Established in 2011.

Fox and Jane is a creative collaboration founded by best friends Lorean Cairns and Billy Canu, who noticed a missing niche in the New York City salon industry — they created a fun-​filled unique salon without pretense, but filled with a sense of family, talent, and a down to earth vibe. We at Fox and Jane salon realize that what is unique about you isn’t always obvious — the extraordinary can often be hidden from view. Lorean has quickly become one of NYC’s most sought-​after hair stylists. Her approachable and open personality, combined with her flawless expertise and timeless interpretation of cutting-​edge style, has earned her the trust of NYC’s most prominent and discerning clientele. Beginning her career in Denver, Colorado at the Aveda Institute, Lorean quickly found a high demand for her celebrated work. She spent several years at an elite Colorado salon as lead stylist and color educator. Continually advancing her education at the world famous Redken Exchange in New York City, she trained with international Redken Artistic Director, Kris Sorbie. Her extensive career in hairdressing includes editorial styling for magazines and commercials, styling for fashion shows, and coloring and styling celebrities’ hair for film and television in addition to having become a beauty and trend forecaster for several beauty publications, including Celebrity Style Magazine.

I’d come to Fox & Jane before for a bang trim, but this was my first time getting a full on wash-​cut-​style. Rachael was super attentive to what I asked for — textured half-​moon bangs above the eyebrow with a shaggy layered ‘do just grazing the shoulder — and totally knew how to handle my frizzy, wavy hair. The shampoo came with an amazing scalp massage, and before finishing the cut, Rachael gave me one of the best blowouts I’ve ever had. (It even withstood the summertime humidity that was awaiting me outside.) She was super warm and fun to chat with and I’d definitely book her again.

This place was fab! Loved it. Super cool vibe and welcoming but high end services with reasonable prices. I had Richie cut my hair and he was awesome. He’s very insightful and made me look like a million bucks. I’m very picky with my hair since it’s fine and hard to manage but he got me. Definitely go to F&J and book Richie.

I have seen many stylists at this wonderful location but yesterday was unreal. I worked with Mary who seems to have a sixth sense with colour. I told her a general idea of what I wanted and she gave me something I couldn’t have pictured in my own mind. She is thoughtful, professional, she really listens to what you want instead of just doing what she thinks would look best. I went in for a routine covering of my grey hairs and left feeling 5 years younger and had fallen completely in love with my hair. She is a gem and I recommend her highly to any/​everyone! I hope they keep her happy there because I will follow her to any salon.

Kiki worked wonders on my hair! Not only was she extremely knowledgable, but she was also incredibly patient and really took her time. I have very thick, curly hair and she worked wonders! By far the best haircut I have ever had. Already looking forward to coming back in 3 months :)

I started out by setting up a consultation for some highlights I wanted done. The consultation was set up with Kiki but it was completely random. I am so glad I met her! She did an amazing job with the consultation and she offered great advice. I ended up booking the appointment for the highlights and stuck with Kiki. Since then I always book appointments for my hair with Kiki. She is amazing! Although it is pricey for me, I still try to go there because it is a great place that does great work. It is well worth it.

I just had a fantastic cut with Lataye and I can’t recommend her and the salon highly enough. My hair is already fine and I had lost a huge amount of it after having a baby so it was looking very sorry indeed when I first went in. Lataye took the time to really listen to what I wanted and was able to advise me on what she could do to help add body. I wanted a cool, trendy textured long bob and Lataye delivered. I loved the fact she knew exactly what I meant about the modern cool look, not always the case with NYC hairdressers. She and her team were also very nice to my little baby girl, so extra marks for that.
It has been a week since my cut and I am still delighted. Don’t hesitate to go see her, you won’t regret it!

Keiffer did a beautiful job on my cut and highlights my first visit; something must have gone terribly wrong in the three months between then and my touch up appointment, because I couldn’t be less satisfied with how it looks now. The cut is sloppy at best, no blending of lines, just an awful cut that I probably could have done on my own. The color looks like my roots weren’t touched, and my hair feels like Brillo after this visit, despite having a $ 50 protein treatment done after the color. I won’t be returning for another visit; paying nearly 400 dollars again for shoddy color and a lousy cut is unconscionable.

I just went to F&J for the first time, and I’m so happy I did!
Mary cut my hair and did an amazing job. I am, admittedly, very bad at putting words to what I want, but she totally figured it out and gave me exactly what I wanted. I had her make a tiny revision after styling it, and this was the first time I’ve actually felt comfortable doing that at a salon. I truly felt like she was asking «Is there anything you want to change» rather than that just being part of the script. I asked for a tiny bit more off the front and she totally obliged — and super fast!
She recommended a few products, but absolutely wasn’t hard-​selling them, which I appreciate so much. I will likely go back and purchase the ones she used on my hair, I just want to see how my new cut works with my current products first and then go back for the ones I like there more!
While styling, she totally explained what she was doing so I could recreate it at home if I wanted, and I LOVE that they really ask what you want as they style — braids, waves, straight, etc — not just whatever blowout they feel like, as some places do.
The wine is a major plus, as well :-)
I will absolutely be back to F&J and to Mary. I’m so happy I’ve found such a great place in my neighborhood!

I would recommend Fox and Jane to anyone, just take a look at their Instagram page and you won’t be able to deny that every stylist there has talent.
I had the pleasure of getting my hair done with Lataye. Before I met Lataye I was extremely apprehensive because I was going in for color correction. A fellow co-​worker had recommended her after I’d had two other mishaps and my hair was F-​d up to say the least. Lataye did an awesome job and now I look forward to how we’ll continue to experiment/​try new things with my hair. She has a good energy and positive attitude that makes it hard not to love her.

I can tell that these people do great balayage and maybe good haircuts for other people, but sadly I came away from my haircut appointment pretty disappointed. It wasn’t that Rachael, the person cutting my hair, wasn’t polite and warm. she was lovely. It’s just that the haircut itself didn’t merit the ~$ 110 price tag (after a large tip) in my opinion. Although we had discussed my hair type and the options I had to add a bit more volume to my hair, the end result was still not really up to par with other haircuts I’ve gotten in the past.
I never ask for anything fancy, just a simple long layered cut that takes care of split ends, removes some length, and lightens the weight overall. I had a good amount of just-​above-​butt length, very healthy, fine-​stranded hair, and I’ve gotten compliments for it at salons in the past but I’ve never had to pay a fee for having it (they added ~$ 15 extra on the final bill for «very long /​difficult to manage hair»… not a big deal but a bit of a surprise at billing).
After I got home, I was also surprised to note that she had cut a completely straight line across the back (this hasn’t been my experience with the better layered haircuts that I’ve gotten in the past, which taper off a bit more subtly). My hair also fell completely flat within about 20min of leaving, in spite of heading straight home. Rachael said she would call to follow up and maybe I would have said something at that point — I’m not the best about voicing my concerns at the time — but I guess any ‘fix’ would require cutting off even more hair which I wouldn’t be too thrilled about anyway as we already took quite a lot off.
Again, the cut wasn’t absolutely awful, just very disappointing given all the amazing photos I saw on Unilocal before making the appointment! Given that I have good quality hair, I was hoping for my ‘Instagrammable’ haircut too but this just wasn’t it and certainly wasn’t worth the price. It’s just hair and it will grow back soon but I may look elsewhere for the next cut if it’s all going to be the same.

If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. I’ve been coming to Fox & Jane for a few years now and this was my second appointment getting a full-​head of highlights/​balayage. I have (or had) medium-​brown hair and decided in February that I wanted to start going lighter. I started my transition with Stacey and she did a great job keeping my hair healthy while lightening it as much as possible at the same time.
I followed up 3 months later with my second appointment, this time with Lataye. She. Was. Amazing. First, I showed her a picture of what I really wanted and she politely told me that it wasn’t possible in one session. I really like that she was honest about it and explained that it would basically ruin my hair to go that light in one session. So she said she would do her best to make it as light and natural looking as possible.
This girl spent a good 2+ hours JUST highlighting my hair. I have never seen someone put in so much detail and dedication into my hair. And mind you, my hair is barely to my shoulders.
After she spent 2+ hours highlighting my hair, she toned it so that it would look more ashy, as she knew I didn’t want it to look super yellow. In between my blow dry & styling, Lataye commented on how heavy my hair was for a short cut (I have super thick hair) and said it would be so much better if I thinned it out a bit. I completely agreed with her and told her I needed to make an appointment to do that ASAP. Well, Lataye, who already at this point had spent almost 3 hours on my hair, said she could quickly thin my hair out in 5 minutes if I didn’t mind. And my hair looked 10x better because of that and the final results were more than I could have ever hoped for in one session.
Again, if I could give this place 10 stars, I would. I’ve already made my follow up appointment with Lataye for August and can’t wait to see how she kills it next time.

I LOVE THIS PLACE.
I have been struggling since I moved to the city 4 years ago to find a great hair salon.
COOPER is a DREAM! He actually listened to exactly what I wanted with my hair and then made it 10 times better than I could have ever imagined.
He gave me a perfect haircut, that looks «fancy» but is easy to manage on my own.
I recently went in and got Bayalage done– and Cooper outdid himself again. The end result was perfect, and I love my hair more that ever before.
SO– if you need a killer hair cut, or want to mix things up with some new color go see Cooper NOW. Seriously RUN!

I switched to this location specifically for Cooper. A friend of mine has always had nice hair, but one day I saw her and I could not believe how flattering her hair color was! I immediately asked, and it turns out that was her first haircut and color with Cooper. So of course I immediately called up for an appointment of my own, and then I lived happily ever after.
He is just a wizard. When I first went to him, he suggested a slight tweak to the cut I had asked for, and it made a huge difference in the way my hair looked and moved. For color, I was happy with the balayage I’d been getting, but doing it repeatedly had made my hair way blonder on the ends than I wanted. He worked his magic, and made it *exactly* like I wanted. I think maybe it’s the color of the toner? Like with my friend, he just has an amazing eye for precisely the right color that your hair needs to get the results you want. It’s incredible.
I didn’t post my review right away, because I wanted to see how well it grew out, and the answer is: beautifully. I went back today, and once again I walked out feeling like a million bucks. He didn’t just repeat what he had done the last time (which I find can be a problem for some colorists– if you want the result to look like it did last time, you have to update your color since your base color is now different), but tweaked it to give me the perfect result once again.

Very disappointed with my results. I was excited to go to a salon a few blocks from me with such great Unilocal reviews. I have been looking for a new salon for awhile, but no luck.
To be honest, I have very nice long hair that I get compliments on all the time. Or used to. I haven’t gotten any since my haircut six weeks ago. I don’t feel comfortable even wearing my hair down anymore. Or up.
I just wanted a simple balayage brightening and a small trim. The bottom of my hair was way brighter but literally had only 3 tiny streaks on the top. Which makes my hair look terrible in a ponytail or bun. And I’m a yoga teacher.
So I mentioned that and how important having my hair all the same length was to me because I braid it all the time. Please see my picture because that clearly didn’t happen. He cut off 3 – 4 inches all around and another inch or two in some sections! I’m getting married in a few months and was growing my hair out.
Everyone was very nice here though. My only complaint is I came in loving my hair and walked out thinking it was um, okay. And then realized after the blow-​out wore off it’s really terrible.
I can’t really afford to get it done again before my wedding now either so I’m just stuck with being unhappy. I’m not messing around next time and will be taking the trip back to Sally Hershberger Downtown for sure.

I have had two amazing experiences at the UWS Fox and Jane, and after my visit with Rachael C. yesterday I am in love. With my hair!!! (You rock too, Rachael!) She combined the pictures I brought with me with her expertise to create the perfect color for me! She is also one of the first stylists to maintain my length, clean up split ends, all while magically adding volume… using the perfect products for perfection! Already planning to fit an appointment in on my first visit back after My move to Denver!

Two words: Rachael Cushing!
I had been seeing her for years in Boston, and was very happy to finally reunite in NYC! Doesn’t matter what color or length your hair is, she can handle it all. Our relationship (because, let’s face it, that IS what you have with your hair stylist) began about 7 years ago with me sporting a pitch black pixie. Today I am a warm blond with long hair, and I could not be happier with my experience.
My natural color is pretty dark, and the roots show on the 2nd week. I don’t know how she did it, but Rachael worked with me to find the tone, the cut and the technique just right to not only get the more natural blonde look, but allow me to go as far as 10 (!) weeks in between appointments and feel/​look good all the way.
Moreover, not sure what concoctions she chooses for my hair, but after just 4 short months of regularly seeing Rachael again, my hair is visibly healthier and shinier. E.g. I had terrible split ends before (you know, the kind that splits 3 – 5 times per hair) — that is all gone now & length is not compromised.
Aside from being a hair magician, she is a pure delight to deal with. Welcoming, upbeat and caring. She will not make you feel rushed, but rather like you are the most valuable client of her entire career.
The salon itself it fun to be in too. Nice tunes (not too loud), bottomless beverage offerings (coffee, tea, wine), and funky décor makes is a treat to go to.
Last but not least, the prices for the level of service are very friendly!
Highly recommend!

I meant to write this review months ago, but I’m suuuuper lazy and am just now tryna work on my flaws. So. I walking into Fox & Jane as a platinum blonde with self-​dyed bright pink and purple underneath. Thought I was cute af. First things first, hospitality here is through the roof. I was offered tea, coffee, water, wine and beer with a smile. Décor is super clean, modern chic.
Kiki comes upstairs and leads me to her chair. I told her I was sick of the purple and pink and just wanted a color correction and root touch up. She calls for backup. Keiffer comes over and assesses the damage. Both look at me through the mirror. Gently, but firmly, I am told that I should be a brunette. GASP. I had been blonde for six years! Platinum for three! My college friends never knew me as a brunette! WHAT IS GOING ON!!!
I politely said I had changed my mind about the wine, and to please keep it coming. But, I gave them the nod. Kiki brought me back to my roots (that pun was wholeheartedly intended) and when I made the big reveal (my friends were waiting for me at brunch, after I live-​tweeted the entire experience) and the CROWD WENT WILD. Kiki changed my life for the better that day, and once more when I let her chop most of my hair off and dye me even darker.
I have since moved to LA and never got to say goodbye, but just know whenever I am back in the city, I will stop by for hugs and hellos. and maybe a bottle of wine for old times sake.

I had a great experience here.
A little while back I had a super sloppy balayage done (think blotchy and they didn’t try to fix it) at another salon that I tried for the first time… and so I was a little nervous about trying a new place again since (especially because my hair was now fixed)…but since they had great reviews, I figured I would give it a shot to go a little lighter and try to be as upfront as I could about how complicated my hair is and also what I was looking for.
I’m happy I took a chance! I really love my hair and thought that Cooper did an awesome job. He pays really close attention to detail and communicated everything very clearly. He was a little quiet at first, but I think he was just concentrating on what the F he was gonna do with this head of hair. He opened up through the appointment and I had a great experience.
When the time came around to pay, the service was in the middle range of the price quote I was given and I left a happy customer :)

If you read any of my other reviews, you’ll see that I’m a hair snob. I really have a hard time trusting people with my hair because it just gives me the cold sweats when I know I’m due for a hair cut and I haven’t found a salon yet.
I moved to NYC in December of 2014 and was desperately in need of a hair cut by the time I finally got settled. I did my research on Unilocal,looked up Instagram accounts of the hair stylists that worked there… basically, I was social stalking hair salons (creeeeeper status!)
I’m so glad to have found Lataye because not only does she cut the perfect amount off each time without me having to worry that I’ll be walking out on the verge of tears from lack of length, she’s been able to get me to the Chrissy Teigen (my spirit animal) blonde I’ve been wanting for a while. She did such an amazing job, my mom thought my hair was a wig!

Ritchie Andrew is a very talented colorist. He did a wonderful job trimming & coloring my hair, which had streaky baliage color gone brassy. Richie knew exactly how to darken my base and use lowlights to create a beautiful natural blend of colors. Great, friendly staff. Stacy was my colorist, she was lovely and so talented, she exceeded my expectations and I ended up having my hair on their Instagram, which is super cool :) Will not be seeing anyone else when it comes to my hair. I had a great experience at Fox & Jane Salon with Lataye as my stylist. I wanted to bright up my blonde hair with some highlights that looked fresh and natural. Lataye took the time to really understand what I wanted and I felt like we were on the same page immediately. By far the best hair service I’ve ever had. My hair stylist was Kiki, who first sat and talked with me about what I wanted done to my hair. She told me about realistic approaches to make my damaged blonde hair alive again. I have been highlighting with foils for most of my life and today Kiki corrected all of the harsh lines and orange undertones with a half head balayage and toning session. I came out with stunning ashy blonde hair! She also trimmed my ends to get rid of my split ends and showed me how to style my hair according to the picture I showed her. After I was completely awed by her work, I purchased a few products that she had used on my hair. I am totally obsessed and I will be back to see her time and time again!

I’ll start by saying that this salon has so much personality and charisma. Now I am Latina, with wavy and curly hair that either needs to be tamed with heat or styling products. Air drying my hair without any products would result in a scary combination of frizz, waves curls and god knows what else.
After doing some extensive research as to which salons to go to for a balayage and olaplex with an experienced stylist, I stumbled upon Fox and Jane.
My stylist was Jackie. She was great and I could tell off the back she knew what she was doing. I showed her a few pics of what I wanted (Pinterest) and she was honest with me as to what was achievable which I truly appreciated.
All in all I loved my cut and color.
However, my reason for 4 stars was primarily due to how my hair was blown out. Upon leaving the salon it looked beautiful but within an hour my curls fell and my hair felt like it was not thoroughly dried through. My scalp felt coarse and it looked brittle. Had she applied more heat or flattened it a little more I would of definitely given this place 4 stars. I had to go to another salon near my way and get a touch up on my roots the next day because I simply could not go to a holiday party in the condition my hair looked.
All in all, this place is great and mostly all the stylist at this location did an awesome job on hair cuts and color. I would definitely recommend but would tell the stylist to dry my hair a lil more throughly next time.

This was my first time getting my hair dyed. I had my appointment with Stacey. She did such a splendid job with my hair, that I couldn’t even recognize my own hair. This is going to be a long review, mainly because I’m not just happy with how my hair turned up to be, but the whole service was amazing.
To begin with, my appointment was by the end of the day, but Stacey seemed to be in no hurry. She took her time to do my hair. This is just how awesome the whole service (and Stacey) was:
1. I had appointment for a Double Process, and bang/​trim. I thought bang/​trim meant either a bang or a trim, and I wanted a trim. Later to realize it was a bang trim. But Stacey was super nice about it. She was like, that’s fine we’ve plenty of time. So she gave me a trim (basically for $ 10).
2. Because this was my first time, I was uncertain what exactly I wanted. I did not even look up pictures before hand. All I knew was, I didn’t want my hair light. Later, in the salon, I pulled up some pictures, picked one, and it was mimicked beautifully.
3. Stacey suggested I keep my root my natural color, since this was my first time coloring so obviously I wasn’t decided if I’d keep on coloring. That way I’d not need tough ups. It was nice of her to be honest :)
Almost a week after the double process, I am still absolutely in love with how my hair turned out to be, and I’ve also been complemented by everyone. I do recommend this place, and if I do decide to keep on coloring my hair, I’d definitely got back to Stacey at Fox and Jane.

I never had a better day at work than I did yesterday: my new ‘do got compliments left and right, thanks to Ritchie and the amazing crew at Fox & Jane’s UWS location. I wanted to brighten up for winter, and Ritchie’s masterful balayage was exactly what I wanted. Bianca gave me a great blow-​out too, and another friendly member of the staff kept my wine glass full throughout the primping process.
I am 100% a Fox & Jane convert! The salon is small and intimate and everyone there exuded friendliness and cheer — which is imperative in any service-​based industry. And, I found it pretty affordable compared with where I had previously gotten my hair colored. I look forward to coming back for a gloss and cut in a few months.

This review is for Jackie who did an Ahhhhh-​mazing job on my cut and color.
I have needed to find a new stylist here in nyc, and after, no joke, much research I found Fox & Jane and I started looking up the individual stylists. When I saw Jackie’s work with blondes, I knew I wanted her to do mine.
She absolutely exceeded my expectations. She did balayage and did such a beautiful job (see below pic). Plus, I had thought the receptionist when I called to book the appointment had put down that I wanted to schedule a cut, and I think there was just some kind of miscommunication because I didn’t have a cut scheduled. Jackie managed to find the time to do this for me and not once did I feel like she was rushing through anything.
I booked my next appointment on the spot with her, and I’m really excited for the plan we have for my hair. I can’t speak highly enough of her! Thank you Jackie!

During the week when the pope visited I was craving a trim or hair cut. I don’t even know.
I just wanted to cut my hair. I got off work around 5 and was super tired. Every salon I called or walked to on my way up the upper west side was booked full or not able to take me.
However Fox and Jane was able to squeeze me in for the quick cut I wanted 30 min before their closing time!
My stylist was Celine and she was super sweet. It was my first time getting my hair done in New York and I was extremely nervous. She somehow made me at ease and also gave me exactly what I wanted. She thinned out, textured, and shortened my hair without making a dramatic change which was exactly what I wanted but too tired to figure it out.
It was nice of her to point out that even though I said I wanted to remove 2 to 3 inches, the length that I pointed out to her where I wanted it cut was more like 6 inchs. (yikes! I have no idea what I’m talking about)
But it was funny and had a good time.
I paid full price for my cut without a blowout but totally worth it for the time and service.
They also have a service menue on their website and as a handout at their locations which is super nice because you can anticipate the price.
I would definitely come back again! Next time I will prob dye my hair or do something more fancy ;)

It’s really disappointing that I have to write this review since my stylist was a really kind person and I liked him a lot (as a person), but I spent $ 200 on a balayage and my hair barely looks any different. The style came out completely different from the images I showed him. I’ve been to Fox and Jane in the LES location twice — once was great with Bianca and the second time — with a different stylist — was also completely underwhelming, but at least they offered to give me a touch up. I’ve definitely just had enough with Fox and Jane now since their stylists are obviously very hit or miss. I couldn’t get an appointment with the stylist I wanted, so I thought to just give it a try in another location, after all Fox and Jane is supposed to be well-​known for their balayage techniques and they were kind about the free touch up. However, after this third try, I know to never come back here again. Yes, I could just go to Bianca, but I could never get an appointment with her again, and also seems strange that she’s the only one that’s good.
My hair is now this shade of orange-​brown that I hate and I can’t see any of the blonde highlights that should be in my hair. I tried to give it a day to see it in the daylight, but basically I wasted $ 200 since it’s not noticeable that I’ve done anything. Sure, it’s lighter, but this is not what $ 200 (not including the tip) should look like. Especially when I gave clear pictures.
Really disappointed especially after giving this place a few tries already! They get one star since the stylist are nice people.

Devin Rahal is a god among mortals.
He whipped my thick, barely-​grazing-​shoulder-​length, straight as an arrow hair into a beautifully disheveled updo in under an hour.
First he backcombed the shit out of it. I looked like a crack-​addled mountain vagrant, for about 30 seconds. Things did not look promising. (I kid, I trusted him completely).
I looked down at my phone to attend to some serious matters – cute cat pictures on instagram – and by the time I came up for air it was all over.
All it took was about 57 bobby pins, some Starbucks and a magician (that’s Devin). Oh and he also opened up shop early to accommodate me. I haven’t gotten my official photos yet, but here’s one stolen from a friend’s phone so you can witness the miracle for yourself. (Bear in mind — BARELY grazing shoulder length hair).
Devin, you smell nice, you’re cute as a button, you tell funny stories, and you’re a lifesaver. I honestly don’t know what more you could ask from a hair stylist.

Another amazing experience at Fox and Jane. I’ve already gotten a full head of balayage in April (2.5 months ago) and now came in for a half head. Jackie took care of me and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I highly recommend Fox and Jane for a completely satisfying experience.
PS– I also witnessed Chi work his magic and he is as talented as the reviews make him out to be.
