Definitions Private Training Gyms

I’ve tried several gyms since moving to the area, and Definitions is by far my favorite! If you care about being in shape and are willing to pay for a trainer, just go in and try it out, you’ll understand.
Plusses:
+trainers are all professional and know what they’re doing, but also chill. I’m in shape and have been lifting/​training for years, but I also see them with clients who are just getting into shape and even the elderly, and everyone seems satisfied
+super friendly staff outside the trainers. feels like a community
+because the gym is 100% personal training, it NEVER gets busy
+no bs fees! no monthly fee, no stupid long-​term contracts, free towel service, free locker, and they’ll wash your gym clothes for you. they get rid of distractions so you can focus on results
+equipment variety and quality is excellent. everything is kept in amazing condition, gym is spotless and organized (i.e. no meatheads tossing weights everywhere and then going «u mad bro?»)
Minusses:
–for some reason this gym doesn’t have certain functional equipment like boxes for jumping on and other simple stuff. no big deal, but I found that a bit odd
–if you want to use the gym to train on your own, you can only do cardio (need a session to use weights/​machines/​gym floor)
Tip: try to find one trainer you like (they’re all great! I was with Hunter) and stick with them for 90% of your workouts. If you switch trainers it’s hard for them to get to know your needs and what you’re working on that week.

A little late on this, but wanted to add my two cents and thank the staff and my trainer, Anthony Tarantino.
My experience at the gym was totally professional– I came in with some objectives– trying to get back in shape, improve my performance, and make sure that this was scheduled, so I don’t allow myself to slack. I had all of my objectives here met in a respectful and non-​too overbearing environment. I hope to come back and work with them this winter.
Anthony was exceptional– flexible in scheduling, but also very knowledgeable– pushed me just hard enough without destroying me…

Great experience. I recommend you give it a try. Pleasant staff (Thanks Allen) push you safely into shape.

I have been going to this gym for over 4 years now. The service has remained consistently excellent from the moment I started. Just from my own personal experience and seeing trainer/​client interaction on the floor, the dedication in each trainer is apparent. Workouts are completely individualized and really tailored my needs. The staff doesn’t push you further than you need to go. When I first started, I had never really exercised before in my life. Ryan started me off with easier exercises to help build my confidence and give me a positive gym experience. He also noticed my bad posture and has made great strides in helping me stand up straighter, which alleviated some minor back pain I had. Now, not only have I lost weight, but my self-​esteem has increased tremendously.
None of this would have been possible without the amazing Definitions facility. The equipment is all brand new and constantly updated. Every inch of the gym is spotless — from the gym itself, to the bathrooms and even the personal shower stalls. I could not be more happy with my experience at Definitions.

It really doesn’t get much better – brand new equipment, spotlessly clean, and right in Union Square. I’ve worked with a number of trainers here and they’ve all been pros, not your chain gym amateur. Right now I’m training with Anthony T. I recommend him because he’s always pushing my limits and keeping things interesting. It’s not cheap, but coming here makes me feel good physically and mentally, so it’s totally worth it.

I am coming up on year 4 of working with Alex Baron. It’s been great and he has helped me keep in shape. I would never push myself as hard as he pushes me. And it’s exactly what I need. The trainers are all very nice and professional. I have worked out once or twice with almost all of them. The facilities are super clean, which really matters to me. When you step into the larger chain gyms in NYC that are dusty, dirty and have broken equipment — it’s just not a place you want to spend a lot of time in.
When I see trainers working at other gyms, they are on their phones or chatting up the client or other trainers. That just doesn’t happen at Definitions. I get my butt kicked every session. Which is what I am paying them for.
Very glad I started working out here. I recommend it to all my friends. Whether you want to just keep in shape, lose weight, whatever. Great place for personal training.

Definitions is a great gym! Friendly and dedicated staff and trainers. Excellent space and machines. Been coming here for 2 years now and I can’t imagine working out anywhere else. Highly recommended.

i’ve just reached the 3 year mark of working out at Definitions and it’s changed my life (I know that sounds corny but it is true!). Mostly at the Union Square location and now split between there and the 58^th Street gym as my trainer moved locations. Good facilities but it is really all about the quality of the trainers (at least to me) and here my personal experience has been outstanding. i have mainly worked with Eric (who is absolutely awesome) but I also worked with a number of the other guys over the years and have never been disappointed. I’m stronger, fitter and capable of doing things that I couldn’t do 30 years ago! We’ve exceeded my wildest dreams. I originally signed up to loose weight and get fit and 120 pounds later, it’s amazing what I’ve been able to achieve with the support and encouragement of not only my trainer but everyone else at the gym — including other clients. As Eric recently noted, I’m at ‘home’ at Definitions. It’s not a place to be ‘seen’ so if that is what you want, go elsewhere. Definitions is all about working hard, reaching one’s fitness goals but having fun at the same time. They take fitness seriously with lots of on-​going training for the guys and always tailoring the programs to the individual that they are training. An amazing experience for me… so why don’t you give it a try. Call and you won’t be disappointed.

Terrible customer service. My brief experience here led me to believe they think they’re doing clients a favor by letting them train here. Trainers seem bored and disengaged; it became a game for me to catch them checking their phones when they thought clients weren’t looking. Absolutely not worth the money.

I purchased a pack of 40 sessions at the Union Square location but had surgery that prevented me from continuing after seven sessions. They supposedly have a policy of refunds for medical reasons and I was repeatedly promised my refund by Joe Baron, one of the owners, by e-​mail and phone when I called. He supposedly had the wrong credit card number but that was bull. I gave him all the right information on the phone and STILL have not received my $ 3000 (plus) after several more weeks of empty promises. DO NOT JOIN. A lawsuit is next.
