Bonobos

I had a great experience having it be my first time ever at a Bonobos store. Big shoutout to my personal shopper, Sheldon, who was very accommodating even when I didn’t have an appointment. He was very professional and helpful with his opinions. I highly recommend that you seek him out if you ever decide to stop by this store. You will not be disappointed.

This Bonobos had a good selection of merchandise to check out and was nicely organized but unfortunately the snooty attitudes of most of the staff made my boyfriend and me want to exit as quickly as possible. We did not have an appointment, but, on a Sunday assumed that since T just wanted to check out their new wool pants that it’d be more than fine. The store itself was pretty empty with a 1:1 ratio of employees to customers.
We were offered help on the first floor but declined, as T was just browsing, but upon heading upstairs he saw a pair he liked and wanted to try on for fit. The saleswoman upstairs seemed very unwilling to let him try on, explaining the showroom model which I assured her we knew about. T just wanted to try on in his size since wool tends to be more stiff and he happens to be the sample size. Finally another salesperson let him in and he tried on the pants. He liked them and wanted to write down the style number which again the first saleswoman seemed EXTREMELY reluctant about. She literally sighed in annoyance as she attempted to explain again that we couldn’t buy them from the store, which we knew. She then pulled up the completely wrong pant on the monitor, at which point we just abandoned and figured we’d find them on the website ourselves.
Sucks that this was such a mixed experience — other Bonobos’ in the city and in Chicago were more warm and welcoming. If someone says they’ve already shopped at Bonobos and that they get the model, then, the sales staff should calm down. Just be happy that someone likes the clothes and wanted to come in and check stuff out in person.

Absolutely horrible… will never go back. Booked an hour appointment. Perhaps I had unreasonable expectations in which I thought the first thing the sales person would do is take my measurements. No measurements were taken. Took me 55 minutes to get the right fitting shirt. Also they don’t have all the styles of pants and sizes. So I’m trying on plaid pants with a striped shirt because they were the right size but not the color that I would want. I was hoping that I would be working with a stylist that could measure me, pick out some coordinated outfits in sizes, styles, and colors that work for me. This was an extremely frustrating experience.

I don’t usually see the benefit of reviewing a particular outpost of a large corporation, but I’m giving this location five stars because the employee who assisted me, Taylor, was wonderful. If you’re thinking about checking out Bonobos in the city I recommend you come to this location and seek her out.

The best thing about this shop is that you only really have to go there once. Actually, you may only want to go there once. Bonobos has «guide shops» to help you find the right fit and then they place the order and it ships to you in a few days. This one is housed in the space that used to be Kenneth Cole on 5^th Ave. You spend hundreds of dollars and walk out of the store empty-​handed, but once I knew the deal it was all good. Nothing was wrong with any of that. The rest, however was odd and a bit uncomfortable. O.k., the trousers fit and feel great and the shirts are awesome. I did notice though that with all of the talk about fit, when I asked about tailoring the length the response was «people like to get their own tailors.» This made me wonder just what the hell we were doing for the last 30 minutes if I still have to take the pants to my tailor to get the length done. I will even let it go that my salesperson struggled to explain the 3 different fabrics to me and their price points (maybe she was still learning). She did tell me that one fabric is likely to split, so I did appreciate that.
What was odd and uncomfortable was that the the sales people seemed to hate each other. No, really hate each other. Not even just a mild dislike. I mean Walmart level if-​you-​say-​one-​more-​word-​to-​me-​I-​will-​cut-​you kind of hatred. If they do not actually hate each other and this was their «warm» side, then I think online is best for us all. Some employees seemed to disengage right in front of me. I have never even seen a Gap employee just start browsing on their phones in front of customers. Maybe he just needed a minute. It was that bad.
It’s great that they offer drinks while you wait including beer, but maybe there should be a pre-​opening cocktail brunch to loosen things up a bit. I have to say that the employees are a big downside. Other than the main miserable sales staff, the other biggest downside to Bonobos are the limited styles. For suiting they have the basic black/​blue/​grey/​less grey trousers and suits and a few shirts that are not white or a variation of blue. They have lots of old-​man trousers that really no person (young nor old) should wear. The casual stuff looks pretty nice, especially the jeans, shirts, and sweaters. There are a few frat-​boy pea coats that I did try, but too boxy for a company that focuses on «fit.»
My final analysis is that Bonobos is worth it if you do not mind that one visit. So go! Get clothes that fit. Have a beer, you might need it.

This place is the sht!
Aside from the great clothing, the store itself is very nice. The people are extremely friendly, helpful, and ready to get you fitted.
Also, while you get fitted they give you a complimentary beer or water… which is nice.
