Established in 1995.

Smith’s idea tapped into a real need in the marketplace. «I saw that we could provide the same results of a traditional spa in less time and a whole lot less money,» Smith says. «Our industry was changing, demand for tanning was diminishing and demand for day spa services was increasing. It became very clear to me that we needed to reposition our brand to become a more successful franchise and to better serve our customers. We broke into an untapped niche with the Planet Beach Contempo Spa concept.» The company is now positioned to turn the day spa industry on its ear by making spa services, traditionally considered luxury purchases, available at extremely affordable prices to massive amounts of customers. Business Owner

Stephen Smith had the Planet Beach concept in mind when he passed by a neon sign in front of a defunct uptown New Orleans tanning salon in 1994. The sign said «Electric Beach.» He had been operating healthclubs and gyms for years and understood the value of helping people live healthy lives, but the gym business was limited. He wanted to help people feel better about themselves and needed to think of another, more unique way. Smith decided to open his first salon and bought the uptown location. Since funds were tight, he could only change one of the words on the sign outside. «Beach» stayed, and he replaced «Electric» with «Planet» to represent the desire to escape to the beach and have an «otherworldly» and relaxing experience.

The first tanning spa — and the spas that followed — were an overnight success. The Planet Beach franchise system grew to several hundred locations and many foreign countries. The company is still based in New Orleans and he is still the owner of Uptown.

This place is awesome. Everyone who works there are always so pleasant and ready to accommodate a customers needs. It is for everyone, not just the young. The red light therapy is so good for circulation. Hydration therapy gets out all of those toxins especially if you are hungover. lol. Try it out!!!

The original and best location!
Most recently I’d just been using the UV beds to fix embarrassing farmer’s tans, but the «spa» offerings are what’s really amazing about Planet Beach. They had (hopefully still do) a massage chair that felt a few light years better than any other I’ve ever tried — probably better even than any lovers I’ve ever had, to be honest! It has cuffs that inflate around your legs and arms and a serious neck-​kneading surface. While you sit there for 15 minutes of bliss you also get a Luminous Facial, which is infrared therapy. I was skeptical but I think it really did help fade my acne scars.
The reason I’m only giving Planet Beach four stars is because their staff, while super friendly, always tries to sell and upsell their products. I’ve bought so many moisturizers, etc. because they’re such nice people and I felt like I’d hurt their feelings if I just said no after someone spent 5 minutes of their time telling me all about the evils of mineral oil and describing the miraculous results I’d see from each of the skincare products they carry.
But yes, to wrap it up, I love this Planet Beach! And they’re always improving.

They have great beds, but if you’re going in just for a tan, you’re depriving yourself and your skin. The only thing I haven’t done in a Planet Beach spa in my five years as a member is sunless tanning.
The hydration capsule is my lifeline. This saves my skin during ultra dry months and prolongs my tan in spring and summer. Plus it’s relaxing. And I find it’s great for a hangover.
The Slimpod is a great concept. But I just don’t love it enough to stick with it. My sensitive skin doesn’t like an oven. I did notice a decrease in bloat and an increase in skin tightness. So if you can hangout in an oven for an hour at a time, give it a shot.
Red light (yellow and blue as well) facials are great. Trust me. I’m 31. I regularly get early 20s. I know skin care. I’m a licensed cosmetologist, and I’ve been using proper skincare for as long as I can recall. I also hate having my face poked and prodded, so lights are better than hands.
Just give it all a try and figure out what’s best for you. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. More so here than at other locations I’ve visited.

Do not to go to this planet beach location. The spray tan machine does not work. Twice I paid for a spray tan and twice the machine didn’t work and I was left with absolutely no results. I’ve been getting spray tans for ten years so I know the rules about showering. Unfortunately this was not the reason it did not work. I was a very white girl for two weddings I was in. Not cool. What’s even more uncool was when I went back to let planet beach redeem itself, the manager Fletcher accused me of just wanting free tans. This is not the case. I promise I would have preferred be tan for the wedding. This establishment is trashy and gives other Planet Beach locations a bad name.

I was on a monthly plan that I was told was canceled by the clerk on duty, but they continued to bill me for months then refused to refund more that one payment. The manager did not return phone calls he said he would, then he still refused after I recorded a phone call with his assistant manager saying she canceled both accounts billing my card and would refund the two payments. Often when we would come into this site they were unprofessional and once we can’t in and they had all been drinking openly during business hours and were clearly drunk. There are plenty of places to get a tan… Do yourself a favor and go some where else.

2 stars is a joke.
Slim capsule and hydration station are the absolute best inventions ever! If you get this product called «PB heat» and buy a reusable sauna suit, it will take the slim capsule to an entirely new level! (PB heats also works great in the hydration station.)
Literally after a 40 minute session in the slim capsule, I had lost 3 pounds! Plus they make your skin super soft!

This is the only planet beach il ever use again if I can help it! They have the best spray machine, pb glow that is above and beyond any mystic or spray I’ve ever gotten! Numerous bed and spa machines, and the staff really knows how to make you look your best!

I wanted to look good for an upcoming wedding and get tan! Its a little pricey for just tanning they do have so much more but I was just interested in that. If the prices were lower I would probably get a longer membership but…
The good: The staff is pretty nice. Micheal is always so polite and kind! I feel like I always had questions for him but hes very knowledgeable and knows his stuff! Callie is extremely helpful!!! Beth is so sweet and helpful as well! These 3 def deserve raises! ;) The tanning beds are good i went in white as a ghost and started seeing a difference less than 2 weeks!!! It always looks clean to me and smells of everyone’s lotions lol which isnt necessarily a bad thing! The hours are pretty accommodating and the location is good I feel safe at night going there.
The bad: The prices! The prices of the lotions are anywhere from $ 30−100… idk but $ 100 for lotion is a little much :/​and like i said the actual price to tan as a member is high. Thats really the only complaint i have.
Everything else is great!!! Thank you to the staff there for being so kind and know that its much appreciated!!! :)

I had a membership here and had a TERRIBLE experience trying to cancel my membership. An employee called when my credit card expired to get my updated card. I updated it with her and also told her I’d like to cancel. She gave me a verbal confirmation that I would not be charged again and was very upset when I saw that I was charged the following month. I called the store and they told me that all cancellations have to be in person and paperwork needs to be filled out. So I’m annoyed but ok, I understand. I go into the store and fill out the proper paperwork on the 2nd of the month.
I am charged the following month AGAIN! I call the store and they explain that they have a 30 day cancellation policy and because I didn’t come in on the 1st, that I had to pay this month, none of which was explained to me when I cancelled. I’m in the membership business and I understand 30 day cancellation policies but I also know that they have the ability to waive that in circumstances such as mine (one day late).
I went in to the store again when a manager was on duty and explained the whole situation, asked for a refund and she said there was nothing that could be done. Again, I’m in the business and I know that refunds can be done so when I asked to speak to someone else, her supervisor, she laughed and said the only person above her is CEO of Planet Beach and if I could manage to get in touch with him could I have him call her. Completely rude and unprofessional!
I’m not surprised this place has received other negative reviews based on their cleanliness but I would expect more from a store manager.

Let me be clear: I want to like this place and give it a fair shake, but given my experience with tanning, my review stands as it is.
I think Planet Beach is going through some restructuring and is trying to change. I think the staff are friendly, but sometimes unmotivated. The facilities overall are dirty (there is always dust on the floor and hair everywhere). Usually there are staff members sitting when I come in, or eating and one had her shoes off when I arrived. While these are tiny details, I believe it adds to the overall issue that the staff seems unmotivated. I always clean the beds before I get into them because I don’t trust them to always be clean. There is not a menu of services board or brochure, so one never knows exactly what they can receive here. The management would be wise to invest in something like this so members can see their full range of benefits they can select from.
I have only done the hydration station (which I was not informed of until 3 weeks into my membership), and the tanning beds (both lay down and stand up). I have enjoyed the hydration station, but didn’t realize it was part of my service until much later due to a lack of information presented. The stand up bed is usually what I prefer to do, however, there are many bulbs out in the bed. I informed a staff member and she stated the bulbs were actually on, but just had pressure issues and she was working on changing them. I counted almost 15 out and when I placed my hand on the areas with many bulbs out, they were cool. This is not the norm for a tanning bed or salon. They also state they are «celebrating their current grand re-​opening.» If this were my grand re-​opening, there would not be bulbs out or some of the issues others have addressed previously. Unfortunately, there are very few options in New Orleans.

I used to work in a tanning salon so I know the ins and outs. But it doesn’t take a genius to know a clean bed. Almost positive they don’t clean them after each use, and when they do it’s a half ass clean with a paper towel. They never touch the sides or top of the bed and I have found long hairs in the beds that don’t belong to me. Also, it doesn’t seem like they change the top bulbs. The receptionists/​sales reps are not very kind nor knowledgable. Good thing I only wasted a weeks worth of tanning– this place is gross.

Okay… so this place has it all. massage chairs/​beds, tanning: high pressure, lay down, stand up, toning red light capsule thingie, mystic, FACIAL (which is my personal fav!), hydration bed, slim capsule, and soon to come sauna. Oh and let’s not forget about the friendly staff, one of which became a very good friend of mine outside of the PB walls. The décor has recently been re-​done and it looks fab! My package deal includes all amenities and i love love LOVE it! … headed there now :)

Where do I begin? With all of the amazing, relaxing services offered, I have no clue. Let me though start by saying how friendly, professional and knowledgeable the staff is at Planet Beach Uptown! It is so rare to walk into a business and feel welcomed and to deal with employees that actually know and love what they are selling. I have a great experience every time I visit.. . the only downfall.. . I want to do everything when I am there! :) I guess that is a good thing. This location offers such high quality products for skin care and for their services, that I get the most out of every visit. Not only do they have products for the skin but also nutritional products that are very natural and not like the junk you find in other stores with lots of fillers. I could go on for days but I am done for now! Can’t want for my next visit!

I hate to admit it, I hate to be seen doing it, I hate to be caught by a friend as I’m walking into a TANNING SALON. However, despite my inherent guilt for sitting in UV-​Ray coffins, I will admit that in winter where the lack of sunshine gets me down, or the times of too-​hot-​to-​breathe summer where I find myself slowly losing my tan because it’s too damn hot to even step outside, I frequent salons to boost a «glow». I will say that after living in the South all of my life, where people without tans are people without souls (apparently) I know good tanning salons. I’ve been to countless versions. I’ve been to the kind that carry low-​price lotions and burn the sh*t out of my epidermis because the bulbs are too hot. I’ve been to the kind that carry high-​price lotions and gradually «glow» you over time. I’ve been to the kind that are somewhere in-​between. However, wherever I have gone I have never paid more than 90 $ a month for tanning. I have never been given the option of only 10 minute beds (which an experienced tanner knows only do so much to get you tan, it’s the 20minuters that get down to the first layer of skin and make the tan last longer). At Planet Beach, all of these things occur.
I had to pay 120 $ at Planet Beach for one month of tanning in which I didn’t absorb more color than the underbelly of an Alaskan halibut. And as I said before, I have tanned at multiple places in my life and am always able to at least achieve a nice golden look no matter how infrequently I frequent the salon. Every time I went, it was as if the bulbs were turned on the lowest possible degree, and there was no option of «leveled» beds or beds that run longer than ten minutes. Even the «strong» beds had no effect on my look. And yes, I was using a high-​end lotion the entire time. When I talked to an employee and expressed my frustration, she told me (in confidence) that one of the owners didn’t know that you were supposed to change the lightbulbs. REALLY? Because that’s tanning 101. I was also surprised to know that my month membership included no added benefits other than the tanning (of which was not getting me tan). I merely had a «discount» on spray-​tanning (not much of a discount if I remember) and no other perks whatsoever. The fact that the staff is friendly does not make the situation better. SOLARIS tanning salon on Maple street is 45 $ a month, and albeit a less-​established looking building, at least the beds actually work.
Don’t go here. Don’t spend your money. I heard they changed their prices a little bit – most likely due to complaints – but still, if you’re not getting tan, what’s the point of wasting part of your day sitting in a hot box full of blue light?
Then again, what’s the point of being tan? Hm…

Ugh. I liked Planet Beach until I joined at this location. I had been to a few others in Jefferson Parish and loved it. Uptown Planet Beach was terrible, I was happy to pay the cancellation fee.
The bulbs in the beds were not changed frequently, and I have a feeling they changed single bulbs at a time instead of relamping the entire bed, which is what is supposed to be done. One of the beds had a bulb that was barely lit and would flicker during the session.
The VIP bed in the back room was so crammed that you didnt have enough room to undress and lotion up without your ass rubbing against the wall and didnt have a door, but a cloth curtain instead. I endured this only because it was the only bed there that was halfway decent.
Appointments were necessary, but that is the case with all of the Planet Beach locations, which I like because a walk-​in is hit & miss.
There are way better tanning salons in the area. PB Kenner or City Beach in Metairie are better picks.
