Just had my second haircut with Susan at the Broome Street location. I live in Westchester and had my first haircut in March, while in the city on business. Susan is not only very talented, she is also a total professional. Susan has helped me grown out a «bad haircut» and has restored my faith in Devachan Salon. A super talented cutter is worth her weight in gold for us curly girls! Susan is worth the trip…

Love this spot! Cozier and more laid back than the Soho location. Taylor listened to my goals/​issues, gave me a great cut, and useful instructions for my hair’s current situation. I highly recommend this place for you, the curly-​headed human who’s looking for a change!

Anyone know where the stylist Mary Ann is working? She has left Devachan and I am devastated.

I was extremely hopeful that this salon could give me a great haircut, since I have naturally curly hair and like wearing my hair without product. I went for a consultation and booked a cut and style at the salon in the Upper West Side. The atmosphere of the salon was very nice: you get a robe and a beverage when you walk in and the stylists are very attentive. They even do the shampoo and condition! What I didn’t like was that almost the entire cut was
When I left my cut/​style the first time, I knew I wasn’t in love with it, but I figured I’d give it a few days to settle in and washed a few times using my own products. I usually only leave in a little conditioner to style. This cut was heavy on top, and it didn’t give me layers like I had hoped. I had ended up with two layers: one very thin under layer and one thick top layer on the top half of my head. My hair felt thin and weak and the style was not structured to best suit my curls.
After two weeks, I scheduled an adjustment with a different stylist, Tatyana, who did a fantastic job, and I walked out happier than the first time! She didn’t push the Deva products, which really appreciated. She gave me all the layers I wanted, kept the length enough to pull back for activity, and my hair feels more balanced and full. I would definitely recommend her and will be going back!

I first went to Devachan in January 2015 (the old SoHo location), and the experience complete transformed my life, I will never go anywhere else!
I’ve been struggling in vain for decades to find the right way to take care of my mixed-​race curly hair, and the right products. My hair was damaged and all different textures and lengths from years of relaxers, blow drying, flat ironing, sun damage and all sorts of torture. I’ve tried Wen, Miss Jessie’s, Carol’s Daughter, Ouidad… you name it, and nothing made a difference.
This was the 1^st time ever that I had a stylist cut my hair DRY, tailored to my curls… and it makes a world of difference. I also was given tips on taking care of my curls, including to only finger comb my hair (my stylist used only fingers, no tools touched my hair!) As soon as I got home I threw out all my old products and combs, and now only use Devacurl products! I did not take a blow dryer or flat iron to my hair for 10 months (longest stretch ever by far!) My hair is the healthiest, and longest it’s ever been. I receive non stop compliments including from strangers.
My return was delayed due to an injury, but finally went back this February. My stylist was Chris, and I believe the assistant’s name is Bernice– she gave me an absolutely amazing shampoo and treatment, in the most comfortable reclining chairs ever… I didn’t want to get up! Chris remarked how healthy my hair was, just needed to even out the length again. All the staff I interacted with were friendly and accommodating. And I did not have to wait at all. Once again a FANTABULOUS experience!
Sure it’s a little pricey, but what salon isn’t in NYC? And by far worth it considering between the salon cuts and Devacurl products, the money I save on products and the priceless value for finally having hair I love!
I will make sure to keep going back on a regular basis to maintain my health and keep my hair growing.
Devachan Salon is an absolute MUST for any one with curly hair, especially if you have been struggling like I was!

I usually only write positive reviews — I feel compelled to write a not so positive one as a warning for some potential people. Salon is great, people are wonderful. The problem is that Robert — who is nice, kind, sweet — cannot cut hair — or should not. He was pleasant, lovely, kind. Yet he truly butchered my hair — he cut a bi-​level cut to take the weight off, yet left it so uneven. I mean chopped. So uneven that I showed 3 other hair stylists and they were all appalled that I would be allowed to leave this way and all 3 believe I should get my money back. The cut was unacceptable — especially at $ 175.
What I did learn was how to style my curly hair, which was great — yet not worth $ 175.
Fortunately for me, I ran into a great person who does hair who asked to fix it for me, for free — she felt so badly about the cut. She also gained a new client.
The warning is: they can teach you how to style your curly hair, for sure. Yet be careful on the cut — they don’t even out your hair, since they expect you won’t EVER straighten it — and I guess they aren’t concerned with what is looks like straight.
I, for one, know a good cut can work straight, wavy, curly…

Robert cut my hair and it was the best hair cut I have ever had!!! Totally worth the money. Finally someone who understands curly hair and listened to me about the way that I like for my hair to look. My entire experience (cut, color and washing) was extremely positive. I highly recommend!

Awful attitude of stylist. She complained about me and was rude and short tempered.
Never was she willing to assume responsibility for a bad haircut.

COLOR REVIEW: I got color with Nicole. I went in with pictures of what I wanted and she said my hair was too thin and she was afraid the honey blonde highlights I wanted might cause damage. She asked if I was open to something warmer. I didn’t know warmer meant ONE SHADE LIGHTER than my dark brown hair. You can’t see the highlights. She also added «highlights» at the very front of my hair where my hair is thinning so it looks like 2 tiny bald spots. I know she noticed this because when washing my hair she kept rubbing that spot as if to see if I had hair in that spot. I debated so much before putting a review up but when you pay $ 260 for cut and color and your color sucks its kind of upsetting. I didn’t say anything when I left because I thought the color might lighten up when I washed but it hasn’t. I love salon and have every intention of seeing Christopher again for a cut and recommending him. For color? I think I’ll take my chances elsewhere.
CUT REVIEW: Christopher makes me happy! I recommend him because he listens to what you want and how you style your hair and the results show it! I will keep going back to him again and again.

TL;DR: Avoid Julie at all costs. If you have texture 3a and thicker, this isn’t for you. As for Julie, you pay a senior stylist price to spend the entire time with her assistant.
I was talking to my two year old cousin last night about my plans for today. She asked if I could hang out with her. I said, «No, I need to get a haircut.» She responded, «I can cut your hair.» She might as well have…
I should have known when I called on Saturday morning for an appointment either Saturday or Sunday and Julie was wide open, that there was a reason for it. I arrived at 1:30 for a 1:45 appointment and was brought over promptly.
First, I sat down, and the woman looks at me and goes, «What is that? Have you seen this?» (I’ve obviously seen the hair on my head since I wear it every day of my life.) Then, she automatically says, «I can tell you don’t know exactly what’s going on back here. I can just sense that you don’t know how big of a problem the back of your head is.» Um, excuse me?
She then asks me what I want and I tell her that I would like something minimalist, nothing drastic, because I like my hair at its current length. Behold: tug of war. She says, «Well, how am I supposed to do that? That’s just not possible,» as she continues looking at my hair. The assistant approaches, a phenomenal junior stylist, whose bedside manner is much more appropriate than Julie’s. Before this great woman is able to take me back to get my hair washed, etc., Julie digs herself an even deeper grave and says, «I can tell you don’t ever condition. You should be conditioning at least twice a week.» Then she continues, «Don’t just use a dollop like everyone says. Be generous with the conditioner.»
Uh, what? Instead of flipping out at her, I kept my cool, because… well…she would have the scissors that would eventually give me a terrible haircut anyway, but I wanted to keep my hair while I could. (For those of you wondering whether I use conditioner, I obviously use conditioner. I use Kinky Curly Knot Today and pretty much waste the whole damn bottle on my head. I digress, though.) Julie, as if she was doing me the world’s biggest favor, goes, «You should really get a deep condition.» I just nodded and said, «I know,» and she responded,“Well, it starts at $ 75 but I’ll just keep it that way for you since you need it that badly.”
«Oh my God,» she continues, «You don’t detangle.» Okay, whatever. Keep thinking you know more about me than I do, you jerk.
«What products do you use?,» she asked. When I told her she said, «Product is everything. The Deva products are all good for your hair and will give you the hydration that you so desperately need.»
Could you throw me any more shade? Not even her British accent could mask her New York attitude.
The junior stylist, a nice young lady from Trinidad (she told me she moved here five years ago), washed my hair and detangled it. This woman asked, politely, «Do you use a comb in your hair?» and I said, «No, I only ever finger comb.»
I was then put under the dryer for what felt like a lifetime. The junior stylist continued to put product in my hair after I came out. We did the reverse because Julie was so appalled by the state of my hair that she decided to mess up my visit for good. The junior stylist put some gel in my hair and said, «You like gels in your hair, right?» to which I responded, «No, I don’t use gels. I use creams.» She looks at me and goes, «Oh well, let me wash this out then. Sorry.» She was kind, polite, apologetic, and generally a real pleasure to deal with. I was already angry because of Julie, but this woman knew what to do/​say to pick up the pieces.
She continued to style my hair for a bit and then I eventually was moved back to the dryer. During all of this time, Julie cut two to three other people. It was probably 4:00 before she touched my hair. Really. I wish I was lying. I paid premium price for a subpar experience.
Julie came to me and said, «Oh my god, what beautiful curls. I don’t cut hair wet, but I don’t want you to have to sit under there any longer. Let’s just try to dry this out a bit more.» She continued. Finally, she asks me to stand up so she can cut my hair. I politely oblige. She’s grinning ear to ear, obviously pleased with her own work. I could not see it since I have bad vision and was sans glasses.
We chatted a little bit, and I find out that she is a pretty high end stylist in the entertainment industry. Cool stuff, but I’m not an entertainer and I don’t have millions of dollars, so I can’t just pay someone else to fix what was an atrocious mistake.
«I’m going to do as you said and cut minimally,» she reiterates, obviously nervous. Snip, snip, snip, snip. «You’re going to love it,» she says.
I hate it.
I’m going to go see if my two year old cousin is still willing to cut it for me. (Now I feel bad that I refused to hang out with her when she could have clearly done a better job.

I have been a client of the downtown location for years. Due to a scheduling issue, I decided to try the uptown location. The haircutter did not listen to any of my requests and I walked out miserably unhappy. I decided to give him a second try. This time I told him exactly what I wanted, and i STILL walked out unhappy. Back downtown I went!!!

Mia, Mia, Mia. Fantastic. The new salon on 79^th is smaller than SoHo but I like the snugness of it. Very helpful staff. My hair has never looked better and the products are unmatched. If you have curly or wavy hair, run, don’t walk to the nearest location and have them do you up. You won’t ever regret it.

Didn’t get my curly hair cut for a year after I moved to NYC as a result of too many bad haircuts by stylists who don’t understand curly hair. A friend recommended devachan to me. i have been to their soho location (Hellig) once and then to the UWS location (Anna) once. Loved both my haircuts. And the BEST shampoo station I have ever experienced. Friendly stylists and staff members. Expensive but. Came out feeling like a million bucks so it was worth it.

In the past, I have walked out of hair salons convincing myself that I was happy with my haircut. I justified the frizz and lack of fabulous curls because my hair is thick, curly, and long.
But today, I actually walked out of Devachan feeling amazing and fabulous. No need to convince myself I was looking good— I felt it!
Chris and Julian were amazing. Explained every step and reason for what they were doing. They told me what products they recommended, but did not try to sell me anything (which ended up making me want to buy everything!). My hair looks gorgeous, and so much more manageable. The whole experience was wonderful, even down to the delicious complementary iced tea. Do yourself a favor and book an appointment!

I came here as a first time Devacurl customer with long curly hair about down to my waist, looking to get a bob instead. I had an appointment with Chris, one of their pricier and more experienced haircutters ($ 110, tip not included). I was taken right away and didn’t have to wait passed my appointment time.
The location is small but very clean and bright, with their signature green and white color scheme. I was promptly given a silk robe to wear for the duration of my appointment.
Chris politely found me and introduced himself to me. We spent at least 5 – 7 minutes talking about what I wanted. He was very polite and respectful and taught me a lot about the physics of curly hair and what it will look like when it’s cut. He advised that true curly bangs are hard to achieve, especially with a natural cowlick like mine — so we opted to have some shorter pieces fanned out to the side.
He cut my hair dry, and then I was referred to Ronnie to get my hair washed and styled. The shampoo (or shall I say «no-​poo») station is luxurious, with mellow lighting and sheer curtains for some privacy. Ronnie was also very nice. Both of them indulged my nervously chatty mood as I braced for my shortest haircut ever in 10 years. She used about 4 – 5 different products that smelled wonderful.
After that, she brought me back to the chair and put me under one of the large hairdryers with some styling clips in my hair. I was left alone for 10 minutes. She then finished off the drying with the handheld curl diffuser. By the time I was given back to Chris for some last minute touch ups, I was looking great.
I was out of there in 90 minutes. I like their anonymous tipping system, which took the pressure off. Nobody pushed any products on me, like I hoped not. I do wish they gave me some more pointers on how to manage my hair on a day-​to-​day basis. It would be great if this location had flyers for it or something.
The final pricetag: $ 114 with a 20% tip for Chris and a $ 10 tip for Ronnie — $ 144. Considering most people get one major haircut only once or twice a year, it’s not so bad.

I went to the Devachan salon last month for my birthday. I just turned 30– So it was time to become an adult and learn how to properly style the beautiful curls I was born with.
Little bit about me: I’m Dominican. I was born with very curly hair and I’ve been styling my curls all my life when it wasn’t straightened. My issue was that I never knew how to keep it looking at beautiful as it was as soon as I finished styling it– it always ended up looking more like a poodle instead of a beautiful natural hair style. My hair takes an extremely long time to grow out and is very dry so I needed some guidance in my life.
I had an appointment with Lois for a cut. I was super hesitant because I’ve been traumatized with hair cuts before, and I let her know this. She was very friendly and explained a lot of things to me about my hair before even touching it. She trimmed the main parts that needed trimming and kept my length. So far so good. She asked me about the brown «crown» I had in my hair. long story short: color job done wrong. She referred me to Elie, one of the colorists at the salon, and also my new BFF.
Elie is THE BOMB. Not only is she Dominican (we are practically cousins), she understood what I wanted and hooked it UP. She lightened my hair without touching my roots, she used Olaplex instead of bleach; just gave me beautiful natural looking highlights. I was hesitant coming into the salon, because I’m EXTREMELY particular with my hair, but Elie really made my entire experience well worth it. I left the salon with even more confidence than what I had walked in with. I learned how to style my hair at home (by emulating exactly what they did at the salon), and now I’m at a point where no one can say anything negative about my hair because yes; it looks THAT GOOD. :)

I’ve never had a curl cut before. Heck, I only started wearing my hair natural a couple of months again. But the haircut and style I got on Friday completely blew me away! Telma cut my hair, and she was a total sweetheart. She encouraged me to grow my hair out instead of keeping it on the short side. Ronni washed and styled my hair. I actually screamed when I finally saw myself in the mirror … the transformation in my curls was A-​MAZING! I couldn’t stop admiring how gorgeous my hair looked. Will definitely be coming back.

This is the new addition to the Devachan Salon brand. On the UWS!!! Woot woot for my folks that live further North. We no longer need to travel to Soho… not that I don’t enjoy the location… just a bit far.
My stylist Melanie comes to this location twice a week, hallelujah. This location is definitely more intimate than the one in Soho. Great customer service, very clean and professional atmosphere. I’ve been coming to Devachan for 3+ yrs after many years of being a member of another upper class curl salon. The Devachan method is definitely what my hair loves best. They definitely don’t harass you to buy their products. Although the Heaven in Hair is the business, lol.

So far, so good. I love my haircut. My hair was in bad shape before my appointment. My hair was previously matted up due to chlorine damage from the swimming pool. It was detangled the night before. My stylist did a great job with the cut, it really balanced out my hair and encouraged curl definition. The detangling process was lengthy, but I appreciated that, as my hair was a mess the night before– and though I had gotten the initial tangling out, of course there were still going to be some problem areas. I hadn’t cut my hair in a year and a half — I was very afraid of scissors because scissors do take away length. However, my hair actually looks longer because the cut helped balance things out as opposed to a mass of disorganized curls on top of my head. For reference, my hair is between chin and shoulder length, and pretty tightly curled (some describe as 3C). Bleached AND color treated. Jackie cut my hair and Ronni helped with the detangling and conditioning.
Update: a few days later I washed my hair using some of the Devacurl products and my hair was SO easy to detangled and looks great.

Attention 4B, and C girls– STEER CLEAR
Me: I have been natural for 6 years. I have really thick hair and it is long (breast length). I am a SOLID 4C. I have been turned away from hair salons or charged a ridiculous amount of money to do my doo. Devachan was the worst.
This was g-​d awful. By the time I left, I was in such a daze of disappointment, shock, denial, and confusion that I was still in the area two hours later. I am really proud of myself, I didn’t yell at anyone and I didn’t cry (but, i have eaten my weight since being there). I was (am still) beyond upset because I had to go home and do my hair myself, but I kept my composure. Really, i wanted to jump off of a hair building.
Why a 1? The positives: The shampoo person, Kendell was great, informative, and aware of my experience.
The negatives: I went to the salon prior to making an appointment to show them my hair and how thick it was. I was honest… «hey, I am a black girl with a lot of hair. It is really really really thick. And while I have grown to embrace it, i know a lot of people cannot. Please let me know if you can do it.» The response, «we see black girls. sure sure, no problem.» I informed them I could leave because I would be more comfortable doing it than being sent away with no hairstyle. There was a big problem. I will find a way to post a photo.
How long did it take to finger comb/​wash my hair at this salon? Two hours. Ladies, I need some sort of brush or comb. They need it. I have so much hair you could shave half and i wouldn’t notice. Basically, lead stylist Nadia/​Nia comes over and decides it is taking to long and cuts some steps. HORRIFIC. Towel dried. Rinsed out most of the conditioner. Stuffs me under the dryer. less than 15 minutes later, i am shoved out with MAYBE 10 SNIPS of hair cut. Tons of dead hair holding on to other strands. TONS OF CLUMPS ON THE ENDS.
I am physically ill thinking about the disaster I saw. Vida’s face was surprised and shocked. Here she was trying to talk about dying hair and advising me about waiting 6 months, but she was so distracted by the mess, she was spouting hydration, combing, styling, «the kitchen sink» techniques anything to make me feel better about the calamity. imagine washing your hair and walking out the door with product still on the perimeter. that was «the style». the was «the best» this 11 year veteran could do. Me too, if I took 15 minutes to dry someone’s hair.
WOW!!! No one knew if I should pay. Silence. I will say many workers there noticed that i was not serviced. I paid $ 120 for no poo, conditioners, and iced tea. I am returning tomorrow with photos and ALL OF THE DEAD HAIR that is trapped in here to get my money back. Oh and I called out of work to stay with this appointment. Omg, when I said, I work in the food service industry «what do you expect me to do with this hair’ she (cringe) pulled the thick hair barely back (because it doesn’t go into a ponytail like that…) and said… «well… a bandana?».
She was told, this is birthday hair. this is my life is changing hair. and i left with hide your head in a hood and hair i could not go to a dark movie theater with.
HORROR. You can be a wet mop all by yourself. you don’t need this salon to do so. I will go now… to do my hair.
