History

Established in 1995.

It all began in 1980…

when (2) young boys from post soviet republic started working as apprentices under the cultivation of their grandfather. Mastering the art of tailoring was a family institution and starting their own business was a tradition adapted from their great grandfather. For 10 years they grew and committed to a business that serviced all dignitaries, officials and persons of prestige. After a decade long tenure, the decision was made to relocate the business to America.

Subsequently, since 1990, they have been in business and have been thriving; servicing the tri-​state area ever since.

Updating my review from last year. I now see what all the «meh» reviews are about.
Two suit jackets brought in for basic alterations… just needed the sleeve length shortened. Both took two or three tries, and neither is really done well despite all the re-do’s. The problem is that the tailor never once measured both my arms. Everyone’s arms are slightly different lengths, hence why tailors typically measure both. Even the arm he did measure, it was more of an eyeball, followed by drawing a massive smudge of chalk on the arm showing him where to cut. No wonder the results were so imprecise.
Also…I have dropped off a few pairs of pants for basic hems, and they don’t even iron them when they are done. I suppose this isn’t really required, but 1. it’s standard practice and 2. how much care are you taking in your work when you return pants to someone that are a wrinkled mess stuffed into a plastic bag?
The more I go in, the more I get the feeling they just take zero pride in their work. On to find a new tailor in the area…

This shop is pretty standard and provides the type of work you’d expect for the price. If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive tailor, Alex Tailor Shop is the place to go to.
They have a quick turn around but will charge a rush fee if you need something back same (or next) day. I used to work nearby and would come in whenever the crotch in my pants wore out to get fixed ASAP.
The two tailor’s that work here are brothers (and one of them is Alex – no idea which one though). They were finally friendly and welcoming to me once they knew I too was a ‘member of the tribe’ and that both our families come from a ‘shtetl’ in the middle of no where in Eastern Europe.
Come here if you know how you like your pants, jackets, suits, and shirts tailored. I usually have to provide some direction (taper the leg this much, release waist this much, don’t touch the sleeve length, etc) but the finished product comes out solidly.

These guys are great! They did an amazing job on my coat’s lining that other tailors wouldn’t even touch, and they were very nice about it. Really like their attitude and business practices! Will be brining more coats to them next week.

They get 5 starts for tailoring, 1 star for business practices.
I bring these guys all my serious alterations, because they’re very good at it. They often try to discourage me from the bigger jobs («just buy a new one that fits!») but I ignore this and have them do the work, and so far have been pleased by the quality and the value.
But do yourself a favor and call before picking up your job, because there is no guarantee it will be done. And if it’s not done, they probably won’t bother calling you.
It seems impossible to impress upon them that their customers’ time is valuable and that no one likes making a round trip from Brooklyn to be shrugged at and told to come back tomorrow.

Alex Tailor Shop is GREAT! I have been going to them for years, and they are super professional and understand how to alter anything. I brought them my wedding dress (originally made in India) and they were able to take it in 2 INCHES a few days before my wedding! I was so nervous and they calmed my nerves and days later I had a wedding dress that fit! My husband also brings in all his dress shirts & they do a wonderful job. Whether it’s simple or complex — I highly recommend them!

Another area Business I have used since before I became a resident. Alex has always been on top of his game. I used to just take him suits I purchased from Century 21, I think they used to pay the sales guys to send clients over but who cares I found them and I stay with them, we have about 5 tailors in the area, mostly the local cleaners. but the consistency and speed I get from Alex keeps me a loyal customer for over 15 years.

I was sooo relieved to find Alex’s shop on Unilocal the week before my brother-in-law’s wedding! I had ordered my bridesmaid dress before I found out I was pregnant, so when it arrived I was worried about the fit since I would only be gaining weight until the wedding. I was apprehensive since the guy (Alex?) said it would be difficult to let the dress out since there was limited fabric to work with, but the dress fit really well and I got a lot of compliments. I took one star off since originally they told me Monday at 6, then Monday at 6, then Tuesday afternoon (even though I said I would only be around Wednesday. I ended up being able to go on Tuesday afternoon and it was still in the Wednesday pile. Luckily I had time to keep going back and forth but these Wall Street customers may not.

Not sold on these guys. Gave me one price where I asked them to press my items also but when I went back, they could not do two items and charged me a very similar amount anyway. Took everything home and two of the items were not done properly. Went back to ask them to correct it, of course they second guessed me but in any case, they corrected for free then when I came home to check out their work, they had left all sorts of string coming out of my pieces where they had made the correction. Sloppy work. Nice enough guys. Would keep them as back up but for sloppy work and not being able to even do what I asked for some things AND the fact that they close at 6pm, I don’t know.

Took a coat in to shorten the sleeves, get hemmed and tears in the lining repaired. It was $ 70, which I expected for that amount of work, but the lining was in terrible shape when I took it home. Several rips unrepaired, and the repair to the sleeve lining left the sleeve so small I can’t wear it with sweaters, or shirt sleeves rolled up.

Had a beautiful Richard Tyler opera coat that was a size 8⁄10 sized down to a size 2! They were meticulous, precise and my coat looked as if it was tailor made to fit me. I have brought it suits as well, an silk designer couture gowns as well. They are worth going to, and I am grateful that I found them again after they moved from their 2nd fl location after 9⁄11.

Generally speaking the work has been acceptable (the only reason I give them 2 stars instead of 1), but I have NEVER received my clothing even remotely on time. Moreover, they don’t bother calling to tell you it’s been delayed.
I understand that things get busy and sometimes things have to be pushed back, but wasting customer time is not okay.
On my last visit (and it will be the last) I intentionally showed up three days after my items were to be finished and they hadn’t even started on them. Nor had they bothered to call me. They then hastily tried to do them in 30 minutes, screwed up one of the shirts massively and had to redo it as I waited. The other shirts are okay, but clearly rushed. The 20% discount did not make up for the bad service, waste of time, and mediocre work.
I really don’t recommend using these guys.

Tailoring 4⁄5: I had my beaded one shoulder Adrianna Papell taken in and shortened. The price was $ 67. They did a great job. I asked for the beads to be secured, which was done. I was also told my dress would be done a certain day, which it wasn’t.

These guys are great. Very affordable. Sometimes you do need to do repeat fittings, but I’ve done that many times at the fanciest clothing stores in the city, so I don’t fault them for that.

I have brought dresses to them, jeans, skirts… you name it and they get it done (properly). Just as the other reviews stated, the guys are courteous, honest and their prices are reasonable.

I brought in two pairs of dress pants for hemming; I wasnt too happy when I brought them home: you can tell that not a lot of time were dedicated into hemming the pants by the handwork, sure enough, the linework came off just after two wearings.
There was no attention to the details.

I brought a full suit here — I needed the jacket a bit tighter around the waist and the pants were too loose around the legs. I got both fixed perfectly for just $ 48, which from my experience with tailors in NYC is a fantastic deal. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because the two guys who work there aren’t the most outgoing bunch — there was a quite a bit of awkward silence. Not exactly a huge problem though, I went there for a tailored suit, not conversation.
Oh, and I told them I would need it sometime «next week» when I gave it to them. I walked into the store on that Monday letting them know I could pick it up later that day (since every tailor I’ve used has never actually had the work done until I confirmed that yes, I am still alive and want my suit) and to my surprise, one of the guys plucked it off the rack and said it was ready… bonus points.

Once upon a time in Armenia, there were two brothers, quite dissimilar looking, one might note. They each wondered if the other was in fact their brother, but concluded that they should come to New York and set up shop in the trade that had been handed down to them from generation to generation. The practical-​minded brother wanted to name their store ‘Alterer’. But the other insisted on ‘Alex Tailor’ to communicate a broader offering …
I invariably trust the brothers to hem my jeans and dress slacks, replace a broken button or even adjust the sleeves. They are soft-​spoken and talented. And their services are fairly priced. I would likely not buy the tailored shirts they have on display. And I would likely not trust them for major changes to my three-​piece Brioni suit (not that I have one). But if the alteration is relatively straightforward, and you are not looking for rapid turnaround, by all means go to Alex Tailor Shop.

These guys are great. Not only do they do great work, but they are humble and modest. The two brothers are friendly and will remember you after a few visits. They are consistent and their prices are pretty on par with what other tailors in the city charge.
Only note: They often cannot get stuff done in time, so if you have an event on Saturday that you need that dress tailored for, ask for it to be ready by Thursday or Friday.

Let me be frank, I am not a tailoring expert. I’m not a fashion affectionado. I’m also not (by New York standards) all that particular about my clothing.
Having said that, I am also cursed with an awkward body type which has led to dozens of fitted dress shirts and hemmed pants over the years. As such, I like to think I’m making this review from the average person’s perspective.
This place is impressive. It’s a tiny shop about a block away from Century 21. I bought my suit, walked it over, dropped it off, ate lunch, and picked it up all hemmed and ready to go 30 minutes later. The stitching is up to code as far as I’m concerned and the staff was very nice. They had a steady stream of patrons and have been there for years which leads me to believe others also find their services acceptable. It was a mere $ 12 to get my suit pants hemmed — a price that beat my favorite tailor in San Diego.
Next time I need something tailored or hemmed (and there will always be a «next time» — damn you, Genetics!), I’m coming to this place.
