Nice shop. Small in size but has a lot of records in a compact space. Worth dropping in if you are seeking new releases. Only have a few used LPs but I think they are trying to move CDs around to have more space for vinyl.

The record store on Bourbon Street resembling the size of my bedroom was a discovery for the ages. The selection outdoes what most stores do with a proper space. The layout is effective to the consumer, forcing you to dig through bins, to ultimately find the one.
On Saturday, the one ended up being Kyuss’ Welcome to Sky Valley. A stoner rockers dream album fell into my hands like a heaven sent gift from the clouds. It was a fitting reward for the thorough treasure hunt I partook in. When I made my way to the counter, Scott (correct me if I’m wrong) exclaimed, «No way. I didn’t know we still had Kyuss!» It’s a classic record store owner’s dilemma: Selling vinyl you want others to appreciate, yet it’s difficult to let some of them go.
Skully’z also has a kick-​ass collection of cd’s and dvd’s. And the man behind the counter genuinely loves records and conversing with customers. Make sure you get to know the humble store owner. Trust me, this is worth putting down those hand grenades and hurricanes.

What a great place to shop for music.
It looks like they’ve got a little bit of everything … CDs DVDs … and vinyl.
Last year I stopped in and told the owner I was interested in something electronic, dark, and kind of trancy. He immediately recommended the latest Boards of Canada CD «Tomorrow’s Harvest». He was spot on with that recommendation and when I stopped in this year I bought another couple of their CDs.
I’ll be back next year!

Best record store out there. Yes it’s small but the dude behind the front counter was super helpful. I picked up some jazz and punk records only cost me $ 25 bucks for 5.

Don’t let it’s size fool you. Skully’z is a great little shop that has a good selection of indie /​punk /​alternative. The staff is super friendly and will gladly play a used record for you if you’re concerned of it’s condition or if you just want to see if you like it. Prices are slightly cheaper than usual making it a great stop if you are in the area.

I almost don’t want to tell people about this small 8×8 remarkable find. It’s amazing and has a GREAT selection of vinyl, cd’s, and movies. Unique, one of a kind picks. Stuff you probably won’t see again and some that are familiar for more main stream. The owner, Scott was very helpful and actually gave us some great pointers on NOLA stuff to do. A plus all the way around.

Can’t recommend this shop enough. Friendly staff, awesome collection with tons of variety, and the location is awesome. Definitely hit this place up before going to Peaches Records, they have better stuff for less money.

Had a chance to get back in and this time around I was able to do some shopping. Erin was behind the counter and she was a delight: very helpful and knowledgeable. Picked up some Hurray for the Riff Raff and some Stooges Brass Band. The shop is stocked with all kinds of genres despite the tiny size, though you may have to climb over some stuff to get to some spots. Vinyl focus, to go with the times, but also lots of CDs and even a decent, if random, DVD selection. Head to Euclid or LMF if you want to dig for hours, but don’t overlook Skully’z!

Good things come in small packages. Skully’z is my kind of vinyl store. Great Selection and Great Customer Service. I was in town for a conference and had one day to hit up the Quarter for some Vinyl Shopping. This space is very small and the Vinyl was located in records bins all along the floor. Not a big deal to me. I spent over an hour in this store and came out with three must have records. One of those records was given to me at half price by the owner! He’s super rad and has great taste. If you have to visit one record store in New Orleans, make it Skully’z.

Sweet little record store just on the outskirts of the French Quarter. I can’t believe what they packed into this place: used CDs, new CDs, a variety of leftover Record Store Day 45s, as well as some new and used vinyl. I picked up a rare bootleg of a 1984 U2 show in here in excellent condition at a reasonable price.
Though it sways toward the indie crowd, there’s a ton to be found in this tiny store. It only gets 4 out of 5 stores because of its sheer size – can’t really stuff much into a space like this, but for what it has, it’s one of the nicest record stores in New Orleans. The merchandise is clean, in great condition, and organized. Thumbs up.

Small shop. Nice vibe in there. Good quality stuff, both used and new. It’s location is great if you’re in the French Quarter. The thing that knocks it down a notch as that they carry too many different things. The store is probably 25′ x 8′. They carry CDs, DVDs, vinyl, magazines. There are too many varieties of things so not much stock of any one type of thing. But who knows, you might just find what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for vinyl, you can look through their entire stock in 10 minutes. But it’s worth visiting and the staff is friendly and helpful.

What an awesome little record store. Being from out of town and having no interest in visiting Bourbon Street (I am not a drunk asshole or part of a frat party. I actually wanted to visit NOLA for its people culture, music and food, so shoot me) this little place forced me onto the street. His music collection is forward thinking and diverse. My guess is the average tourist would not know what to do with his music. He even sells records. I bet this is more of a local destination. I give him credit though for being in a high traffic area. A guy has to make a living, and we know in hawking music these days, that is a tough sell. Please go support him.

I patronized Skully’z during a brief visit to New Orleans, so it’s worth noting that my experience is only representative of a single day of New Orleans vinyl shopping. Now that we’re all on the same page, let’s move on.
I had only one day to spend in New Orleans, and like any tourist with limited time in a city full of history, my sole objective was to find some good vinyl records. I have immense respect for any store that still sells vinyl in this day & age, so I will not disparage any establishment by name. Having said that, my first few stops were pretty discouraging. Nice enough selections, but everything, new & used, just felt terribly overpriced. And by terribly overpriced, I mean each record was priced at LEAST $ 10 higher than I would consider fair. I was about to submit to the fact that New Orleans vinyl was just too rich for my blood, when all of a sudden I stumbled upon Skully’z while wandering down Bourbon St. A tiny little place that instantly gave me that cozy, friendly record store feeling. I begin flipping through the bins… JOY. A great selection of new & used LPs, all at the right price. Skully’z used selection was noticeably smaller than some of the other shops, but the limited size didn’t stop me from finding several great titles that, once again, were priced just right. The gentlemen behind the register was super friendly & helpful. PERFECT.
Skully’z definitely seems more focused on newer indie music than any other store I found in the area. So if you’re looking to find one of those old authentic Louisiana blues or jazz LPs, a few other stores might be more likely to have what you’re looking for… but be assured, you’ll pay a premium for them. However, if you’re like me and you’re just looking to pick up some great new records at a totally fair price, I HIGHLY recommend Skully’z.

So, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m kind of a weird person. If someone was to come up to me and ask me what my favorite place on Bourbon St. was I would probably not tell them any of the high priced bars, or seedy strip-​clubs, but rather this little one-​room record store a block or so down away from most of the craziness that is Bourbon.
Unlike Louisiana Music Factory or Jim Russel’s (both fantastic in their own rights) Skully’s focuses more on the modern vinyl movement. Of course you can find an oldie floating around in one of the bins, but I guarantee you that it is probably a modern reprint, or someone who is still hugely significant to the current music scenes.
When you walk in there is a small counter on the right, with some of the higher priced items on inaccessible shelves for safe keeping. with the exception of the center record display everything above your thighs is CDs/​DVSs, with a subterranean selection of records in milk crates.
The CD collection is a standard who’s who of music, and not just the major albums, but EPs and singles to pad your collection. You may be able to find some «mainstream» artists lacing the shelves, but for the most part the artists tend to be the lesser known non-​top 40 artists.
The vinyl selection at Skully’z is what really gets my mouth watering. Over the course of a few visits I was able to snag every single Godspeed You! Black Emperor release on vinyl. Their selection is always changing. They have a few bins for general music, a bin or two dedicated to punk, D&B, techno, and local flair. I am always able to go in and find a couple of records that catch my eye.
The people behind the counter are all pretty knowledgeable about their selection and quite friendly. I have never had a bad experience with shopping here. Granted, you have the typical judging looks as they ring up your purchase and they see what music you listen to, but I would consider that the quintessential aspect of shopping at a local record store.
While the store’s small physical size keeps you from feeling like you are on the cover of Entroducing (if you don’t know what I am talking about please for Pete’s sake, go to wikipedia and look up DJ Shadow) it is quite a pleasant record shopping experience, and I guarantee you will find something.
