Horman’s Best Pickles – NoHo

Only been here once, I tried the jalapenos pickles and it was absolutely amazing. I love pickles. My all time favorite was Pickle Me Pete before but I think Horman’s Best Pickles will quickly replace that in my heart with their brilliant selections of flavors.

OK so, I totally discovered these pickles by accident…
and I will say that this is the best tasting accident that I’ve ever had…
I walked through a random park in Greenpoint and the farmer’s market was there. I’ve LOVED pickles, olives, lemons and all things sour/​tangy etc. since I was a kid so it was a no brainer to get a pickle… once I tasted them I had to get two pints: Spicy Sour and Cajun Sweet. While they are both good, Oh My Goshhh that Cajun Sweet is heaven. So much so that I finished the pint in less than 24 hours…
I just contacted the owner Nick to see where they will be this week so that I can get a quart (and my fix)! I just can’t go without these now that I have them in my life!
P. S. I’ve given them 4 stars because while I was waiting to be served this random dude just reached his bare hand in the sour kraut and they didn’t say anything to him. So gross!

Oooooh these pickles were delicious! I got sour and spicy sour and yum yum yum! Such great pickles– go pick some up!

The pickles are amazing. Having these on my sandwich makes my lunch 10x better. The honey mustard is my go to but I also get the sweet Cajun whenever I can. I wish they had a storefront so that I do not have to go track them down or order online. That’s my one issue with them (why they lost a star), I don’t want to order online something form 10 miles away, but who is free during the day to go to a farmers market? They should sell to the local grocery stores.

Try the mustard pickles — they’re delicious. You’ll want to save the mustard juice for salad dressing, deviled eggs, or just straight up drinking!

Pickles have long been one of my favorite snacks, probably ever since the age of four. I’ve eaten a lot of pickles in my lifetime. At age 7, I had my first New York pickle — curbside at Guss’ Pickles on my first-​ever trip to New York with my mom.
Since moving to New York a few years ago, I’ve eaten more pickles than ever before. I’ve tried all of the local, «artisan» pickles (McClure’s, Brooklyn Brine, etc.), and these are hands down — HANDS DOWN — the best pickles I’ve ever had in New York or anywhere else. No other pickle I’ve ever tried has had as much flavor as these bad boys — and they offer many different varieties, so pickle lovers of all types can find something that tickles their fancy (dill, kosher dill, bread & butter, cajun, etc.). Personally, I go for the Spicy Sour pickles — they actually have a legitimate kick. Like, heavy breathing, sweat-​inducing heat. These are not weak pickles.
I go through a large container of Horman’s Best Pickles every 1.5 to 2 weeks. Thankfully, they have a tent at the LIC Flea (and perhaps also the Astoria Flea) so I don’t have to trek all the way to NoHo every other week. And because these have ruined all other pickles for me, I just have to have my Horman’s!

If the unassuming pickle ever makes a come back on the dishes of the many lunches served all across America, or in NYC to be specific, Horman’s has to have played a part. Since my pickle purchase a few weeks ago, every lunch that eat out, I’m looking for a pickle to accompany it.
I almost walked right past the covered street side stand, the van full of the salted/​cured cucumbers parked right behind, tipped me off. These very nice guys sell about fifteen variations of the crunchy hand held vegetable. Horman’s does not have poor Pontoffel’s at the helm at the pickle factory, as every bite is crunchy and packed full of flavor. (Lorax reference) Try a few samples as the workers are all too happy to give them out.
Although marginally more expensive than the deli pickles, the freshness and snap crunch is undeniable delicious and perfect to have with a homemade Dagwood sandwich.

On certain days of the week, you might have noticed this temporary pickle stand by the cross street of Carmine Street and Sixth Ave. According to the workers there manning the pickle barrels, they are there every Tuesday to Friday and closes around 7pm although it might be later if business is good.
Horman’s Best Pickles makes their own pickles. Outside of the traditional sour and half sours, which are very good and have a snap to them, they carry some more unusual flavors that are very much worth trying.
The spicy pickle, which is a common stable of pickle places that makes their own in house pickles, are pretty good although it is a step below what could be found at Pickle Guys and the former Guss Pickles, now known as Clinton Hill Pickles. Nicely spicy, slightly sour, the two opposing flavors just missed the perfect harmony inherit at the places I just mentioned.
There are two things that are very worth mentioning at this pickle stand.
The first is their radish pickles as mentioned by other reviewers. Along with the sourness of a good pickle, this version adds a radish flavor plus the slight sharpness and bite found in them.
The second one is even more unusual. The honey mustard pickle. This is one of their premium pickles which only comes in circular sandwich ready slices. This pickle comes bathed in a thick honey mustard sauce. It’s both sweet and sour at the same time. Everyone that sampled this loved it and a few ended up buying a pint of their own.
If you are hesitant about my suggestions, don’t be too shy to ask them for samples first. The friendly workers would be more than happy to give out small pieces to try.
You could buy the regular pickles for $ 1 a pickle, speared in a stick like a lollipop. This does not apply to their premium pickles since they come only in slices. You could also buy them in quarts or pints.

I found this little pickle heaven at the Morningside Park Farmers Market one Saturday morning while running the stairs. I immediately ended my run and decided to go shopping at the market.
When I was done shopping, I hesitantly decided to grab a pickle. The couple who was working the stand were so friendly and welcoming. I asked which pickle was their personal favorite and the woman told me the hot and sour. I went with that one. For $ 1 they will pierce it with a stick for easy eating. As I was about to leave, the horseradish flavor caught my eye and am I glad it did. I only got the pickle on the stick and left. I sat down at a bench and went to town. First, I ate the hot and sour. If I had stopped their, Hormans would have gotten three stars. I went on to the horseradish and was greeted by the most wonderful combination of flavors. The horseradish hit first then the bitterness of the vinegar and dill. I was addicted! I went back and got a large (quart size container) for $ 7. I tried so hard not to eat them all so I could bring some home for my mom to try. I barely made it! Now every time I go home I bring so back.
Anytime I can support a local business, I can. I love that these pickles are fresh, local, and not loaded with preservatives like store bought pickles. The juice is so good that save the juice and mix it with everything from mustard to ketchup for a slight kick.

In the words of Snooki — «I never knew how much I missed pickles and pickle juice. It’s like, an overwhelming feeling that I can’t even explain.»
Yup, that’s how I felt when I sampled these at the LIC Flea. Sampled the jalapeño, spicy sour, kosher dill and sour. All were delicious but my favorite was spicy sour. A mix of both my favorite tastes combined into one! Even went a little overboard and bought a $ 7 16 oz of spicy sour pickles for myself. Nobody else eats them in my household either.

Horman’s pickles can now be found at LIC Flea! Not only are these the best tasting pickles I’ve ever had, but they are also the juiciest! Lots of samples offered and the Bloody Mary mix is a must-​have! This is a pregnant woman’s dream come true! (At least, THIS pregnant woman’s dream)
As far as the guys being friendly, I totally agree if you are talking about the ones in the city or over at LIC Flea. But the dude at Brooklyn Pier couldn’t care less about, well, anything. Good thing I’m there for the pickles and not his entertainment or hospitality. Dude can go eat a pickle for all that I care ;) just saying.

I had bought the Groupon (2 quarts for $ 7, what a good deal) for this place and I finally made it to their corner today. I was recommended the horseradish, and it was amaaaazing. Crunchy, sour and with a serious kick to the tongue. I’ll be back for sure; can’t wait to try out their other flavors.

Found these guys at picklefest 2012 and was pleasantly surprised at their brown mustard pickle. They were super generous with samples and obviously proud of their product. Try the horseradish, too!

Best pickles I ever had. I love the vinegar one and it is so fresh!

These are by far the best pickles I’ve had, and they have some great flavors. The first time i had these was at the Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ fest, and fell in love with their bread and butter pickles. Since then i’ve gone back to their stand and got to try out a few other flavors, all amazing. They really try hard to fit as many pickles as they can in jar they give you. The stand is also in a very convenient location, near like 7 subway lines.

I found these guys at the Rosendale Intl Picklefest last weekend. I feel like the guy who wakes up one day and realizes the grin next door is the one for him. I can’t believe they’ve been my backyard all along.
I LOVE PICKLES! But I especially love hot yet flavorful pickles; Garlic, horseradish, unique hot peppers, mustard, etc. Well Horman’s has them all. The horseradish are awesome. All the crunchiness of a New, the deep rich flavor like a sour, but its horseradish, full throttle horseradish. Equally good, and proclaimed the best pickle ever by my mustard aficionado colleague who views all foods as a mustard delivery device, are the brown mustards. You’ve never had anything like them. They’ve captured the rich spicy vinegary mustard flavor of a half sour slathered in Goulden’s brown. Its incredible!
Now that I know these guys are just down in the village I’m definitely making them a regular stop in my food shopping trips.

Horseradish pickles=EPIC. If, like me, you have a passion for pickles and absolutely love horseradish, you will love these pickles. But Horman’s also offers a ton of other flavors as well. Check it out – the nice guys behind the pickle stand will always let you sample.
Speaking of – the guys who work this pickle stand are SO NICE. Sometimes I think they might be a little stoned, but wouldn’t you be, too, if you worked at a pickle stand? Once, I just wanted to buy a single pickle on a stick (yes, they sell those) but didn’t have a dollar, so they just gave it to me for free. Another time, a coworker of mine who happened to be pregnant went to buy a pint of pickles, and they upgraded her to a quart for free, calling it «the pregnant lady discount.» Delicious pickles, cheap prices, friendly service. Can’t beat it!

I believe this pickle stand is only running through Thanksgiving, but until its season ends, I’m going to be a frequent customer. There is a great selection: Honey Mustard, Spicy Sour (personal favorite), New Dill, Kosher Dill, Horseradish, Bread and Butter, Red Flannel, Sour, Hot Cherry Peppers, and Pickled Tomatoes.
I think they are open Wednesday through Friday.
I walk by here on my way to work and it is so difficult not to stop by. The guys running the stand are friendly, great to have a conversation with, and answer all the questions you may have. I’m not a «pickle» fan by any stretch, but these are too good not to get.
It is $ 1 for 1 pickle, $ 5 for a pint, and $ 7 for a quart — and they will fill the containers to the top. You can also taste anything you are interested in for free.
The quality is great, the price is great, and my only gripe is that there aren’t more locations near me (I believe this is the only location in Manhattan).
