A bit surprised at Allan F.‘s review on July 5^th, as this store closed for good the next day.

I have been shopping at D’Agostinos ever since it opened in my neighborhood. I have had my ups and downs experience but just recently I have seen a complete turn around for the better. My thanks go to one person involved. He is a recently new co-​manager named Peter Gonzoles. He is professional and he goes out of his way to give you the best customer service possible. When Peter is there the store runs like clockwork and all the employees respect him. It’s just a different atmosphere, a positive atmosphere when Peter is there. I hope he is here to stay and I just wanted to thank you for bringing him to our store at 1031 Fisrt Avenue! Please don’t transfer him to another store. I look forward to seeing him at the store where I shop almost every day. I couldn’t picture going to D’Agostinos not seeing his smiling face. I will definitely be a full time customer at this store thanks to Peter! Allan France & John Valentino

I have lived in the neighborhood for four months and this is the closest supermarket to my home. I have never found shopping at this store a pleasant experience, primarily due to the cashiers attitude, never friendly and usually borderline rude. I have started shopping at the D’Agostino a few blocks south and the difference is night and day. The cashiers at the other location are extremely friendly and courteous. I think the difference is due to poor training, management and staff at this location. Tonight I went in for a few items and found both female cashiers beyond rude. I will never shop at this location again. When I asked the first cashier a question she ignored me twice, before her counterpart directed me to another line. It would have been civil to acknowledge my question, but that apparently that is not a job requirement at this store. I will be writing Corporate Headquarters as well, as this store should be closed due to the awful attitude of its employees.

Overly priced, long wait for check out, vegetables are in bad shape, products are just ok but sometimes it’s the same old stuff nothing new and exciting.
It’s a shame because it’s the closest supermarket to my home and I wish it was something else instead.
Please clear this location to something more successful and stop taking advantage of old people who cannot shop far from home.

I got eggplant from the deli counter. When I get it home I noticed it was moldy! NEVER shopping there again

I love D’Agostino. It’s right by my office and deli is loaded with options. Produce is a little pricey, but there are other great deals in the store.

Don’t waste your time shopping here the store is dirty and the people that work here think they are doing you a favor, Something has changed in the last few months maybe upper mgmt, But you can tell the stores are going down hill.

Quite simply the rudest most sullen staff imaginable. Keep on walking — Whole Foods is just around the corner.

It’s expensive, tiny, and the meats/​seafood options didn’t look that fresh. It could also use some organization. I would much rather head to Food Emporium 3 blocks down on 59^th and 1^st.

The cheapest grocery store around this general area.
I check the circular every Friday morning to compare its sales with food emporium, whole food, and walgreen. Sometimes the meat is super cheap (almost comparable to Pathmark’s!). But generally the price is still a tad higher. Definitely come early if you want to get the meat deal. They only put out about 5 sales item. and it’s all gone by 11.
I come here for my yogurt, frozen waffles, and drinks (usually just OJ or gatorade).
You can get a better deal for soda from walgreen or duane reade. Skinny cow ice cream bars are more expensive here than duane reade too! (by a dollar or 2).
Very limited selections. but hey there are at least other grocery stores around!

There is really no point in coming here unless you live near by.
Prices are crazy high, which is to be expected. This is my emergency only grocery store if Food Emporium doesn’t have what I’m looking for. Not that the prices at Food Emporium are that much better.
They have an OK variety of items. There is a Fruit/​Veg Vendor outside this D’Agostino location, take advantage of that. The vendor is quick and has great prices. That could help save you some money on fruits and veg at least.
Service is a hit or miss. Usually a miss. I remember ONE occasion many moons ago when the kindest gentleman helped me look for something. I never saw him again. Lines can get long depending on what time you go. Cashiers are quick but not the kindest.
+1 star for being one of the few grocery stores to still sell Dunk-​a-​Roos.

Dags are everywhere so they are always conveniently located. This particular store is somewhat small so it gets crowded walking through the aisles. But although small, they have a good supply and selection of most grocery items. The deli looks a bit dingy so I’ve never bought deli items here. Some of the produce looks good on occasion, but is pricy – I still prefer to buy my produce from the produce stand about 50 feet away.

So, what’s the deal here? Everyone who writes reviews of Manhattan grocery stores came from some small town with a Ma & Pa grocery that had everyone’s preferences in mind, contacts with all the best local suppliers of everything and a passel of chiiuns who cleaned the store floor to ceiling everyday?
Just moved here from France where we actually had all that, in addition to large hypermarches. I gotta tell you, EVERY D’Agos (and other big groceries) I’ve been in here fall comfortably between the 2 European options. The 2 D’Agos on 1^st between 53^rd & 60^th are no exception. The smaller one has less variety, of course.
Both are clean, not unreasonably crowded (even the smaller one), offer decent selections (the larger one, of course has a huger selection!), and I;ve never failed to find someone who could direct me to what I needed.
OK, staff is not the friendliest. I don’t know, this may be an issue of corporate culture. I generally find Food Emporium staff to be the friendliest; Morton Williams to be the least friendly; and most D’Agos in between. But we need to keep some perspective. Nearly all Manhattan chain groceries are staffed by people who cannot afford to live in the neighbourhood; they often have a 1+ hour commute to and from work. This is not a smaller city where evryone lives nearby and knows the customers. But staff often DOES know the customers.
If you want the best service, then maybe you need to be the best customer by trying to recognize the staff and treat them as fellow human beings.
Prices. Well, it seems to be the same all over the world! Some claim that their favorite store has the best prices. Truth seems to be, here in Manhattan as everywhere else I have lived: one place has the best price on THIS; another has the best price on THAT; but, overall, it kind of averages out.
Moral: chose a store that best meets your needs: variety; service; price. Do most of your shopping there. Get stuff you really need at better prices elsewhere.
That seems fair.
I’m only giving this D’Agos a 3* rating because I can hardly imagine a supermarket that could rate higher. Supermarkets are, almost by definition, «average».

High prices, medium to low quality food products. Put in a little effort and go somewhere else.

It’s convenient and I find the service to be fine. It’s cheaper than Food Emporium for some things but a ripoff for others (a $ 6.99 loaf of bread– very good quality– but $ 6.99?).
I just went to Whole Foods and found Whole Foods to be much cheaper overall– and cannot wait until the Whole Foods opens on 56^th & 3^rd.

Come on now, people. I’m seeing a lot of blanket statements about ALL locations and downright haterism going on. I’ll attribute that to lack of maturity or simple non-​skill at writing a review. That being said, I have shopped at the location on Greenwich street several times and it wasn’t too bad. No one gave me attitude or looked like they just got out of jail. Food was a little pricey, but we’re talking Manhattan here. Bodegas are pricier and dirtier, what do you want? It’s no Whole Foods, that’s for sure, but is that what you were expecting? The place seemed to be clean. I’ve ordered sheet cakes from this location for office parties and they are not that bad for a grocery store. Once they spelled congratulations without the «s» but it made for a good laugh. Not my fave store, but not a total shithole either.

All grocery stores in this neighborhood are very overpriced. It’s either due to rent or just that the people who don’t like to go too far to buy their groceries are willing to pay more. As has already been mentioned, the staff generally goes out of their way to be unhelpful. Whenever I come here, the cashiers look at me like I’m interrupting their valuable texting /​inappropriate work conversation time when I get on line with my 3 items. The Greenpoints system they use is ridiculous too. The only way to save on certain items is to store up a ton of points from overpriced purchases before it. I am rarely at D’Agostino’s, so my points don’t add up too quickly. The quality of many items is just poor as well. The other day, I wanted to buy some grape tomatoes for a salad, it was one of the main reasons I walked over here from where I housesit instead of going elsewhere. The tomato shelf was infested with fruit flies, so I decided against my original plan. Not all of their produce is that bad, but it’s not great. The dates on the meat and dairy tend to be very soon after the date that I am in the store, making me not want to buy anything.
The selling point to this D’Agostino’s used to be that they were open until 11pm. They ended that over a year ago though. At least the Food Emporium under the bridge is still open until then. If you need a store open until midnight, walk down to 2^nd Ave and 49^th Street — Morton Williams. Similar bad prices, but definitely better quality.
Oh and just when I thought this D’Agostino’s couldn’t get any more pathetic, they added carpeting a while back. CARPETING? In a grocery store? Now if anything spills it’s that much worse for them to clean. I’m assuming one of the octogenarians who populate the area must’ve slipped, so the management decided to carpet the place. The appearance of this store is suffocating — the ceilings are very low and it’s very cramped. We should be used to that in NYC, but in the end, it is just another negative aspect of this store.
If you are on 1^st Ave and you don’t feel like walking up a few more blocks to Food Emporium, walk down to the D’Agostino’s at 53^rd St (yes, literally 4 blocks from this one), because it’s slightly more tolerable. It is no surprise that most residents of this neighborhood just stick with Fresh Direct.

Overpriced, Depressing Cave
Grocery shopping in Manhattan isn’t a joy (in most cases) — it’s a chore. Shopping at this D’Agostino, while stocked with a decent selection of the basics, was miserable and I hope to never repeat it again.
Features: Narrow aisles, outdated, dirty-​looking store (and you sell … food?), and uninspired (make that indifferent) service. It’s downright depressing. Oh, and relatively high prices, even compared to the Food Emporium Bridgemarket a few blocks away. I would happily pay a little more at the Food Emporium, which offers shoppers a better experience.
