116th Street El Barrio Subway Station

Not much to mention regarding subway station. I mean it’s right in the heart of the El Barrio section of East Harlem so the most I can say is that it is very multi cultural from Puerto Rican’s, Mexican’s, Black American and some caucasians as well.

I take the #6 train here to El Barrio on those days I want to walk around the hood and experience some Hispanic eats, Dominican bakeries, little shops and stands offering many types of cheap ethnic foods and items with a Latin flair.
Love all the street vendors in the area selling all types of stuff off on carts. Churros, pork rinds, juice stands, cut up mangos, flavored ices, etc.
The one bad thing I find about the area near this subway stop is the lack of healthy food options as the area is loaded up with fatty fast food joints. It’s the one part of Manhattan that really needs a renovation and could use funding to revitalize the area to help out those who live up there.
If you walk around the area and look hard you can find some authentic and tasty Spanish/​Latin/​Mexican/​Dominican food spots to have a good meal, but even those are not the healthiest yet they flavors are terrific.
Also offers a quick walk over to the shopping complex that Costco is in where I have a membership. Basically, this station is a decently kept subway stop for the #6 train to the neighborhood.

The 6 train stops in this part of town. Welcome to Spanish Harlem or SpaHa (how Real State Agents like to call it). Once you get off this station and head out, you’ll probably think you’re in Latin America and definitely NOT in NYC. You’ll see more signs in Spanish than in English and there are Hispanic (I assume mostly Puerto Rican and Dominican) street vendors selling anything from Fried Pork Rinds (Chicharrones), Churros, Mangos with Chile, Horchata, Tamales, Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, and the list goes on and on. The area around the station seems like a pretty busy intersection. You got a Mexican Restaurant ‘El Aguila’, an Associated Supermarket, a Spanish Pharmacy, a Pizza Parlor, a Fried Chicken Place, Beauty Supply stores, a Domino’s Pizza, a Dominican Restaurant, Cuchifritos place, Chase and Popular Banks, Taco Bell/​Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts, Wendy’s, and many Mexican eateries.
Other than the fact that the area around the station SERIOUSLY lacks in affordable HEALTHY food (there are NO large-​scale Delis or Salad Bar places in this part of town), you’ll find PLENTY of Mexican eateries as well as places that serve greasy and fatty yet cheap and quite tasty Dominican food.
I suggest you start with El Aguila for your Hispanic food adventure as this is no Taco Bell, but the REAL deal and do start with the Pernil or Roast Pork if you want a taste of the Islands.
