Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel

This was a stop on our cemetery tour and I was really glad they showed us this beautiful church. It was located next to the cemetery that we were touring. We weren’t able to go inside as there was a mass going on inside. We learned that this church was built to do the mass amounts of funerals during the time of yellow fever in the city.
We learned that they have a Jazz Mass on Saturday and unfortunately we were unable to make it the following day. They have a beautiful outdoor prayer area that also has prayer candles that you can light. I took the time to light a candle and say a prayer. The outdoor area was made of bricks and was a very beautiful photo opportunity as well as a great religious opportunity.
The next time that I am in New Orleans, I will definitely try to catch the Jazz Mass as well as come by to light another candle and say a prayer (the Catholic in me is coming out).

For my 250^th review I wanted to write about a special place and this church is it! My best friend (like my brother) passed away last Halloween and this was his parish. Even though he lived in Uptown in the Riverbend he would always make the trek here for the 11:15am mass. In fact, my bestie was always late to everything like me but the one thing he was early for was mass so he could get a parking space and a good seat for mass. He loved this parish so much that when he passed away in lieu of flowers donations were given to the church in his name. And when he was sick Father Tony came to the hospital and visited my bestie and comforted the family. His mother and her friends would always come for the St. Jude novenas.
I have a long history with this church through my best friends and their families. My other high school best friend and his mother converted to Catholicism and went through RCIA in this church. It was wonderful witnessing that celebration!
And I have had the experience of lecturing once at this church when my best friend’s mum asked me. Back when I was part of a church group we handed out thanksgiving meals to needy families at the St. Jude community center. And I have attended the St. Jude fundraiser at the Mahalia Jackson theater a few times.
All I can say is that Father Tony is an amazing priest and a powerful speaker. His homilies are the best and hit home. He is energetic, uplifting, caring and just the epitome of what a good priest is supposed to be like!
And the choir is amazing! The 11:15am mass has a beautiful choir and sometimes even musicians.
But the best part is the congregation! It’s a packed house and there is a beautiful amalgamation of locals and tourists with ethnic diversity. It is a vibrant parish filled with parishioners who love it.
There is also an outside grotto as one of the reviewers mentioned where you can light candles. And there is a gift shop where Ms. Layla (sp?) and Leila (sp?) are friendly and will help you buy candles for you to light as well as other religious items.
This is a special church, a special place in my heart.

Super interesting and cool Roman Catholic Church. This church served at the mortuary chapel because of its location direction in front of the entrance to Saint Louis Cemetery Number One, which you should definitely not miss. Inside the now Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, there are several interesting and intricately decorated chapels on both sides of the main altar. Outside on the right side, there is a cool little man made rock grotto with a Virgin Mary inside. Definitely worth the visit.

My husband and I decided that we’d like to get married in New Orleans, even though we have no family/​friends there and it would require lot of planning and extra logistics.
My husband, not being a real Catholic, took it upon himself to research churches in the area. We checked out St. Patrick’s, St. Louis Cathedral, Blessed Francis Seelos and this church.
We checked out all four churches and visited with priests at 3 of them.
Father Tony at Our Lady of Guadalupe was the nicest of the bunch. He made planning a long distance wedding so easy. And, he made my husand feel comfortable with a catholic wedding. We were in and out of the ceremony in 23 minutes. And his sermon was beautiful.
I will always be grateful to Our Lady of Guadulpe for their part in making my wedding beautiful.
