. It’s amazing what happens when you get people at the top of their game.

I went about a month ago for partial highlights and a cut, and wanted to wait a bit to see how everything grew out, etc.
Everyone in the salon was lovely, from the receptionist to the assistants to James (color) and Shu (cut). I was offered a lovely cup of tea when I sat down for my color, and the salon itself is very nicely decorated.
As is my normal routine, I told both James and Shu to do what they thought was best. James used a glaze first and then put in partial highlights. The color was all done very well, but I can’t say I was in love with the colors chosen once I got home and really looked at it (although to be fair I did not express that at all). My overall color came out with a bit of a red tint (natural is a light-​medium brown) and the highlights took a few days to calm down… they came across as a bit orange the first few days. In the end I don’t dislike it, but I haven’t felt at all like I *loved* how it came out, which for the price was a bit disappointing. Again, I gave James free reign over what to do so it’s not like he did anything wrong per say, I just didn’t love the overall result.
Shu then cut my hair. He was lovely, and explained in detail the steps he was going to use to cut my hair. I did like how my hair came out after he cut and styled it, but he had asked in the beginning if I air dry my hair a lot and I said I did, and I have to say that the cut just does not look good when I let it air dry. I have to blow dry and then straighten my hair (and I already have straight hair) to get it to look decent. That was very disappointing. Overall even when I do take the time to style it, I like it but I don’t *love* it.
I think I probably would have had a better experience had I given explicit instructions, but I really do prefer to defer to what the professional thinks will look best and normally have good luck going that route.
One thing that is awesome is that James founded a non-​profit organization and provides free cuts & color to cancer patients, and he said he is trying to expand the program nationally. I really admired his dedication and clear passion for that cause.

I have been to a plethora of different hair studios around the city the past five years I have lived here and let me tell you this is the best there is. I have some awful experiences with hair color (one place turned my hair orange and one tried to fix it and put bleach blonde streaks to try and fix it!) Needless to say, I was cautious to come to a salon again. However, after researching and even seeing the work they did on TV– I knew I had to try James Corbett Studio.
Tina is a fabulous hair colorist! I showed her pictures of the color I liked and she did the best mix between the two I could have imagined! I showed her what my hair looked like before with my bad experiences and she worked with me to fix the screw ups from other salons. She was so pleasant, sweet to talk to and very professional.
Danielle was my hair stylist and she fixed the botched job I had at the other place and made my hair healthy and stylish. While I only got a few inches cut off I will be back to see her for a more dramatic look after I get married.
The overall vibe of this place is zen, relaxed and fun. The girl who washed my hair (Reena) did an outstanding job that I almost fell asleep!
I would reccomond this place to anyone that wants a great cut and color and experience. I am never one to write reviews but this place deserved one! Love them and will be back to get my color and cut done again!

As I sit here beaming @ my super tousled tresses it dawns on me; I’ve hit a gold mine. James Corbett studio changed my hair life. I was tired of paying exorbitant amounts for my basic hair routine (which consist of a weekly blowout, keratin/​trim every 6 weeks, color glaze every 4 weeks). That’s where JC studio came in, by the time Nate was done w me I looked Beyoncé Jlo fab. He blew out, pressed,& primped my hair to perfection & put in hair clips (for length & volume) all for $ 80.I couldn’t believe the level of skill combined w a reasonable price. Needless to say I’m hooked,& will be going for weekly/​biweekly blowouts
A little about my hair; repeat after me, Afro. Yup, I said it, total jherri curl action, & never once did I feel out of place. Nate totally knew what to do w my hair. He was gentle & knowledgeable, completely blew me away

It’s hard to find a good hair salon. A friend recommended James Corbett and I’m so glad because this place is great!
I get my hair color/​highlights done by James. He’s so knowledgable and takes the time to figure out what you want and what will look nice with your skin tone/​complexion. I was at another salon over the summer getting an updo for a wedding and that other sylist even commented on how well done my highlights were.
I have my hair cut by Chris. He does an amazing job! He takes his time and really works with your hair until it looks just right. He really knows what he’s doing and I was really impressed! He took a previously botched haircut that I was trying to grow out and turned it into a stylish new ‘do. My hair is very straight and fine, so it doesn’t do much, but he cut it so that it lays very nicely and frames my face well.
The atmosphere at the salon is nice, modern, and fun/​friendly. The staff are all very kind and there is ZERO pressure to buy product, which I find to be a rarity.
In short — a great place. Go here!

I came to the salon almost fuming. It was early morning, I needed a last minute blow out and every single blow out hair studio in the area was booked entirely for the day. I tried Blow bar and some other 40 $ blow out places nearby and everything was booked as if it was a zombie apocalypse and this was a line for the most essential supplies.
The minute I walked in, I felt at ease and relaxed. Salon had a calm relaxing ambience to it, and while it was busy, it had an entirely different sophisticated vibe than your dime a dozen «blow outs only» places. The girl at the reception was super friendly, welcoming and had gorgeous hair and despite me being snappy and grumpy, graciously ignored my bad mood and accommodated me almost immediately.
The blow out was 60 $ and it was worth every cent, so I left a 35% tip. Unlike, the dime a dozen blow out bars where they hurry you out and give you one of the «on the menu» styles, the stylist was actually a very talented unique individual. I anticipate I’ll go back to him for a hair cut. He listened to my every word and took his time to blow out my hair exactly how I wanted and recreate the style I had in mind. The blow out took almost two hours, for 60 $ only, you can’t beat the effort/​quality of the final product. I never actually felt rushed, my hair hasn’t been pulled once or worse my scalp hasn’t been burned as it been many times before in those express blow out places.
My favorite part is that entire time, my hair stylist was kind, quiet and didn’t try to bother me with annoying chatter. He just let me be and relax. He was so gentle with my hair and so nurturing in his moves, I was very relaxed and almost half asleep by the time he finished. So much so, that I missed my boyfriend sneaking into a studio and waiting for me. They offered him a glass of wine while waiting and that instantly won them extra bonus points for customer service!
If I lived closer, I’d go to this place all the time. Unfortunately, I don’t, but still will make an effort in the future. If you are looking for a cheap decent quality blow out, this is not it. There are many other places in the area where you can get a cheaper blow out. This salon is clearly a true gem that takes a special effort to create serene ambiance paired with a fantastic hair services and a goal to nurture its clients. It’s slightly more expensive but completely worth it and I would recommend it to everybody.

Best salon ever! Get your hair colored to perfection by James, your head washed and massaged to then be styled/​cut by ms Danielle… They always make you feel and look fabulous.

5 Good Things, 4 Bad Things about my Blow Out
Good: (1) Best hair wash, ever. (2) Salon location — convenient and easy to find. (3) Appointments by email are a breeze. (4) Simone, my stylist, is a lovely person (5) Décor is NY cool.
Bad: (1) Price of $ 60 for blow out of easy to manage hair is too much. (2) I needed volume and a style to last 3 days — didn’t happen. (3) No back combing and just 3 spritzes of styling product used. (4) Felt like I could have done the same style myself.

The salon is is beautiful, very zen and the atmosphere is wonderful. The décor is amazing. Everyone there is so nice, friendly and accommodating. I simply love this place.
Tina gave me a wonderful color! it is so great to be able to relax and not worry if my color will come out OK or not — when Tina works on my hair, it is always amazing! One less worry in my life.
To top it all I got an amazing blowout by Simone.

I stopped in to James Corbett studio upon a friends recommendation. I had been looking for a good modern cut and was very unhappy with my previous stylist.
Not only is the salon zen and peaceful but the staff is super friendly and accommodating!
As for my cut, Gigi did and incredible job and I’m definitely going back. It was exactly what I asked for and more! I HIGHLY recommend her for a hot men’s or women’s cut! A+!

This was my first time at «James Corbett Spa». Came in for a blow out. The wash
was invigorating. Jefferson (the stylist), used a peppermint shampoo at made my scalp tingle with joy. It gets a bit dry as the seasons change, so James the owner suggested a shampoo that would help hydrate the scalp while making my hair shine. It did just that. I ended up purchasing the product.
My hair is incredibly long and thick. It takes forever to dry. Jefferson had my mane
dried, volumized, and super shiny in no time! He also gave me a few tricks of the trade on how to keep the doo in check for the next couple days and how to massage my scalp with a brush to keep my locks shiny. The appointment was non rushed and I felt very welcomed.
The spa has a zen vibe with status of Buddah and Ganesha. Organic makeup was
available for purchase along with artsy jewelry.
I’m a bit picky with a blow out. I like a nice little flip on the ends for volume. Usually,
I’ll end up with big prom curls. Only thing missing is the corsage! Jefferson worked his
magic and gave me just what I had envisioned. I’ll defiantly be back!
