Gwen M Engelhard, DDS

Dr Engelhard is the best dentist I have ever had. In fact, all her staff are wonderful and really care about their patients. They also are very helpful in making sure you don’t have to pay over the odds and the insurance companies cooperate. I am so glad to have found her office. You go there and feel part of a big family who are genuinely concerned to look after you. And as for her expertise, a friend who worked at nearby St Vincent’s before it was closed has told me that all the physicians would go to her because she is so great at her job.

Dr. Engelhard has been my dentist for more than 18 years and I cannot speak more highly of her. My sister referred me to her… my brother in law, niece and nephew all go to her. I have sent so many friends to her — especially ones that say they are scared of the dentist. She is so professional, kind and in an era of big billing, I think fairly priced. She doesn’t push excessive dental work if it’s not necessary but I’ve had very few problems with my teeth. I once had an emergency and she couldn’t have been more helpful. Conveniently located with nice office (and photos on the ceiling!). And the other big draw? Her absolutely fabulous staff. They’ve been with her for YEARS and are like a family. They are all so nice and kind and again, cannot say enough about them. THE BEST!

Dr. Englehard has been my dentist for 21 years, and is amazing. She puts a lot of thought and care in her work. She not only notes any issues with my gums and teeth, she cares a lot about her patients. I highly recommend her, as I have to all my family friends and colleagues.

I am a person with serious teeth issues. Cavaties galore, root canals, crowns, the whole gambit. I come from a family with bad teeth! As a result, I’ve been to many dentists throughout the years, and have never met one like Gwen. She is pragmatic, meticulous and thoughtful in all that she does, from her actual dental work, to making sure that billing is fair and accurate. I’ve referred several colleagues who have been grateful for the reference. Please ignore the post below. I think the other 5 star reviews say it all.

Dr. Englehard has been my dentist for 7 years and has been wonderful.
In response to the negative post below, I can say that in the 7 years I have gone to Dr. Englehard she has only filled 2 cavities. And she even keeps track of a few troubling looking spots but has avoided filling them yet because they have not yet gotten to that point (and may never) where they need to be drilled out. So my experience with her has been that she is not looking to do unnecessary fillings at all.

I worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital for 20 years and thus was a colleague of Dr. Engelhard’s. She was the go-​to dentist for most of us at the hospital, and even now that I’m retired and live 256 miles away, I am still her patient and always will be. She’s the finest dentist I’ve ever encountered in all my 66 years, and a decent, caring and compassionate person into the bargain. Staff members Marisol and Bev reflect Gwen’s friendly, accommodating and happy personality. There’s a negative review on this board; it’s mean-​spirited nonsense and I can’t imagine what motivated it. Please do not let it influence you. Gwendolyn Engelhard is a a skilled and talented professional, and you can count yourself very fortunate indeed if you are among her patients. Highly recommended.

RUN do not walk out of her office. Dr. Engelhard will perform unnecessary work on your teeth just so she can pocket the money.
I was referred to her by two friends who were also her patients. I went in for a regular cleaning during which she «found» a cavity. I went along with it, because I had no idea what a crook she is.
6 «cavities» later (she «found» one at every visit!!) my friends and I were comparing notes one day and realized the UGLY truth. Dr. Engelhard MAKES UP all these cavities and will drill into your teeth unnecessarily (especially to patients who pay cash so there is no insurance to check the facts)
My friends had the same experience I had with her. This is not just my testimony, but 3 people’s — 2 of which work in the medical field!
During her so called «care» she found 6 «cavities» …and funny enough I had no cavities before I went to her, and no cavities since. I’ve always taken care of my teeth very well, and nothing changed in my routine.
The last straw was when I called her about sensitivity in one tooth and she told me to go in RIGHT AWAY and have the tooth pulled out. This was her assessment over the phone! before she even took a look at it. I’m glad I went to a real dentist for a second opinion and I was told she was out of line, my tooth was fine. And it has been since…
I was just unlucky to meet her, and now I have a lot of metal in my mouth thanks to Dr. Crook Engelhard. I’ not sure what I am upset more about, the metal in my mouth or the unnecessary radiation she subjected me to, so she can justify her «findings»
I am honestly surprised Dr. Engelhard is still practicing and has not had her license taken away.
I realize this is a serious allegation, and I would like to add that I will follow up and report her to the proper authorities.

Dr. Engelhard not only does great professional work, she doesn’t do unnecessary procedures. She understands the limitations and stresses of insurance and helps you understand what to do to better take care of your teeth.
Additionally, I don’t know if this is a testament to her or her staff, but her staff is awesome. Like, funny, friendly, totally understanding of HOW ANXIOUS HAVING A GROWN PERSON’S HAND INSIDE MY MOUTH MAKES ME and they put me at ease. Not an easy task when the subject is a neurotic nyc jew.
