Fashion Design Books

Sold a product that didn’t work and wouldn’t accept a return stating that it was used. I explained that yes I had to use the item to find out that it didn’t work. Obviously.
The manager then said that I could exchange the product. Then he said you’re not scaring me by saying you will go elsewhere. First of all not professional. Second of all you have to earn people’s business. Everyone has the right to go shop wherever they choose. He then reneged and said that he wouldn’t offer an exchange either.
I choose to shop somewhere that stands by their products, has good customer service, and doesn’t go back on an offer or their word. They lost my business.

I’m a student at FIT, and this is right across from the school. It’s very convenient. They always have what I need. Although they don’t have EVERYTHING, they have almost anything you could need or want that is fashion related. Great selection of fashion magazines (not only US ones). Great prices. They also offer a great rewards card to help you save even more.
They have a great selection of art and sewing supplies. Whenever I need anything of the sort, I check here first, and they almost always have it. I think FIT informs the store of any supplies students may need, because I was able to find my pocket scriber here as well. I go here again and again. Great place!

This place is a great spot to get craft/​art supplies for school projects!

They always make you check in your purse during the first couple weeks of the semester so people dont shoplift books and supplies. I love this place such a great variety of stuff and much cheaper then the FIT bookstore — they also pay more for book buyback

Top notch customer service with an impressive inventory with an even more impressive price tag attached. Very reasonable prices. Too bad about not being open on the weekends, though. That may be my only qualm with a business I am more than happy to frequent. No complaints. I was able to buy supplies for three different art projects (See: EMBROIDERY SUPPLIES; FLOSS, HOOPS, NEEDLES, WATER SOLUBLE MARKERS OR «MAGIC DISAPPEARING» MARKERS, RUBBER CEMENT, GRAPHITE TRANSFER PAPER, CRAFT/​SEWING ACCESSORIES, ECT.) without breaking the bank. Do your research. Especially if you’re into embroidery projects! Don’t get ripped off at places like City Quilters. You can find the same products at a much more affordable price.
I also feel obligated to mention that in a rush while on messenger duty, I was able to find all of my products quite quickly and anything that wasn’t immediately in sight to me the consistently friendly and eager to assist staff members helped me find in a time conscious manner. Would definitely not describe this shop as disorganized or chaotic.
I did not personally have to check my bag but even if I did, y’all need to get over it. That’s part of running a small business. Hence why you don’t have to check your bag at a Bloomingdale’s. Corporate companies have salaried security dudes, intricate security systems and most notable– business models that acknowledge and account for shoplifting before it’s even happened. Small businesses often cannot afford all of that and especially cannot afford to let their merchandise get snuck into the purses of entitled Fashion Institute freshmen. Don’t take company policies so personally. Fashion Design Books rules.

Working on a large scale embroidery project, I needed more thread. And fast. And being from a bit further downtown, I always dread going up to the Fashion District. Cue Fashion Design Books. They stock a damn good amount of sewing and art supplies — much more than their store name suggests. The store is well lit and has a good variety of items. However, I did find it a little disorganized, chaotic, and unfriendly. If you know what you want, get in and get out. Otherwise, I wouldn’t hang around too long.
PS: I didn’t have to check my bag. Maybe they changed that recently?

This place is lacking customer service! The cashiers are quite inattentive, rude, and generally unpleasant. I also find it annoying to have to check your bags upon entering the store — it takes more time to check and receive your bags than it does to buy what you need.
Their only saving grace is that they offer lower prices than the FIT bookstore.

what bothers me is that they dont have student discount. the counterperson claimed that «the items are heavily discounted» uh — yeah?! really?
i avoid this place whenever i can.

It has good supply of art supplies and sewing.
Art and fashion students will most probably find school supplies that they need.
Unfortunately, their customer service is something that they can improve on. Some of them (usually the guys) are really helpful and friendly, however the girls seem to be permanently on PMS mood.
Exchange and return policy is also rather strict compared to other bookstores that sell textbooks, so you might want to be extremely positive before you purchase any book here.

This store is a great go-​to stop for basic arts and crafts supplies, especially since (DUH) it’s right across the street from FIT. They have a little bit of everything at reasonable prices — beads, sewing supplies, yarn, paper, ribbon, fabric, portfolios, pens and markers, etc. It also apparently serves as a textbook store for FIT. Their selection and variety of thread beat out that of M&J Trimming by a lot — different brands, spool sizes, colors, and most importantly, I finally found the metallic thread I was looking for. Woohoo! (3.5 stars)

Its fairly well stocked with various art supplies, although it doesn’t have largest selection to chose from, it has enough to make it a quick-​stop to any forgetful art student who needs supplies in a hurry.
Its quite pricey, considering that unlike the Utrecht Art Supply store on 23^rd St, it doesn’t really offer any student discount. Also its selections of paints is quite slim, so I wouldn’t suggest relying on this store for your painting needs. As far as the «fabric» section of the store, I can’t really say since I never really venture there (perhaps someone else can enlighten us if its worth while).
As far as books go, do yourself a favor and buy all your books through amazon. Chances are they are still going to be relatively expensive even if you are buying used. If you’re a student, I would avoid buying books here, not that they are of inferior quality, but for the sake of saving money on books you might not even use. I’ve spent $ 65 on a book I didn’t even open throughout an entire semester and passed my class with relative ease. Chances are you’d probably find the same book for $ 25 on amazon (for the most part). However, if you are in a pinch and need the book an hour or 15 minutes from your next class, you can always buy your books there, not to mention you can sell the books back to the store (granted, it is at a much lower price then when you bought it, new or used).
Overall a solid quick-​stop for general art supply needs, books are alright but expensive, and some-​what pricey for certain items.

I wandered in here after a stop at Café 27, and I must say — I was quite surprised to see such an awesome art store in the area. Sure, it’s the Fashion District and FIT-​land, but despite that, there really aren’t too many GOOD art supply stores in that zipcode. (By «good», I primarily mean a place that’s reliable, and of course affordable for the starving art student.) This place is quite nice though. Well-​lighted, well-​staffed, and fun to browse.
They don’t offer a huge selection, since a majority of the store is indeed books, but they do have a great variety of the more popular and used/​requested supplies at very reasonable prices for the Manhattan area. I was walking through the aisles, mentally price-​matching stuff, and a few items really caught me off guard at how cheap they were. Like artist models for instance, which can go for around $ 30 for a small sized model, are about $ 12 – 13 here. Spray paints and primers are around $ 8 a pop, and pens/​pencils/​markers are some of the cheapest I’ve seen, some going for 99-​cents a pop. Granted, you’ll probably find better prices if you hunt around a bit elsewhere, but in a pinch this place is probably your best bet for quality and affordability.

This place has the cheapest Chartpak AD markers by far!!!
I’ve bought plenty of my Art supplies from here, ones which Utrecht were out of stock and one which were far too expensive.
And its located right where the competition is — FIT. Hee.
