Taikushink School of Karate teaches Kyokushin karate. It was founded in 1990 and opened in this location in 1994. This dojo is a part of NAKO– the North American Kyokushin Organization, under Kancho Henri-Oh. Kyokushin is a very practical, well-respected style of full contact martial art, with very high standards. Sparring is alive, and the workouts are tough. It is a martial art that provides strength, confidence, and discipline for mind, body, and spirit. While children do train in Kyokushin and develop great character from doing so, this martial art is also very much for adults, and is best known for it’s full contact knockdown tournaments and 100 man kumite(where a karateka fights 100 people in a row, 2 minute rounds each, with no padding, real, hard contact, and no breaks.) Students of this martial art also learn respect and responsibility for their communities and others. This is a style for those who wish to protect, defend, and learn the budo of living the martial way. It is not a style for bullies and thugs. Kyokushin is a traditional Japanese martial art. I know one of the students here well, and have spoken with Shihan Woodruff– a kind, humble man who is very knowledgeable. I have heard that he is very disciplined on the mat, and expects the same of his students, as it should be. This is a good school with rigorous rank requirements. You cannot buy rank here. You must truly earn it, and that is a very good, valuable thing. The instructors here have an excellent lineage, and I recommend giving them a try if you are serious about learning a solid, practical, strong martial art full of really good people. As we say in Kyokushin, OSU!
