Grew up in NP and recently moved back — just for the sandwiches! I grew up in the area and have been to all the local spots, this one is the best. Best sloppy joe in New Jersey.

Great sandwiches and the best Sloppy Joes in the area now that Hill City has folded and Towne has gone downhill.

We were visiting NJ from Virginia and stopped into Avenue Deli for lunch. We ordered a couple BLT’s and couple turkey sandwiches. The food was outstanding and we enjoyed sitting out front at a table on the sidewalk. Everyone was very helpful and polite. We are moving to New Providence and plan to eat here often.

Best Sloppy Joe ever!!! Really everything is very good, food is legit big time. This place is the original New Providence Deli. Oldest deli in town run by original family, back when shopping center was just a farm. That’s it for the history lesson.

The definition of a classic New Jersey deli. Their sloppy joes on pump are magical. The NP special comes in at a close second. The décor in this place is nonexistent, but I think that’s what makes it so amazing.

NJ Sloppy Joe. Never heard of it. Some cold cuts and cheese between bread with some cole slaw, doesn’t sound like much(in fact, that’s not what we call sloppy joe where I come from). But, something about it make you keep wanting more. I must have gained 10 lbs since I moved here. No ambiance and no seating(except for a few chairs outside), so take your sandwich and go hog wild in the privacy of your own home.

I picked up a turkey sandwiches here and I had them make them the way I like it. Everything was very fresh. The hoagie roll was amazing. When I arrived there I saw them making a tray of Sloppy Joe’s for someone. The next time I go I am definitely getting one of those sloppy Joe’s. They looked really great!

Don’t expect to be blown away from the interior decorating — but that isn’t why you are here is it? Do yourself a major favor and order the turkey joe on rye, grab a bag of chips and prepare to enter deli Heaven. This place delivers the flavor.

My co-workers and I refer to this place as «Heavenly Deli» I legit had to google the actual name of the place so I could write the review. Honestly, I could have left the review at that sentence… This deli is GREAT. Pastrami, Corned Beef, Roast Beef. All to die for. Maybe get a double — Pastrami, Corned Beef, toss some Pepper Jack Cheese on there and bacon. Heat it up, add some of their sauce(Thousand Island/Russian, I forget the distinguisher) and do you have a killer sandwich. Their subs are great, and when I am feeling a bit more health conscious, their chef salads are also great. They definitely use higher class meat than say the Subway across the street. I have not had any of their hot sandwiches. Whenever I go, I really want to try one, but that pastrami and corned beef is too hard to resist.

Let’s just say«I never met a sandwich there I didn’t like» and being a retired Deli owner I love everything from their Pork Roll, Egg & Cheese to their Super Sloppy Joe’s. & Subs for the Quality of the products they use and the service their employees give Major Kudos to Avenue Deli. and with all that there’s even more, Their prices are Lower then other delis in the area with that being said I mean how can you go wrong. 4 ¾ stars because No one gets a 5 star Rating when I Judge, that’s just the way I roll. as Arnold would say«I’ll be back.» Put Avenue Deli on your must try list, you won’t be Sorry.

Inexpensive sandwiches, all are delicious. Every time I am in there, there is always a line, and that’s okay. Their pastrami is really good. They give you a lot of meat for your dollar. All they really need to do is put a grill in the FRONT of the deli. Those poor peopel have to walk back and forth to heat things up. Everything is SOOOOOGOOOD! My mouth is watering by just talking about it.

Great Sloppy Joes and The New Providence Special is amazing. I have always been pleased with the service and the quality, for whatever I had ordered. Check this place out for sure if you are in the area, they have been doing this for many years at a consistently high level.

This place is great. They make authentic NJ subs and sandwiches that I fantasize about from my cabin in the Mojave desert. I say authentic because the Sloppy Joe sandwich was created in this area of NJ, to the acknowledgement and pride of many. I used to order trays of Sloppy Joes at the request of my IT group when I worked in New Providence, and because I was a vegetarian I would order one with no meat. Can you imagine all that rich creamy slaw, sauce and thin sliced swiss oozing and melding together protein-less between slices of soft jewish rye? This is the level I stooped to in order to make it veg-friendly. And I regret NOTHING. I’ve been back in the past few years to order subs and turkey joes from Avenue Deli. Their subs have fresh crusty bread, thin shaved iceburg, onions and tomatoes, along with whatever meat/cheese you desire and a healthy dose of oil and vinegar showered on top of the lettuce at the end, topped with a dash of oregano, salt and pepper. Perfection! Not much seating inside(I think there might be one table), but there are a couple outdoor tables. This is mostly a wait in line, order, pay and go home with your brown bag type of place.

On second though, I suppose this place is pretty average. About 50% of the time in the last 2 – 3 months, the bread has been tough/borderline stale. That’s enough for me to drop the rating. I only ever get one thing, turkey and provolone, probably because I’m scared to try anything else, especially the mystery prepared foods in the chafing dishes. Also, the people that work here are not particularly friendly. The one girl/woman barely acknowledges your existance, kind of mumbles under her breath, just seems annoyed in general. Not asking for a smile and a handshake, but for Christ’s sake.

I make sandwhiches at home, and they are good, but sometimes I just need a deli sandwhich. I need that shredded lettuce and kaiser roll or hero instead of the broing slices from the bag. I need that sloppy helping of oil and vinegar that makes all my sandwhich toppings slide out the other end when I bite into it. Avenue Deli makes damn good sandwhiches. Period. Could they maybe update the place and paint or give it some life, sure. Could they do something awesome and attractive with their deli counter and sandwhich making station, I suppose. But let’s face it, they arent here for ambiance. They are here to give you a SUB when you need it. I go ther faithfully. I also like that in the mornings if you order a breakfast sandwhich, they actually use real eggs and bacon to make it, not some microwaved liquid and pre cooked meat. The people there are pleasant and kind and it doestn hurt they have a huge NYGMEN player on days of the games or play off time… fine taste indeed.

Good sandwiches at good prices. Everything is average: bread/cold cuts/tuna/add ons… no seating inside so you have to take it to go. Old feel inside. Plenty of parking in the back(back entrance). Nothing over the top and on par with most deli’s in area.

If you’re looking for standard breakfast fare, this is a good go to place. At least they have real eggs not like the competition across the street(noah bagels which has awesome bagels but no grill). there isn’t really seating area so did a take out. i do remember they have a few seats outside during summer time. got eggs on a roll and love their rolls. though they forgot my onions i will definitely give them another try next time. their sloppy joe is a little more on the mustardy side. good bread.
