I didn’t need to read the reviews on Unilocal to feel that this place was — like that. We came here on a Amazon Local deal, always nice to have a deal and using it was smooth and easy. The energy in this place was so low and outdated, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Fairway have spoiled us. Even the local grocery stores like Food Emporium have it going more than D’agostino. I believe it’s who they cater to, which is the elderly in the area, I am sure everyone enjoys a bring and energetic experience, regardless of their age. As we first walked in we noticed a smell near the cheese area(I know cheese smells but this was something else), my companion described it as farts and halitosis, yum. The elderly customers in the store look like they are on their way out. I don’t have a problem with the clientele, it’s more what the store offers and how they lack any updates to their store. They do have Gluten Free sections, but some of items are higher priced than you would find elsewhere. Definitely recommend going a few blocks north to either Food Emporium, Whole Foods, Health Nuts, A Matter of Health and then Fairway. I won’t be returning.

One thing I do like about this supermarket is that it’s well organized enough that I can actually find things easily, but the selection isn’t great. Prices overall are too high, but if you watch the sale items you can get some good deals.

I only go here because it is the close to my apartment and because New York City is seriously lacking in quality supermarkets, so there is nothing better to go to. They’re all pretty much the same. Like the other reviewers, I agree that they do not have a wide selection of products, and prices are not competitive. In a lot of their aisles, they have wide columns blocking some items along the shelves, so they’re difficult to retrieve. The fresh produce selection is limited, and I often end up buying fruits from the stands on the street because they are way cheaper. Tropicana orange juice is always $ 5+ when it should only be $ 2.99. It rarely goes on sale, and even when it does, you have to make sure you have enough D’Ag points to get the discount otherwise you end up paying full price for one of them and only realize it after you check the receipt later. D’Ag has very few redeeming points; I can only think of one actually. Places like Food Emporium offer cases of beer, but they’re not refrigerated. D’Ag has both refrigerated and non-refrigerated cases at slightly lower prices. They also have different kinds like the simple Bud Light, Corona, etc. and then beers like Delirium. The cases of the canned Bud Light will go fast on a Friday; I learned the hard way and had to find a quick solution around Friday 8pm prior to having friends over. I’ve also tried their rotisserie chickens. They used to have an offer where if you had like 800 points or so, you could get a whole chicken for $ 3.99 or something cheap and reasonable. The best flavor is the Italian. I even had to wait a half hour for a fresh batch to be ready, and a line actually formed — everyone waiting wanted the Italian flavor. The employees who work here hate their lives. They are moody and never crack a smile. They don’t accept manufacturer’s coupons, which is such a pain. Now that Whole Foods is open on 57th and 2nd, maybe I can stop punishing myself by going to the dump better known as D’Ag.

I went here out of sheer laziness as it’s so close and regreted it every time. The other review was spot on with the pathetically lackluster service and the abysmally poor selection but failed to mention the disgusting conditions in the store itself. A few weeks ago I ran in for a few staples including bread. Since my husband was in a rush, I grabbed the first loaf I saw and at the checkout line found that a furry rodent had eaten through the bag and a substantial part of the bread. Grossed out I left and yesterday, with nothing but my sloth to blame, I went in for bread again. With my last experience fresh in my mind, I began checking the bag and bread only to find that the prepackaged loaves were wet on the inside and covered in mold. Even nine months pregnant in oppressive heat and humidity, I’ve resolved to suck it up and walk the extra couple of blocks to avoid this Dags in the future and suggest others do the same.

The fact that I am the first to write a review for this horrible, wretched, filthy foodbucket reveals only the median age of the neighborhood in which it has undoubtedly sat for the last 25 years. There are not many young people here(see my review for Jubilee) and therefore, presumably, not many Unilocalers. If this place were even 20 blocks north there would be at least 5 other reviews by people who would be irate at the incredibly poor selection, bizarrely high prices, and worst of all the rude, slow, unhelpful and completely unapologetic service. I know that it’s probably not fun to work in a food market. So I blame the clearly terrible morale of the people who work here on the management and ownership of the place. I don’t know what they do but whatever it is should be a case study in how not to run a retail operation. I was in here two days ago trying to buy a quarter pound of deli meat. There was one lady behind the counter. She is very old and bent and I feel badly to criticize her. So, I won’t, because it’s really not her fault. I blame the manager who watched how slowly she was helping customers, who watched the ever-growing line forming, and did NOTHING to get others to pitch in, or even to apologize for the wait. Someone waiting with me said it was pretty typical of this place. The produce is horrible. The prices are way too high. This place should be gutted and taken over. The owners should be ashamed of themselves.
