I started my career as a tax consultant at a major accounting firm in 1979, became a CPA in 1981, and thought I was in career heaven, for a while. Over the years, however, I noticed things that troubled me:

I was working long hours with little job security.

Many of my clients were greedy and I didn’t really like them.

Many of my clients were financially successful but unhappy and unfulfilled.

My expertise was in an increasingly complex and incomprehensible tax law and I had very little positive news for my clients.

While my clients wanted me to show them how to avoid their tax responsibilities, I was just trying to keep them out of trouble.

My early mid-​life crisis arose out of two core questions: Is there a better way to do business? Is there a better way for me to do business?

My quest to answer these questions led me back to graduate studies in seminary, but instead of being ordained a minister I studied and wrote about economic justice in a field called social ethics, in which I ea
