Founding partner Stephen A. Agus, Esq. was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1976. Prior to that time and during his years in law school, which he attended at night, Mr. Agus worked as a Recovery Adjuster for The Atlantic Companies in New York. Responsible for the filing of claims and successful settlement of ocean and inland marine recoveries for more than three years at The Atlantic Companies provided Mr. Agus with a sound education for his first job as a lawyer with Purrington & McConnell (later to be named Purrington, McConnell & Agus), where he became a partner in his first year. One of the first cases handled by Mr. Agus at Purrington & McConnell was the successful appeal of a case that was to become a landmark for ocean marine recoveries: Vana Trading v. METTE SKOU, 551 F.2d 100 (2nd Cir. 1976). Vana re-established the vitality of an ancient principle of ocean cargo law, that in a case of multiple causes of loss, the shifting burdens of proof would require the ocean carr
