I think I may have found my go to salon.
For the life of me, I can’t remember the name of the gentleman who cut my hair (he was super dashing though…), and this is the FIRST time I’ve ever let a man cut my hair. I initially came in simply for a bang trim (which was around $ 12 — extremely reasonable), but he somehow talked me into getting an actual haircut — which was ~$ 50, and then an additional $ 20 for blow-​dry/​out (I have no idea what the difference is and each salon seems to be contrasting!). So in total it came out to be $ 70. I wish I had taken a photo of my hair because it looked FABULOUS after the cut. He LISTENED to me when I said I didn’t want to take more than 1.5 inches off the bottom, and didn’t cut my bangs too short either. He gave a nice oomph to the layers and topped it off with brief curls at the bottom to make me look fancy for my oh-​so-​important dinner. Needless to say I will be returning for my next cut.
SIDE TIP: they DO accept cards, but you can’t put the tip on the card! Super frustrating, but just be sure to have at least $ 20 in change with you. There is a Chase conveniently located a block away.

Have been coming to Vicki for years. So have a few of my friends. Always great service, friendly, and the cut is the best. My hair just doesn’t look the same with other stylists.

I work across the street from Ar, and I am able to get a same day appointment regularly, which is quite convenient. I’ve had my haircut by 3 or 4 different stylists there, all of which have done a great job. For less than 30 bucks its hard to beat.

What an awesome place! First time customer (and surely will be back again and again) Great atmosphere, music, customer service and of course stylists! Vicky took care of me and she did a great job! Very friendly and for sure knows her job well!

I am a lady with short, short hair that needs to be cut every three weeks or so, and I am so lucky to have found AR Hair Salon. Vicky gives me an awesome style — she is careful to get it exactly right, and I get compliments on my hair everywhere I go.
I’ve recommended this place to a bunch of friends since I’ve discovered it, and they’ve been thrilled with their fabulous styles, too. It’s amazing to find a reasonably-​priced hair salon in Manhattan, and with such talented hair stylists, too. I highly recommend this place (and Vicky, even if it makes it harder for me to get an appointment)!

Friendly, and fit me in for a walk in apt… But the lady who cut my hair didn’t have any idea about up to date styles. She did a terrible job. Very unfortunate. Wouldn’t recommend for young, stylish males.

My stylist was great and professional. But another stylist was speaking about me and my boyfriend with her client in Russian. I am Russian and I could understand every word that she said and it wasn’t good words. I have nice hair cut, but it wasn’t nice atmosphere there. I think it was my first and last time to come there.

5 stars for the bang trim I had.
I decided on AR Hair Salon based off of Katie B’s review that recognized «how hard it is to find someone who knows how to trim bangs without making you look like you did in your 3^rd grade school picture.» Her review was spot on. I was going to an event for work and I was going for the «I didn’t just get my bangs trimmed» bang trim as she said.
This place was close to my hotel so I strolled on over. I didn’t make an appointment, but they took me right away! I was a little nervous because Katie B. mentioned that Mark trimmed her bangs, but I got Sam. Sam did a perfect job too! I was having issues with my bangs being too long and poofy in the humidity. Sam fixed them right up! I am so happy still.
I feel like a big jerk because they have a $ 25 minimum for credit cards. The reason I had no cash is Bank of America’s fault — 100% their fault. not mine ;) They spelled my name wrong on my debit card so I never activated it, never received a new one, and when I stopped at the one near AR there were 5 people behind the counter, but no one was available to help me. I left after standing aimlessly around and deeply apologize to Sam that I had to use my card and was unable to leave a tip. I believe it came out to $ 10.25 for the trim. I will be back partly because I am happy with the trim, and partly because I feel guilty about the tip so I will come back and make it up. Hopefully this review will suffice in the meantime.

I have been a customer of Rodger at A.R. Hair Salon for many years. He has always been great with color and my latest haircut is a complete success. It looks professional but slightly edgy, it gets me noticed and I have been getting complements from both men and women. What is even more important, it is easy to maintain, and I can style it myself at home. I am so pleased that I decided to write this review. Thank you Rodger.

Sam cuts my hair here about every 5 – 6 weeks and it’s aways the best. For me, I just want a fast, friendly enough and good-​looking hair cut. I don’t want a lot of chit chat, a long wait, or anything like that. I just want to get in and get out. Sam makes the haircut fast and efficient and I get lots of compliments on my hair each time! The place is so tiny too, so naturally there isn’t a lot of waiting.

I went to the location on 26^th/​8avenue. Mark says he works at this location sometimes, and mostly at AR on 17^th. Request him. Talented, fun & understanding. I had a few hours to kill in Chelsea and had been needing a haircut. I called a lot of places that were a bit more expensive and according to Unilocal — better quality — but they were booked. I was 100% satisfied with my experience at AR and after doing the research, found it to be the same or cheaper than other salons in the area. Clean, they offered wine, everyone was understanding of my specific request. I will go back.

I was about 10 mins early so the receptionist, who was friendly, asked if she could get me a drink. I sat with my tea while waiting for my appointment & Leena (sp?) came out right on time. She was showed me to the room & let me change. I noticed the floor was FILTHY. There was literally hair every where. There was even a long pubic hair on the first piece of cloth that she was going to use for my Brazilian! I have gone to many places through Lifebooker & have always felt that I’ve gotten a great deal. But here i felt like I’d made a terrible mistake & that it made sense why their offer was so cheap. Before I (reluctantly) got undressed & on the table I threw the top waxing cloth with the giant pube away.
Leena came in & told me I had bought the honey wax but it was sticky & hurt so I should upgrade to the chocolate wax. I said every Brazilian hurt & that I was fine using the honey wax after a discussion that went on a little too long. Then she put my tea on the disgusting floor saying «I’ll put this here for now» before getting started. Nice.
I’ve been getting Brazilians for a while now & know there are several «hair styles», shall we say. Here’s the wiki definition so Leena, who thinks she knows everything, can educate herself:
Unfortunately, despite me trying to discuss the style I wanted, Leena became argumentative & did as she pleased. It became actually kind of upsetting so I told her it wasn’t that deep, to finish & then we’d never have to see each other again. But apparently Leena likes to argue in that little filthy room because she remained combative & difficult for the remainder of my wax. And the more angry she got, the rougher the waxing was! Then, when we were finally finished, she went outside the door & continued to rant to the manager! Grow up, girlfriend. If you want to complain about a customer at least have the common sense to wait until the customer’s gone, especially if you’re hoping for a tip. I told her & the manager exactly this. I also suggested that they clean the room since it was unsanitary & the most vile thing I’ve ever seen before I ran out of there. I will NEVER go near here again or recommend it to anyone. I am baffled by the high ratings that others have given this nasty salon. There are plenty if little great finds here in the city. Don’t trust your kitty to this groomer!

I love this salon. Everyone is always so helpful and the haircuts aren’t expensive. I’ve been stopped on the street to have my haircut complimented. And one time I got my hair dyed and the next day after washing it I didn’t like the color. They fixed it at no charge and gave me a glass of wine. :)

I got a great, affordable, quick and easy haircut here last night with Sam. I hadn’t gotten a cut in months since the AR location on 23^rd St. closed. My hair (straight) had gotten pretty long and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I took in a celebrity hair photo and he gave me a trim and some layers. He also listened when I said I really didn’t want it blow-​dried and styled. I appreciate that. Some stylists insist on blow-​drying and styling, which I hate! A $ 40 cut with long hair, and they gave me the first-​time discount of 10%. What’s not to like?

I’m very picky when it comes to my hair. I’ve been going there for more than 2 years now. Vicky is my regular stylist and she’s so good to me but all of them show my hair a lot of attention, which I often crave;). They’re all awesome and I’ve referred a bunch of my friends there who’ve each left quite satisfied.

This is for the AR location on 8^th and 25^th Street. Returned several times for trim and blow dry. Due to time constraints had my hair colored twice, big mistake. First too dark and second time too red. Not the best colorist.
Will likely return for waxing.

Friendly, professional & honest people work here. I’m very picky with who touches my hair, I was impressed, I went into the salon with no idea how my new hair cut would come out… Flawless! :)

I’ve been going to mark for as long as I can remember and he’s THE BEST! I don’t even have to tell him what to do with my hair anymore. I walk in, sit down, he cuts away, we laugh, I check out his touchas and then some and then I go home! I mean for 26 bucks for guys cut you get hot eye candy with him, a great cut and a they even offer you a glass of wine!

I’m giving AR 5 stars because as a New York woman with bangs I understand how hard it is to find someone who knows how to trim bangs without making you look like you did in your 3^rd grade school picture. It’s hard to master the art of the «I didn’t just get my bangs trimmed» bang trim look but Mark can! He’s great and very friendly. I usually call the day I need to get it done and they can usually see me within the hour. Since I go about every 3 weeks they’re very accommodating.
Love this place and will always come here as long as I can!

I don’t give 5 stars here because it’s hard to get excited about a men’s haircut. That being said, this place is really quite good. The folks are friendly, they offer wine when you get in, and they do the job quickly. For $ 25 you can’t beat a wash, cut, style, and cup of wine.
They accept credit cards but not for the tip, so make sure you have a few bucks in cash to give.
