Astor Place Subway Station

Clean and spacious. It goes to St. Marks, where a lot of good food are at.
This station is up to date, with little signs that tell you when the next train is arriving.
It is also connected to a Kmart. You can walk out through the turnstile and walk into the kmart, convenient!

Astor Place Subway is one of the nicer subway stops in New York. It’s by no means Grand Central but it has a pretty cool look with its glass entrance. The glass entrance reminds me of the Taipei train entrances. It has digital signs for the train arrivals and there is tile along the walls. If tile doesn’t make something classy, I don’t know what would.
Astor Place is close to a lot of attractions like NYU, Washington Park, Union Park, Momofuku Noodle Bar, Artichoke Basille’s and your mama’s house. I had to throw in the last one. Yes. I have never fully grown up and still act like an immature 12 year old. However, it’s one of the better looking train stations in NY. Is it a tourist attraction? I don’t think so.

Take the 6 local train to Astor Place. It will take to you most food finds of St. Mark’s Place in East Village.
This subway station once contained restrooms for men and women respectively but, unfortunately, it is now converted to a newsstand on the north end of Lexington Avenue (Brooklyn-​bound platform). Mosaic tiles are prominently present. Try to find a hidden beaver!

One of the nicest stations very clean and convenient

This is one of the classier subway stations, with subway tiled, closed Men and Women restrooms on one platform, and a Kmart on the other. Digital ETA boards also help, and make sure you catch the correct 6 uptown.
All tracks screech simply from trains passing as if they have awful brakes.

This is a great subway station and I love living next to it. It’s got the signs to tell you how long it will be until the next train and it’s even got one of the new smart boards in it now. On the downtown side, you can go straight into Kmart and go up the stairs right to Starbucks. What more could you ask for?

Good station. You go down and you’re on the platform. I don’t like that there is one entrance for uptown and another for downtown. You can’t change directions unless you go out and in again. They should’ve made stations like in Berlin — you stand in the middle and there are two tracks — one of the right for uptown, one on the left for downtown.
I do love that at last you know when the train is coming. It’s 2013. This technology exists for decades in other countries.

Being that I work close to the 28^th street #6 Astor Place subway stop it’s always a quick trek for when I want to escape the area for lunch somewhere down by St Marks Place, or do some shopping at KMart if I need anything.
St Marks Place is pretty much a block across the street, with many bars and spots to eat all along it. Usually, the MUD Truck is parked right outside the subway entrance heading back uptown and always worth picking up a cup of coffee or hot chocolate for the ride.
The station is fairly clean as NYC subway standards go. The #6 runs constantly every few minutes as a local line. The entrance to KMart is underground across the opening to the turnstyles for easy access.
Oh, who am I kidding? I take the subway to this stop so I can get my beer drinking on at McSorelys Old Ale House close by and then stumble back home!

I live along the 6 train line, so I regularly find myself at all stops between 28^th and Canal Street. Sometimes it’s Spring Street, sometimes it’s Bleeker… and sometimes it’s Astor Place. Of the above, the latter is probably my favorite of the bunch. It’s easy to get to, you can buy a pack of gum or the lastest celeb rag down below, and I never miss an opportunity to re-​create Billy Joel’s Turnstiles record before rolling uptown

I do like this subway station because I know when I get off I am usually in for a good night in the St. Marks area. A fun filled, alcohol fused adventure that can include many other things. I like that it is also the six train stop right after 14^th Union Square going down town and you get here pretty fast from 42^nd street Grand Central. It is kind of cool too to see the KMART entrance when you get off the station. You can’t cross over to the other side that is true. Only downtown and then you would have to pay again to go uptown if you got on the wrong stop.

It’s kinda interesting to come out of the subway and have a KMART entrance right there. Odd and interesting. Or for that matter be exiting KMART and go straight to the subway platform. Weird and kinda cool at the same time.
What’s more you can exit on the Northbound side and be right in front of the Mudtruck, if your caffeine needs have not recently been met.
All-​in-​all it’s a good station, with some classic old-​world style. It’s efficient and often quicker to get off here than Union Square, the maze that never ends.

Decent subway stop.
Ive used this for over four years now and I have always been comfortable to take it even at midnight.
Sometimes there are panhandlers or musicians who occasionally just spend time entertaining people while waiting on the platform.
Theres a small store inside just in case you want a quick stop by snack or drink inside the train ride.
Machines are outside, and also a live person kiosk ²⁴⁄₇

Astor Place is the closest subway station to The Cooper Union, and was renovated in 1986. The graphic elements – large diagonally-​oriented square plaques in colors complementing the station’s color scheme – were designed by Milton Glaser, an alumnus of Cooper Union. Throughout the station there are also ceramic plaques of beavers, representing the source of John Jacob Astor’s wealth.
The dedication of this renovation was actually in the fall of 1981, and an art student – whose name I forget – at Cooper designed a rainbow balloon arch (this was before the rainbow had been appropriated as a symbol by the gay community) that was fastened at the top of the Foundation Building of Cooper and the other end to another building across Astor Place. I was one of the people who participated in the construction of the arch that day; it was featured on the Newscenter 4 weather broadcast as one of the New York scenes shown behind their «The Five Days Ahead» feature. We all cheered.
When I first came to New York in 1980, I recall this as being my «home» station, since I was a Cooper student. I remember in 1981 seeing a renegade drawing by Keith Haring of two cartoon figures involved in a lewd act on the chalkboard in the station. (This was before he was Keith Haring, if you know what I mean.)
Although this station is on the National Register of Historic Places, it was markedly changed in the renovation, and the glass-​and-​cast-​iron kiosk over the uptown entrance was reconstructed; it’s a reproduction of the original one, which had been dismantled well before I came to the city in 1980. (Many people have remarked on the stupidity of demolishing it only to reconstruct it again; nevertheless, the architecture firm won an award for it.)
I sorely miss the underpass between the uptown and downtown trains; this was sealed in 1986. If you get on the wrong platform, you lose a fare or 18 minutes, depending on whether you bought a single-​ride or unlimited MetroCard.
