Dick’s Hardware

I really like the owner and his daughter and their dog, they make for a very relaxed and welcoming environment. Plus they are always very nice to me AND my dog whenever we come in. The store is deceptively large, with an upstairs and a downstairs, and many shelves which are packed from top to bottom. They’ve always had everything I need, at reasonable prices, and they never make me feel awkward or rushed or judged.

I generally like to visit neighborhood, mom & pop owned stores over the big chains. My last visit to Dick’s Hardware proved exactly why. The owner helped me replace a previously purchased gallon of paint which seemed to have gone bad between purchase and first use (about 24 hours). The very nice paint specialist recreated the same color for me, which had to be specially made. I truly appreciated their customer care, which made the whole process quick and easy. Will continue to visit the store and recommend to others!

What a great place to live nearby. Saved my butt aplenty.
From precautionary bedbug advice and spray (saving my apartment, probably neighbors too), to pot plant help, to interior fixes. They know it all. Highly recommend anybody with questions to go in.

Helpful, friendly, and good prices.

As mentioned in other reviews, the staff is incredibly rude. They behave as if they’re doing you a favor by answering your question or ringing you up. Also, the minimum credit card purchase is $ 10. It’s the 21^st Century, and no one carries cash anymore; I’m not going to buy $ 10 worth of packing tape just so I can use my Visa to buy a $ 2.50 picture hanger. There’s a reason people go to the Chelsea Home Depot at 23^rd and 6^th — it’s cheaper, the people are friendlier, and there’s no credit card minimum.

Dick’s is pretty unprofessional. I’m starting my review with that because when I walked in, one of the employees (I’m guessing she’s the wife of the owner) was busy stocking shelves and when I said «excuse me» she started muttering about having «no fucking help». Now, I have quite the mouth on me but I would not even say that within earshot of a paying customer.
She made my keys pretty quick while her husband started to ring me up. They have a sign taped to the counter that says there is a $ 10 minimum for c/​c purchases. My total was a little under $ 6.00. So I tossed in a pack of batteries to bring up my total so I could use my company card. So why am I giving this place 3 stars and not 1 or 2? They appeared to have a decent selection of hardware-​related items and since the financial district isn’t exactly known for hardware stores, this is helpful. They also have a cute dog (think bodega cat) that will follow you to the door, almost like he’s going to walk you out.

I came here looking for a very specific item which the owner (or employee) was able to find within seconds. I was a few cents short of the total and he let me make the purchase anyway. I appreciated him not giving me a hard time over that.
Good location and they seem to have a wide variety of products for what seems like a small space from the outside.

This hardware store had the rare light bulbs I was looking for. I tried three other stores before I found what I needed at Dick’s. The owner helped me out personally, even when it didn’t benefit him financially. Plus, a store with this large of an inventory, hidden in the Financial District– it’s really a gem.

Never in my life have I received such horrible customer service.
Upon arriving, I went to ask someone where I could locate certain items. He pointed in the general vicinity of the items and told me I had passed them on my way into the store. At the checkout, my total came to $ 5.97. I paid with a $ 20 bill. Now, those of you playing at home know I should receive $ 14 back. The clerk, however, did not agree. While he was holding a conversation on the phone the entire time, he tried to convince me that I paid using a $ 10 bill. Work’s petty cash had no $ 10 bills today, so I had to take a $ 20. He kept insisting I was holding 2 $ 10 bills and I paid with one and kept the other. Well, it was now time to show him my pockets and wallet apparently. When he could see I clearly had no $ 10 bills on me, he still wasn’t satisfied. While I did receive my $ 10 owed to me (or my employer rather), he kept muttering as I had exited the building.
I will NEVER come to this establishment again. Not even with a $ 10 bill. I suggest you avoid it as well.

I am continually amazed at the volume of stuff available at Dick’s hardware — they always have what I need. The owner is helpful and can always point you to what you need. Prices are considerably higher than home depot, but given that Dick’s Hardware is around the corner from my apartment, unless I need an expensive item, I go to Dick’s Hardware.

Dick’s is not your typical hardware store. Yes they sell light bulbs and paint but they also really understand how things work, have great advice and really care about their customers and what they are building! For the last year and a half while building a high performance computer heating prototype, I have many days walked an extra 6 blocks past 3 other hardware stores in Manhattan just to shop with Shaul, Daniella and the family.
Shaul and his team have helped us find or build so many of the little and big parts and pieces we needed for the first prototype that I consider them part of the development team. This is the best hardware store in lower Manhattan and is staffed by the most engaged and community involved team of hardware professionals you will find in the city. If you have the good sense to shop with Daniella, Shaul and the team at Dick’s, you will not be disappointed. If you have the better sense to actually talk to them about what you are doing and interact with them as a member of the community… you will never shop at another hardware store in the Financial District.

I literally have never met a more rude person in my entire life than the guy working at the counter. When I walked in and said «Hi» to him, he didn’t even look up at me. I waited for few moments to ask him if they made key copies. He was giggling at his cellphone, slowly moving towards to counter. Didn’t look at me once. After another minute, he finally looked at me and said «yes». He then took the keys from me, put them down on the counter, grabbed a bowl of soup and started eating. At that point, I was more curious than annoyed. He complained about how hot the soup was (eh?), then how dry his mouth was (ok?), then drank some water, then finally took my keys. It took him about 5 minutes to make 4 keys (honestly, longest time I’ve seen anybody do that ever) and he charged me $ 12 for 4 keys (I mean, seriously?). Bottom line, in case you’re looking for a clown who is probably tripping on some heavy drugs, do not come here.

the customer service is very decent. and i was able to find the $ 7 lightbulb that my apartment would have changed me for if i didn’t come out of pocket. i visited other stores… before i found it here.
five stars because the moment i entered the store, someone wanted to assist me. i love that. i’m a natural damsel.

Just moved to the area and I am super thankful to have this right across from my apartment. I do a lot of crafting and I found that their prices are pretty reasonable and they have everything you could ever really need. I even went to a few Home Depots looking for a specific spray paint but had no luck. I then called Dick’s and they had numerous options for me. Oh, and it definitely helps that they’re super dog friendly!

All I can say is if you want a better experience with friendlier service and cheaper prices, go to the hardware store on Fulton St.
The owner here is a complete dbag. The name of this hardware store really suits itself. If you like a store that doesn’t stand behind its products, ignorant, and an exchange/​refund policy that is a joke then this is your place. A little piece of advice to this owner… I know most of your customers are young adults who you probably think live off mommy’s and daddy’s money, but that does not give you the OK to treat us like garbage. Even though this place is very close to my apt, I will go elsewhere.

Ok, so I decided to give this place another shot. Well, like a re-​run «Dog’s wife» is still a peach! I think the warm weather suits her well as a full figured woman! This lady pushes her customers out the door, not a care in the world if the store makes money. This fatty just wants to get back to her pulled pork sandwich stashed behind the register.

For review 800 I’m glad it’s something good. This place has everything, and It’s super close to me. I got a nice 1′ level for under $ 5. I have been here a bunch of times and they always seem to have exactly what I need.
The best thing you van do is support local businesses like this one.

Stores like this make me reevaluate my life. You just get so used to walking into Home Depot and hunting for what you are looking for, waiting on line forever, over paying, and then being eyed suspiciously while leaving the store by security.
Imagine instead walking through the front door of a hardware store and being pounced on by an earnest young man who asks what you are looking for and then takes you to where it is. This store is huge, encompassing two levels. The item I was looking for was on the lower level, and I was impressed to find a second young man waiting downstairs to help anyone coming from above, but of course I didn’t need his help because the first clerk was right behind me.
At Dick’s, size matters, and Dick’s Hardware is big in all the right ways!

Stay away. The owner is rude (a real dick, pun intended!), can’t be bothered to even acknowledge you when you walk into the store, doesn’t say a word even if you greet him and also seems to prefer that you do NOT ask him any questions.
