I can’t say enough about this guy. His craftsmanship is perfect and his turn around is beyond impressive. This guy must work in his sleep.
There are not many businesses around like this. I’ve been working with «Henry» since 2011 and it’s a joy every time I see him.

I found Henry Bookbinding through Unilocal and could not be happier. My childhood piano teacher in Plainfield, NJ worked directly with Debussy, Saint-​Saens, Faure and Ravel, so her solfege accompaniment book and the school archives are historically significant. This solfege book binding was broken and she had duct taped it (in blue!) The cover was cardboard and the front was nearly completely detached. Henry spent overnight hand stitching it so it would lie flat (as good music books should), and put a leather cover and binding on it, preserving the paper cover on it with her signature. He is the sweetest and most helpful man you will ever meet. My husband was so flabbergasted at the result that some of his antique books are heading there next.

Incredible! I came here for a gift for a friend and the turnaround time and service has left me very impressed. Don’t be detered by the location (I thought the F train below 14^th was a myth) and the crowded space (it’s on the bottom level of a building and if you walk too quickly, you will miss it).
I came in with 36 pages of cardboard paper and a dream and two days later, I picked up a beautiful, leather bound book with custom title, all for $ 50 cash. The older man working here seems to run the place seemlessly despite there being bookbinding equipment literally on every surface. He told me that he’s been here 25 years and the business for 50. Now that’s old school New York for you! I appreciate the efficiency, attention to detail and all around skilled craftsmanship.

I had a 12 volume Jewish Encyclopedia restored. Amazing results! They don’t make shops (or owners) like this anymore.

I had such an amazing experience. I went here for the binding of both my undergraduate and graduate theses. Each time I needed it completed in a rush. The tiny older man with a huge personality asked me when I needed it by, and promised to have it done ASAP. It was done within 48 hours, allowing me to make my deadline. I recommend this place to everyone. He is very understanding, especially of last minute students. Oh and the quality is great!

Once you step into this bookbindery, located in old lower east side, you are transformed to the classic, old New York, when quality and craftsmanship was valued beyond all. It really is a time warp! So fantastic. And ‘Henry’ is hands down the nicest and most forthcoming man you have ever met.

As a person– so kind and sweet (followed me out to my car when I thought I may have gotten a ticket but he was concerned, always so nice and pleasant)
As a professional– Prompt and always has work done when it’s supposed to be, calls to follow up when he says he will.
As a craftsman– he seems like the last of a breed that is meticulous, careful, and thorough.
Henry (not his real name but that’s ok) has made 2 books for me– fabric covers, blind press stamped. Being a designer myself and having him bind my book of my own works, aesthetics was really important and I can be a pretty tough and particular client. The books are beautiful! I really could not be happier. On top of that his prices are very reasonable and he will turn the work around pretty fast.

If you are an individual binding a book you care deeply about, Henry is your man. He is incredibly humble, easy to work with, and masterful at his craft.
When I met Henry, I was under a super tight deadline — needed something within 24 hours. The book I was making was thick and photo heavy — full spreads of scanned notes and images. It was important that the book open as flat as possible so the spreads could be viewed with out getting lost in the binding [of a perfect bound book].
This is already rare to find in the city —and to find from such a modest, skillful New Yorker in such a short frame, is amazing. I came to Henry with 130-​some pages of silk text paper that Henry then separated/​folded into signatures, cut the pages perfectly, hand stitched and bound with a leather hardcover within the day. He also stamped the title on the front, with some words on the back. The book turned out beautifully — better than I could dreamed of.
I highly recommend Henry for whatever your needs are (artists, photographers, illustrators, children’s books, one off prints especially). He is professional, quick, kind and affordable — especially for the high quality work/​service you are receiving.

I don’t know if his name is actually Henry or if this place is named after the street its located on. In any case, I’ll call him Henry like everyone else on here for kicks.
I brought my bible to be rebound because the fake leather was shedding and pages were peeling off the seam. I tried to do my own fix which involved an extensive amount of duct tape. Needless to say, that was a bad idea. Here comes our pal Henry who not only did a great rebinding job of the cover, he managed to salvage pages I had duct taped which I thought would be cut out in the rebinding for sure. He even added little nice touches like embossing the words Holy Bible on the cover and spine. He also added a bookmark string which I never had before even in the original.
I brought the bible to him Sunday afternoon and by Tuesday he was finished. It cost $ 50 in cash. He also does leather binding too at a higher price range.

Went to Henry for the first time this week to get my portfolio bound. I had special ideas and he executed them beautifully. I will be going to him if I need anything bound from here on out!

Was so nice and helpful! Great value for what you get. The book I had made was actually a portfolio screw post binder. I brought Henry an example along with the linen fabric I needed used on the outside and he made a great replica for me. I’m actually going back to get more made today!

This review is a few weeks overdue! I’m not one to ever actually write a review but Henry helped me enough to realize it was an injustice to him if I didn’t take the time out of my day to inform people of how good he is. I went to Henry and he answered all of my questions and had a book bound for me in one day! I made a book for my girlfriend for Valentine’s Day and Henry bound it beautifully. His pricing? More than reasonable compare to a lot of the quotes I got!
I recommend him over anyone else in the city area!

The owner is such a sweet helpful man! The founder of my company passed away and I had each employee create a page in his memory. I brought printed pages to Henry st. and he had a beautiful professionally bound book ready the next morning, without even me asking for him to rush. Establishments like this are rare and often go unappreciated. I created a Unilocal account just to write him a review and wish I had more projects to give him!
