Artists & Fleas is a daily marketplace inside Manhattan’s Chelsea Market showcasing over 30 of the best local makers, collectors and independent designers selling a wide range of one-​of-​a-​kind items including jewelry and accessories, screen-​printed shirts, vintage clothing, vinyl records, ready to wear, wall art, photography, greeting cards, personal care products, scented candles, collectables, gifts and more in a uniquely created and curated alternative indoor shopping environment. New sellers debut every other week making Artists & Fleas at Chelsea Market a place to consistently discover new, emerging talent and creativity. Artists & Fleas is located directly beneath the High Line, New York’s elevated rail line turned urban park and walkway and is situated at the southeast corner of Chelsea Market with access to the market’s dozens of eateries, specialty food purveyors and shops. Its location in the heart of the Meatpacking District makes it steps from restaurants, bars and couture shopping as well as a scenic path along the Hudson River.

History

Established in 2003.

In December 2003, we opened Artists & Fleas in an empty warehouse on N. 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. The market was established as a marketplace to bring together emerging artists, indie designers, vintage collectors and enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a place to show and sell together. As an alternative to a retail setting, the relaxed, but energized, environment offered a way for sellers to get feedback directly from shoppers and network with fellow creative folks.

Part community gathering spot, part hipster haven, Artists & Fleas has hosted thousands of artists and vendors since opening its doors. It’s a place where buyers find unique designs, artists and vintage collectors in an atmosphere that’s in the tradition of old world marketplaces with a firm foot in what is contemporary, original and hip.

Now in its 11th year, Artists & Fleas continues to build a cooperative community gathering place NY and can now be found in a monthly market in DTLA.

Love the unique gifts that I can find here ! They have something for everyone — jewelry, clothes, candles and shoes. Wish they had more locations — midtown or uptown.

Cute little indoor market with a variety of goods, from jewelry to art to clothing and tote bags. I like to frequent these places, especially if you get a chance to talk to the actual artisan who created whatever you’re interested in. I like the one place that will make you a necklace — you just pick out what dangly bits you like and they’ll put it together for you right on the spot.
To say that this is a flea market is misleading — when I think of flea markets, I think of used goods and that’s not exactly what is here. Some are items made out of vintage «ingredients», but not all.

How neat! I usually don’t like going to these kinds of stalls since I don’t need like 95% of the items here but I liked what I saw. A lot of the designs are very cute and you can’t see these anywhere else. You got your jewelry but there’s a lot of other trinkets as well.
I liked the pouch station — there were pouches with lots of ridiculous sayings on them. I also liked the travel gear station and NYC dog designs.

I didn’t quite like this market very much. I much prefer the Williamsburg weekend market in Brooklyn.
This flea in Chelsea market is a lot smaller but nothing too interesting. I found the items more generic. Not saying ALL vendors. I’m hoping it’s just my bad luck of vendors. I was in and out of this flea in 15 minutes. It was a tad boring.
The sellers seem more rude. There were only 2 vendors that caught my attention, one is the hand-​written postcards and the other is the scented candles.

I love Chelsea Market, but I have never been inside this cute artist market. It gets a lot of hidden gems. Many good local artist and crafters. I got a handmade necklace and earrings for $ 100 total from a little stand called Yania. It’s pricy, but all my friends said it’s very pretty. There are also many other Jewelry shops inside. If I’m back to the market, I’ll definitely visit this flea market again.

90% of the vendors are selling the thing, accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
The other 10% is selling clothing, shoes, headbands, bags, paintings, vintage goods, and the occasional postcards.
There’s not much to see here and it is ridiculously crowded.
Once you go in, you won’t be able to get out unless you push! Stand stills happen all the time when someone stop to look at something.
Everything is also pricey because they are «unique», «original» or vintage.
Would not be walking into this place ever again.

Unfortunately everything here is not outstanding and what I have already seen in different places.
Probably they change the artists and vendors but not really I can take my friends here or to shop a unique gift.
It’s too bad. Maybe good for tourists but not really locals.

Not too bad, a lot more jewelry shops than any other shop. I found 1 gem which sells gold-​filled jewelery (versus sterling silver + gold plated). I also loved this headband shop that was within the Chelsea market. There was only 1 vendor that sold vintage goods, so really most of it is handmade stuff. However, you can probably buy most of the jewelry stuff on etsy.

This place is full mix of art and vintage goods. There is a great selection of original art, sometimes the artists are the ones selling. Some of the artists are actually working on projects behind there stands. There are some great gifts from vintage dealers selling vinyl, clothing, jewelry, posters and signs.
This is a great place to find a unique gift for that special someone, as long has you got the cash to go large. The prices are all high, but for what you get its worth it. I saw some vintage jewelry in there that was way awesome. It’s slightly limited but still really cool.
The used vinyl prices were actually 30% — 40% over what they should have been. I bet he does alright with impulse shoppers.

pretty on the outside, but you got a cold, cold heart, artists & fleas.
can you get any more pretentious? I was eating at Amy’s bread when my friend walked in. «I can’t believe what just happened,» she laughed, having just tried to buy her boyfriend a present at Artists and Fleas. «they tried to charge me $ 125 for a t shirt. a plain t shirt.»
the salesman wasn’t joking. he claimed his items were oh-​so original, so that justified his ridiculous prices. he was selling band tees.
flabbergasted and still laughing, we walked over to see what else was there. all the salespeople treated us with the same haughty better-​than-​thou attitude about how incredible their merchandise is. never mind that I wouldn’t touch most of it with a 10ft pole. there is some nice stuff, but none of it is original enough or high enough in quality that I wouldn’t go elsewhere for it.

Tucked at one end of Chelsea Marketplace, this smaller version of the Williamsburg location of the same name, Artists and Fleas features local artists trying to promote their talent under one roof. We must’ve viewed some 20+ vendors, all of which were very creative, interesting and fun to look at. We looked at jewelry, clothing, hair accessories, knick-​knacks, more jewelry, art work, lighting fixtures, holiday décor, and plenty of other items I’m probably forgetting. The best thing to do is go there yourself and see. This place is relatively new, it’s also year-​round, and not just for the holidays.

This is a good place to get specialty gifts and cool jewelry. A lot of the local jewelers a really great and have a lot of variety to offer.
It’s not so much a place for artwork, but if you’re looking for cool NY-​y type gifts, this could be a good place for you to check out.

I got this lady’s card cuz I wanted her to make me a wallet that was also a backup tshirt for them days when the humidity pits out my Steve Bono jersey and she tells me, after I waste 35 golden minutes of my prime pretending to be interested in the same maps of Brooklyn every other «artist market» sells so I can score a tshirt wallet hookup, that she «don’t do housecalls.»
Lady, if I want a house call I’ll order cable.
What’s happened to artistry in this country? Why can’t I find a true craftsman or craftsdame to bring my ideas into fruition? I’ve got so many thoughts and wishes saved on my Microsoft surface 2 tablet that cry out to be made into reality. PM for deets.

Man. I give 10 stars for this place!
There is nothing I love more than to find these little alcoves where artists can express themselves and sell their wares direct to the public.
I don’t see a hipster vibe here, its artists selling clothing, jewelry, necklaces, painting/​pictures and most importantly (At least to my teenage son) Vinyl records!
My son was like a kid in a candy store, snapping up records that I had back in the day.
If finds an album from Boston, he acts like he struck gold. Look at this cover dad!
Yeah. Today its all just a faceless download with just a simple click.

The people that are there to sell their things aren’t pushy; they won’t try to talk you into buying anything you don’t want. Some have really good deals, like this one woman that sold rings for $ 5 each, and for every two rings you buy, she lets you pick one out for free. I love coming here for rings.
It can be pricey, but the selection is great, and it is attached to Chelsea Market, so you can grab something to eat after shopping.

This little section of the Chelsea Market is definitely worth visiting. It’s at the very end of the market, and we walked through on a whim.
The vendor mix is great, with everything from jewelry, to vintage clothes, to small home goods, to records and ridiculous HDR photography prints (that I hope you will never consider decorating with).
Prices can get pretty high for what they’re actually selling, but some vendors were willing to bargain with cash. Make sure you look around before you buy anything, as some vendors sell very similar products at opposite ends of the price spectrum.
It’s a great place to find small gifts, or a treat for yourself. My bf even found some things for himself, so there is hope if you bring your man along!

Right at the end of the Chelsea Market this Artisan Flea Market is a mecca for anything vintage and out-​of-​the ordinary. You’ll find anything from handmade silkscreen printed shirts to handmade jewelry of all sorts. Being a jewelry fanatic myself, I love to find new things that cannot be bought anywhere else. But warning: some of the items are EXPENSIVE. Wayyy out of the price range for me. But their pieces are truly an art form.
My favorite vendor there was a kind of «do-​it-​yourself» necklace stand. There was hundreds of charms that could be personalized right then and there. You can buy just the charm or the chain as well. The people working there seemed like they really enjoyed their job. This stand in particular was reasonable.
The vendors here are extremely talented and take pride in their work. It really shows.

I love Chelsea Market, it’s a great spot to go to especially when the weather sucks. You get to go indoors, but I still feel a sense of adventure since there are so many places you can check out inside. Artists & Fleas Market is one of those spots you will bump into while walking around Chelsea Market.
I suggest you go in even if you don’t want to buy anything. There are a lot of creative ideas and products that might interest you. However, if you do decide to buy something make sure you have cash. Most of the vendors only take cash.
