Chris Hui Photography

Chris and his photography are stellar! We just had an hour and a half session in battery park and we got amazing photos! He has a great sense for composing photos, using natural sunlight and getting the best from his clients. I highly recommend him and his services.

Chris Hui is extremely unprofessional. I purchased a Groupon deal for his engagement photography package and when I contacted him to ensure that he would be able to shoot in Brooklyn, N.Y., after he confirmed that the location was ok, he tried to up-​sell me.
He said that the Groupon deal was «mis-​priced» and being updated from $ 149 to $ 249. He refused to honor the Groupon deal that I purchased (as I, a potential client would have NO IDEA of a pricing issue, nor should that be my problem). If a mis-​price was such an issue, he should have had Groupon remove the deal completely, especially since he would refuse to honor it for anyone who purchased it.
I took a screen shot of the text message conversation between he and I from his U.S. phone number, (323) 638‑4818 and will GLADLY email them to anyone who thinks that this did not happen. I was appalled that he refused to honor something that someone purchased to work with him, whether there was a pricing issue with the deal between he and Groupon or not. Furthermore, I was shocked that over 50 of his deals had been purchased. I would never work with him (even if it was free), nor would I recommend him to anyone else.
This is NOT how you conduct business and if he’s so high-​strung for money, he shouldn’t work with Groupon PERIOD… work by word of mouth and freelance without any public outlets and set your prices to what you want them to be the FIRST TIME. Do not try to up-​sell someone, EVER. Disgusting!
I WOULD GIVE A NEGATIVE RATING IF I COULD BECAUSE 1 STAR IS STILL NOT LOW ENOUGH!

Okay so… I’ve been putting off writing this review because I was contemplating whether or not to write it and how I should rate him.
First off, you need to know that I purchased the photo shoot session through Groupon for $ 200. The deal was a 90-​minute on-​location photo shoot, 30 retouched digital images and a CD of all images. Sounds like a great deal to you too doesn’t it?
Second, this photo shoot wasn’t for engagement purposes, rather it was to celebrate my three year anniversary with my boyfriend. I made that clear from the start when I first emailed Chris. I wanted the photo shoot to be less serious and more fun. This is the main reason why I chose to purchase the photo shoot from Groupon. I would have never done so if it was for my REAL engagement photo shoot. After this experience, I know that for sure.
To start off, Chris was a great photographer to work. From the start, he was easy going and a pleasure. He made the photo shoot enjoyable and less awkward. Like how the other Unilocal reviews describe, he made us laugh, and taught us how to pose for the camera.
The reason why I picked Chris in the first place was because I liked the way he utilized the light to amplify the intensity of the photo. I thought he had a great technique.
So, why am I giving him two stars?
The first issue was rather small. He was late to our photo shoot and didn’t even have the courtesy to call and give us the heads up. After waiting for ten minutes, I called him originally to make sure he wasn’t lost. We were going to have our photos taken around the high school my boyfriend and I both graduated from. The school took up a whole block, and parking is difficult to find. When Chris picked up his phone, he sounded rather offended and said he would be there as soon as possible. It was 6 pm and he blamed the traffic on the BQE for his lateness. I don’t know about you guys but… there is ALWAYS traffic on the BQE.
Anyways…
After the photo shoot, Chris immediately told us that we would not be receiving our photos until 6 weeks of time. Seemed reasonable. 6 weeks went by and I did not hear from Chris at all. Chris was a nice guy so I trusted that he would email us the photos soon enough. I was well aware that I purchased a GROUPON and that he most likely prioritized his other customers before us. I was fine with that. I just wanted to know the STATUS of our photos. I didn’t mind if he needed for time, I just wanted there to be some form of communication.
A week went by and still no photos. I sent Chris a email that simply asked when my pictures would be available.
After not receiving a response for two days, I sent another email. I tried to be as understanding as possible. I told him that I know he must have been busy with other events and that the work may have been overwhelming. I only asked to get an current update on my photos.
By now, he was 2 weeks late and still no response. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt that he accidentally oversaw both of my emails. I gave him a call and, as I expected, he didn’t pick up. I left a message saying the exact same thing I wrote to him through email. The next day… still nothing. I left another voice mail, but by then I was really really upset.
To be simply put, this was just completely unprofessional. Chris was purposely ignoring our emails and our phone calls.
How did I end up getting my photos?
I sent a email to Groupon explaining that I just wanted what I paid for. A day later, I received a email from Chris stating that he will email me my photos by the end of the week. In my mind, I was thinking that he didn’t even take a look at our photos yet.
After waiting for 3 weeks past our promised due date, we finally received our photos.
I wasn’t completely disappointed with the photos… but I’m just going to be straight forward about this, my boyfriend could have done the same or even better. Photography is a hobby of his and his stepfather is also in the business. I purchased this photo shoot because my boyfriend was always the guy behind the camera.
Also, I did not receive a CD with all the photos as promised on Groupon. To be honest, I don’t think I would have wanted them anyway. Chris probably didn’t even have enough GOOD photos to choose from when he was selecting our thirty. Why? Not enough photos taken?
Anyways… lesson learned… expect to be treated differently when using a Groupon.
I came into this expecting that from the beginning, but I always wanted to think highly of Chris. I guess not.
For his unprofessional manner, I believe giving him 2 stars is fair enough.

Chris is a joy to work with. He gives just enough direction to help make beautiful photos that still seem natural. He’s great at capturing people, but Chris also manages to make the locations shine, which is an awesome added bonus. It adds a level of interest to the photos that make them even more memorable. The creative angles he took made a lot of our photos look like movie posters. We really appreciated how efficient he was too. I was surprised by how quickly he was able to get great shots. We were constantly moving to new spots to capture new photos. It was fantastic. We ended up with so much variety in our photos. Highly recommend working with Chris.

We used chris hui photography for our engagement photos. We decided to have it taken in brooklyn botanical gardens. We made an appointment to meet up at 8 am but chris was a little late because of traffic but it was ok. He did a very nice job with us and we had a lot of fun. Me and my fiancé are not good in front of the camera and Chris was patient and gave suggestions on how to pose. He made some jokes and made us feel relaxed. We can’t wait to get back the pictures and see it!

Chris was really great to work with. We got engagement photos taken with him in Central Park, and he really helped us (neither of us are that comfortable in front of a camera) relax and enjoy the process. He was on time, really responsive on email and gave us back the photos retouched on very short notice since we needed them quickly. I’d definitely recommend him!

We are from Nashville but decided we wanted to have some engagement pics done in NYC since I used to live there. I researched and came across Chris. He did an awesome job with us. He was really patient and really captured some good fun and natural action shots. If you are in the NYC area I would recommend Chris! He is really accomodating and works with your schedule!

my friends wanted to get engagement photo taken and it was referred by other couple that had wedding shots taken from Chris. I went with them to «help out». the overall experience was great. on first meet up Chris was very patient and spent lots of time first sit down and talk to my friends and listen to what they wanted. during the day of shooting Chris actually spent a lot of time building up the emotions between the couples, and discuss how the end result are supposed to be before shooting. Chris surely did a great job capturing the moment, the pictures came out very natural and truly brought the sweetness and happiness between the two. we went over the scheduled appointment for another 30 – 40 min and Chris did not ask for any additional charge, just to get everything covered. the end result came out very well-​done, natural and feels comfortable looking at the pictures. i’d highly recommend Chris for any photo shoot projects.

Chris and his partner did our engagement photography shoot in Brooklyn and were absolutely brilliant. They were easy to work with and we got engagement photos that we will cherish forever. He had great light play… working with natural light and gave us some great silhouettes. We also got some fantastic panorama shots with the brooklyn bridge in the backdrop. My partner and I are usually very silly with each other so he captured those moments too!
