The food was bland and way way way overpriced. Probably the worst Mexican I’ve ever had. I had a plate of beans, rice, and chicken and my boyfriend had the tacos. Both sucked. Margarita tasted like sweet cheap tequila and it was $ 12. I’m a real no.

Overpriced food and not much service. The music is not too bad, but overall, a very unsatisfying experience for us.

Somewhat slow introductory service after we were seated and it took a bit of time to get our drinks out, but after that service was good and the food was DELIGHTFUL. Very flavorful and fresh enough… shrimp tacos and barbacoa lamp tacos were delicious. Oddly – and annoyingly, as we weren’t told this till we were already seated outside – the happy hour drinks are ONLY available inside. That’s maybe one of the dumbest policies I’ve ever heard, but that’s the difference between a 3-star and 4-star review.

The food here is really good, and the drinks are strong, which is always a plus in my book. The only major complaint that I have is that this restaurant uses PLASTIC plates, cups, and bowls! Like are you serious?! I was pretty disgusted by the plate my sandwich came on because 1) it was plastic(don’t even get me started on how I feel about plastic), and 2) there were a ton of scratch marks on the plate.

Skip! My friend and I went for lunch and neither of us liked our food and the margaritas are WAY too strong. The plates are food was served on were like the paper plates you would use for a picnic. Service was also very spotty. We sat outside and were served after a table that was sat after us.

Tacos were ok as was the margarita. I was expecting amazing margaritas since this is a Mexican place, but they were the bad kind of margaritas you had in college. Should’ve upgraded to a better tequila. Yuck. They even brought out the wrong margarita for my friend, who ordered the frozen mango, they gave her a regular by mistake and when she noticed and said something, there was no apology, but they did bring her another one — the right one this time. I had the steak tacos. Again, it didn’t wow me. It had a ton of chopped up onions in it, which I had to take out. The creamy guacamole was great. At least the prices weren’t too bad. No reservations and seating is a mess. Mostly communal tables inside except for a few two-tops. Outdoor tables are hard to get, we unfortunately had to sit at the one high-top table outside, which was communal, so we had to share with other people. Usually busy here and fun, casual vibe.

I loved it!!! My boyfriend took me here on a Tuesday evening, it was awesome. The service, the food, the atmosphere, the drinks everything was spectacular! And wow they’re so fast! We went for happy hour and the drinks were awesome. I really enjoyed everything in this cute little spot! I love authentic Mexican food. It was perfect, will come here again.

This just replaced my favorite Mexican restaurant that recently closed on the UWS. The bar scene is lively and fun. The margaritas will end your night quickly if you are not careful. They are delicious. We just had some chips and salsa at the bar, but the other food looked good. Will definitely return!

Small little mexican food place on the UWS. reasonably priced, good guacamole, long wait unless you are lucky. Food: The sizes of the food are not too large but enough to satiate with sharing a plate of guacomole and order a meal each. The guac is very good and I guess they make it in very large batches becuase it was on our table within 2 minutes of ordering it. The tacos were pretty filling and tasty. The price is right. The Canitas sandwhich was good but the pressed bread was not really a huge plus. Service: Quick, a bit rushed but this place has a line outside so not anything to complain about. Price: Very well priced for the UWS. Under $ 10 for a meal that is actually filing. Not bad at all. Décor: Eh, not much thought was put into it here and nothing even memorable except for how crowded it is. Notables: Nothing to note.

Stopped in for lunch while visiting my brother at school and had a great time. The guac was great but the margs were even better. It gets crowded during happy hour, so if you’re lucky enough to get a table outside, sit back and enjoy!

I had a wild mushroom burrito and some nachos with guacamole: simply delicious!!! I love the guacamole, it’s the best I’ve ever tried! I can’t give 5 stars, because I went there twice, and the first time service was perfect, but the second time the waiter was pretty rude and seemed annoyed to serve us. Furthermore, we wanted to tip, but then we realized that tips were already included!

Smallish, pleasant atmosphere if a bit noisy at happy hour. Good variety of Mexican specialties. Excellent guacamole. Good prices. Contrary to another reviewer, I left full, even without dessert or drinks.

The food was good, the portion was fine and the tase OK. The beens I had the feeling they bought it at the super market :(effortless for a 12 dollars chilaquiles(tortilla and salsa) the tacos are 8 dollars for three I think the price is fine and they look very good. I felt the employees are not very happy working here even though they were nice and attentive maybe they should earn more money!!! I hope the owner to read me BTW!!! Maybe put some Mexican music? I liked the place and please come I recommend it!

Valentine’s day on a bitterly cold Sunday night. Didn’t have a reservation anywhere, but needed a warm, filling place after coming out of the local AMC theatre. El Mitote was surprisingly not crowded and filled with vday decorations. After securing a spot near the back with all the balloons — quickly ordered the Guacamole($ 10) to start and frozen margaritas($ 6 each). Guacamole is super creamy yet holds well on the chips. Tasty and not easy to stop once you get going. Also ordered the Pepito Torta($ 13) and a Scrambled Egg Burrito($ 9). Juicy meat in the torta that needed no extra hot sauce on perfectly toasted bread. Egg burrito had a nice kick with the jalapeño paste. Service here is extremely fast. We ordered each dish and it came out a few minutes after, without any of the food suffering in quality(maybe the chips could have been warm, but not much of a complaint). Loved the ambiance, the strong drinks, the good food, and convenient location. Will certainly be back.

Disclaimer: Happy Hour Review only. We’ve moved on from uptown, now we’re at my daughter’s favorite spot on the UWS. The hand-shaken ‘Ritas served in Ball jars were delicious, generous, and strong. We did get guacamole and chips. The guacamole was chunky and creamy, the chips fresh and warm. The personable manager, Rick, and his staff were great and«let us be us».(Did I mention the margaritas were strong?). We left very satisfied, and the tab was VERY reasonable, especially for the UWS. I don’t know when I’ll return to this ‘hood, but if I do, I’ll definitely patronize El Mitote again, and give it a food review next time.

We need our orders quickly, we told our waitress. We have a movie to catch. Some places this would elicit an eye roll or perhaps a verbal lashing. Not at El Mitote. It meant we made it through a round of frozen margaritas, room temperature chips and chunky guacamole and thick, tortas dipped in chili sauce in around 20 minutes. And while we didn’t quite make to the memorial showing of «The Man Who Fell To Earth» on time, it wasn’t the fault of the restaurant. About those tortas. They are really were much better than you would expect in a neighborhood known for Rosa Mexicano and«pre-opera» meals. There was plenty of stringy cheese and brown beans mixed with protein and that spicy red salsa. If we had a few more minutes, I’m sure I would have lingered a bit more through the meal, and had a second margarita. Thankfully they allow you to eat at your own pace here.

I’ve been here twice– once with my bff and once with my bf. The first time I came was a hot summer Saturday after a walk in Central Park. The restaurant was packed with people, but we didn’t have to wait too long before getting seated(a huge crowd came after us, so good thing we came when we did). I had the beer/Tabasco drink which I then decided wasn’t my thing. Second time I came was after a movie at AMC Lincoln Square. The atmosphere was way different– candle-lit tables, very intimate. Great for a date! The food is on point. I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered here! Tacos, burritos, open-faced sandwiches… Watch out for the margaritas. They are STRONG!

Just what I want in a Mexican cantina. Reasonable prices, fresh ingredients, good tasting stuff. Had great shrimp tacos. Lots of little shrimps. Portions are not huge, so you should think about ordering two items at least. Margaritas are SUPERB. Unlike many spots, they have a generous shot of tequila. Bring a designated driver! You’ll want more than one.

Good margaritas served up in a mason jar. Nice chunky and creamy guacamole. Fun little Mexican spot on the UWS. Worth a visit to grab a bite and a drink during happy hour, or before hitting a movie at the AMC Lincoln Square a few blocks over if nearby. Service was hit and miss as they messed up our order and one in our party had to wait a long time before getting her food. We still had enough time to make the flick though. The tortas and tacos fell a bit short though in my opinion. Torta was on the smaller side and kind of flavorless. Tacos were passable. Three to an order and for the price could have been a bit more filled up with chicken. Just OK Mexican food here but there is much better to be had in the city. It’s one of those spots to hit if you’re a local and just want some quickie Mexican after work or before heading out to the bars.
