The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex is a 28-​acre waterfront sports village located between 17th and 23rd Streets along Manhattan’s Hudson River. This $ 120 million, privately-​financed project opened in 1995, transforming four historic, but long-​neglected, piers into a major center for public recreation and waterfront access. Situated on Piers 59, 60 and 61 and in the headhouse that connects them, the Complex features the following sports and entertainment venues: The Golf Club, the Field House, the Sports Center health club, Sky Rink, Bowlmor bowling, Pier Sixty, The Lighthouse, Chelsea Piers Maritime Center and the Studios at Chelsea Piers.

History

Established in 1995.

In 1910, the opening of the Chelsea Piers was marked with a ceremony, including lots of back-​patting after 30 long years of talk & 8 years of construction. For 50 years, the Chelsea Piers served the needs of the New York port: as the city’s premier passenger ship terminal, as an embarkation point for soldiers departing for battlefields, and finally, as a cargo terminal. After that, the Chelsea Piers, like much of Manhattan’s waterfront, became neglected maritime relics, made obsolete by the jet plane that whisked passengers across the Atlantic. In 1992, a newly-​formed company, Chelsea Piers Management, Inc., submitted a bid & proposal, as part of a public auction process, to obtain rights to develop and operate the Chelsea Piers. Beginning in August 1995, Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex opened. This project has transformed the historic, but long-​neglected, Chelsea Piers into a major center for public recreation and waterfront access.

Chelsea Piers is a massive sports complex with an indoor basketball court, track, gym, volleyball, surf lessons/​workouts, yoga, and more. But one activity I go there for is the rock climb wall.
The wall is 46′ high and 100′ wide and is the largest in the city. There are a lot of different levels of difficulties, from a flat and fairly easy climb, to more taxing and strength testing ones.
Me having been afraid of heights during my early years, got over it a bit after a few years of flying and roller-​coaster rides but I still get nervous. I was prepared for the challenge of the climb but not sure how I would do on the height aspect. Making it up the wall was thrilling and definitely got my adrenaline going… but they warn you not to look down when you’re at the top. I had to test it out though and see for myself. 46′ is pretty high when you’re just dangling by a rope and coming down can be a little scary. After a few climbs i was alright and read to make it my next sport to tackle. It’s $ 60 a person, which includes shoes and harness rentals.
I would totally recommend it as a fun group activity!

Nice place to have in the city. Lots of fun activities for grown ups and kids a like. But if they want you to come and spend your money on their offerings charging huge parking fees is not the way to get repeat customers. Management be smart and make it reduced or free when validated by one of the businesses there!!!

Back in NY, I had a exploring the city buddy. Though we honestly just met twice before, we hit it off as buddies pretty quickly. He took me here on one of our exploring the city meetings and had promised he’ll show me the batting cages as I’ve never been.
It was a lot of fun, helmets and bats provided and I swung and connected with some of the balls hurling at me. Other times it just hurled past me. So if you never batted before, make sure you check this place out with someone who does. It was kind of on the pricey side — but I would never know as said guy friend paid for it before I could.
Would definitely want to go back again to try the other areas.

I have been a full time event DJ here in the city since 1992 and have not experienced the complete greed i did at Chelsea piers. I dj’d a wedding recently on a boat that took off from Pier 60. My set up was extensive so i figured the parking fee of $ 53 was crazy high but i didn’t have time to move the car across the west side highway to park. Well the large print says $ 53 dollars when i went to pay imagine my surprise when 9 hours of parking cost $ 89 dollars!!! Despicable. This is the type of piggish greed that typically does a business in. This business should be ASHAMED of themselves to rip off people like this…$ 50 i can understand… not $ 90…i will make sure i tell anyone considering going here to be prepared to be fully and completely ripped off. shame on them.

I use their golf range. Beautiful spot with great view of the Hudson. Sometimes there are yachts docked here, and I imagine smashing my drives past the net into these boats.

This place has everything; all in one facility! I haven’t tried their acrobatics gym yet, but it looks like a blast. The multi-​floor golf driving range is a lot of fun, and they’re open into the odd hours for some relaxing swinging. They have mini golf too for the kids. There’s also a bowling alley which has pool tables as well and decent food. This is one of those places that truly adds value to New York’s variety of things to do.

I have been living in New York for nearly 8 years and have seen a vast array of fitness facilities, but the Chelsea Piers far surpasses any others. Among its highlights are its array of options, clean facilities, and very helpful staff.
Most specifically, I can recall numerous instances when the staff at the rock wall went above and beyond to make my experience that much better. From the minute I showed up, they were welcoming and excited. Daniel Spellman was one of the few names that I can recall — he single handedly got me up to speed, showed me a few techniques to make my climbing experience more engaging and challenging. After I caught on a bit, he recognized my ability and brought me to more challenging routes that he had personally set. From there, the passion took over.
Since that day, I have climbed at other NYC climbing facilities (SRB, BKB, The Cliffs), but none are as challenging and diverse as the walls at the Piers. Daniel’s paths show great understanding of the climbing sport and never disappoint. I would highly recommend anyone looking to get into climbing, looking for a fun challenge, or just a great workout to go and check out the rock wall at the Chelsea Piers. And don’t forget to ask for Dan!

Just hosted my husbands 30th w friends and family as guests. My husband loves sports and anything that makes the body move. We chose the adult package Olympic sports game. We did dodgeball, bubble ball soccer, a timed obstacle course and pedestal jousting. I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun.
We finished with an hour and a half happy hour in a private room. I was able to bring a 6ft long and wings for everyone and decorate the room. I would suggest bringing a mini speaker to play music in the room. I even made a video of pictures and played it on a DVD player in the room we had. Not sure if every room has a DVD and flat screen.
Katie cooper helped me organize this event and she was a doll.
Cannot speak highly enough about the service provided. Even our bartender was a sweetheart!

Amazing! Went for my birthday party (imagine a bunch of adults doing their Mini-​Olympics). SO MUCH FUN!
We called to setup the private event and were given a great rate and lots of choices to give me a Mini-​Olympics for my birthday. We ended up paying around $ 55 per person (10 person minimum) for 4 Games and a private room. We chose Giant Jenga, the Batting Cages, Gladiator Jousting and the Obstacle Course (with foam pit). If you’re an adult you have no idea how hard it is to get out of a foam pit! Soooo much fun and sooooo hard at the same time.
The refs were so nice and were so chill with us about our craziness… overall it was one of the best birthdays ever. So thank you CP!

I was at the Gym here on a travelzoo deal and «Membership for a Day» certainly has its privileges. I checked in around 9:15 and, without exaggeration, left the gym at 5:45.
Of course any benefit of working out that day was obliterated by the post-​workout burger and adult beverages (I’ll review that later).
The locker rooms are clean, loads of towels, and robes if wearing towels to the shower has gotten old or you don’t feel like modeling your speedo on the way to the pool — which is not connected to the locker room and a minute or two walk to the end by the river.
Yoga to Spin to Break for a snack to Rock Climbing (rental gear extra — I just bouldered so my shoes were 6 bucks) to beach volleyball to shooting the basketball around to laps in the pool with a riverside view. There were a couple other classes that I would have liked to take like the surfboard workout but didn’t have time.
One of the cooler things I experienced was the beach vball culture. I don’t know if its like this all the time, but I haven’t played in years and was telling them that I’m not good enough to hang. But with some encouragement and a friendly «everyone is good enough to play,» I was swept into what they were calling gauntlet where only the person who shanks gets kicked off the court (which means I was off the court a lot). I don’t have «sand legs» as I play hard court, but I was told that the sand is more giving than usual which probably added to my bad timing.
All in all it was a good day.

I take the kids I babysit here for soccer and gymnastics practice and wish I could be taking myself! Haha. Really though, I’m sure it costs a fortune! The have a beautiful gym, basketball courts, soccer fields, batting cages, driving ranges, rock climbing, etc etc.
All kinds of fun and physically engaging activities for all ages :) Great for fun family outings or creative dates!

I’ve been to Chelsea Piers several times and love it.
* Gym: I love the gym. They have a huge track (quarter mile) that I run on. Also, all the equipment you’d ever want. Plus a big boxing area.
* Bowling: I liked bowling here. It wasn’t my favorite bowling alley (it seems a bit cramped between lanes), but it was still a good time.
* Batting cages: Came here to hit some balls and they have all the options you need (slow/​fast/​pro pitch). They provide helmets and bats for free if you don’t have your own.
* Volleyball: they have both sand and regular volleyball courts. The sand is really nice quality
I just wish it wasn’t so far. Taking the M23 is helpful to get across town to it.

You don’t necessarily have to spend any money here, even a stroll through the complex can be a lot of fun when you’re with the right people.

Batting cages, soccer, rock climbing, gymnastics, boating, driving ranges, bowling, video games, billiards … I really could go on and on. My biggest problem with Chelsea Piers is that I haven’t taken full advantage of its facilities and offerings yet. It’s one of those places you can visit no matter who you’re with, what time of day (or year) it is, or what you’re in the mood to do. There’s something for everyone.
Although I don’t love golf, the driving ranges are really fun (and the view of the Hudson as you whack your frustrations away on those golf balls doesn’t hurt, either). The indoor facilities will no doubt motivate you to start a pick-​up game of whichever sport you prefer (or make you reminisce about your younger days when you were agile enough TO start a pick-​up game). On a spring or summer day, it’s nice to just walk along the piers and watch the boats (one of which you might be boarding to take a dinner or dancing cruise around Manhattan).
For those who haven’t been to Chelsea Piers, the one warning I’ll give is that you should probably eat elsewhere before you go. For a place with so many activities, Chelsea Piers is surprisingly lacking in the food department (except for the Chelsea Brewery, which I’m really not crazy about).

Where is the only place you can go to watch kids do gymnastics, play sports, and push around other kids while you stand outside like a peeping Tom, trying to not look like a pedophile? Well! This is the place for you!
My beau and I found this to be a warm haven when we were awaiting to dock on Pier 62 and were just amused by the mini-​merry-​go-​round they had outside. The place is really equipped with new equipment and a caring staff of instructors. There was a birthday party apparently going on and they kids looked like they were having a blast.
I know, I know, you’re like wondering, «How long did you stay staring at these kids you freak?» But we stayed a good 45 minutes and totally got caught up watching a battle to the death lacrosse game. I wish I was little again. :sigh:
One star was revoked due to the lighting; it seemed a little dark in some areas of the place and it made the complex cheap-​like.
