Description

Specialties

Earth Yoga is a place where students can begin or continue their practice of hot yoga under the guidance of some of New York’s most qualified instructors. The environment here is calm and nurturing, We believe this ethos will become clear when practitioners see the passion and dedication of our instructors and their desire to share knowledge and encourage self-awareness.

Earth Yoga is a name we liked from the start. It evokes the idea of the earth being our universal home — a place we should regard as sacred, yet as a place of rest and growth. The earth is the source of life, knowledge, harmony and positive energy. We hope Earth Yoga becomes a haven where you come to feed your senses, relax the mind and body, and nourish the soul.

History

Established in 2009.

In August 2009 we opened Earth YogaNYC and had a fantastic 2 years on E 63rd street building our growing community. Then in December 2011, our doors reopened at our new location at 328 E 61st St. Newly renovated with a calm nurturing energy we love our new space. A demand for yoga for the whole family encouraged us to introduce Kids Yoga and Prenatal yoga in January 2013 and we haven’t looked back. We’re pleased that our inclusive «no yogi left behind» policy has paid off. Yoga means different things to different people but we believe it’s about embracing your version of it in a non-judgmental and supportive classroom. Our teachers teach to all levels and always give options and modifications which suit the student’s mood, any injuries being nursed, and the level of practice. Yoga is non-competitive and should be fun!

Yoga came to us through our other sports. For Richard yoga was about the breath and stretching. A Shotokan karate master with an international reputation, he sees yoga as a way to increase suppleness and to induce a sense of calm in an otherwise heavy duty teaching régime of non-stop classes. I was introduced to yoga as a fanatical polo player over ten years ago in rural France. One of my first teachers was helping to rehabilitate injured professional jockeys, and after many serious falls myself I was shown yoga’s curative powers. Where no physiotherapy and conventional medicine helped, yoga did. Today I still give thanks for the ability to do downward dog, given the neck and back injuries I sustained. Our hope for the studio is simple. To bring yoga to more people and to show everyone the uplifting possibilities and everything (inner and outer) — which can flow from the positive feelings brought to us by a regular practice. Btw, our EY teachers are passionate about sharing their art
