At Loomed NOLA, we work with the last 9 families of weavers in Turkey who still do things the old fashioned way — by hand! We have a vast array of textiles that have been completely hand-woven on old-style shuttled looms, including: bath towels, hand towels, tea towels, napkins, blankets, scarves, wash clothes, robes and table cloths. Both custom tailored and standard pieces available in G.O.T.S. certified organic cotton, linen, bamboo and hand-spun silk.

In addition, we have hand crafted, artisan items including fresh goat milk soap made in rural Mississippi, antique carpet, antique copper ware and Raku quartz clay pottery.

The staff at Loomed NOLA are very knowledgeable about the products they carry, and strive to provide not only a unique shopping experience, but an educational one. We look forward to meeting you!

History

Established in 2012.

Molly and Paul, owners and operators of Loomed NOLA, quit their jobs in New Orleans in Summer 2011 and moved to Istanbul seeking adventure. They went exploring one day in search of unique Christmas gifts to send home to their family. Their search led them to a small shop in a Turkish bazaar in the old part of the city that sells the famous «Turkish Towel». These, of course, are everywhere… the difference here was that they were COMPLETELY hand-woven and made only with certified organic materials.

Neither Molly nor Paul could get the idea out of their head that the products they had found would be a great in New Orleans. So, they began a relationship with the shop’s proprietor and worked there until they left Turkey. The first order was placed with the weavers, and it was in the US the same day Molly and Paul returned in mid-September. They began selling out of their home 3 days later, and opened their shop on Ash Wednesday, 2013.

i’ll start by getting the price point out of the way — this is likely a select purchase, not an every day purchase. that said, i think it’s worth the investment.
i first caught wind of them when the mardi gras scarves were a thing — just kinda stuck in my mind. i didn’t necessarily want to wear that, but some short googling later i soon found myself bought into their concept, their story, etc. i picked up a couple «pebble beach» towels at $ 30 each as they were on sale (regularly $ 45 each) earlier this spring and have been enjoying them. again, that’s definitely steep — but it’s not like a towel you may have from BBB or target.
during the warmer months, i find that my regular towels just stop drying (regular meaning i picked them at either target or bed bath or similar). they work the other parts of the year, but come muggy May and onwards, they just stay partly damp (you know what i’m talking about). so enter loomed with this different weave, and i now have a solution with a piece of cloth that will dry quickly and stay fresh through the hot months. it may seem weird to use something that is on the same shelf as a «scarf» or something that feels so thin, but it actually helps alot.
the team when i went in was really helpful. they let me unfold all kinds of colors and patterns as i worked through my indecision. i felt they were helpful, and i didn’t feel any pressure to make a purchase.
i’ll probably be back if they go on sale for my own purchases, and wouldn’t mind paying full price for housewarming gifts, etc.

I appreciate their commitment to the families of weavers they work with in Turkey, and the great quality I know I’ll always get when I make a purchase. Molly, the owner, is always so helpful and knowledgable about her products and makes great suggestions. There’s nowhere else like Loomed in the city!

I needed a new Mardi Gras scarf and had a memory of seeing one that came from Loomed Nola. I drive past The Rink every day, so I figured it would be easy enough to pop in and pick one up. However, they were closed the first day I tried to go. (It was a Sunday. They’re usually open on Sunday, just not on this Sunday, per the sign on the door.) A week goes by, I’m still lusting for a scarf and I stop by again on a Saturday. Success, they were open.
I picked out my scarf and paid for it. I tried to make small talk with the lady working but she didn’t really seem interested in chit chatting. No worries, I was trying to be polite but I really just wanted to be on my way. I got home and tried some different ways to style my new $ 50 scarf and realized it is too short. Which is ind of disappointing. Fortunately it is also really, really beautiful, so I’m going to figure out a way to make it work. (Admittedly, I don’t really do scarves except for winter scarves when it’s cold, so there could definitely be some user error involved in styling it properly.)
They had some gorgeous other scarves, towels and runners. I would love one of their bed coverings for summertime, they are so pretty and so light. Unfortunately, they are also pricey so, for now, I’ll just dream about having one. I’ll also dream about the display of the whitest, fluffiest towels I’ve ever seen. I was afraid to look at the price, but I imagined wrapping up in one of those would be pretty much the same as wrapping up in angel wings. They looked divine.
To sum it up– they serve a pretty small niche, so I don’t know when or if I’ll be back (although I can’t stop thinking about the Mardi Gras kitchen towels I saw when there… I want some for myself plus they would make a great gift.) And, true, I really do wish my Mardi Gras scarf was at least a few inches longer, especially for the price, but it’s not. It is, however, soft and pretty, so I’ll learn to love it.
