Joan of Arc Statue

France erected the statue in 1972 as a gift to New Orleans, whose namesake, Orleans, was one of the towns Joan of Arc (1412 – 1431) defended from the English during the Hundred Years War (1337 – 1453). In the city’s defense, she was overwhelmingly successful, but her exploits did not stop there. In just over a year, this teenager led troops in 13 different battles and sieges, and captured more than 30 cities. For more information, check out Joan of Arc’s Military Successes and Failures.
The statue displays Joan in a determined, victorious pose, carrying her custom-​made banner, which depicted God holding the world with two angles. In addition, there were the words «Jesus Maria.»

Interesting statue, but I wouldn’t make a special trip here. It is by the French Market.

I’ll keep this review short and not repeat the historical facts from other reviews.
The Joan of Arc statue is a great landmark and a nice reminder of New Orleans’s roots from France. Cast in bronze, the statue is kept polished and makes a great photo of any visit to the French Market.

This is a statue. I was unable to eat it and it did not show me it’s boobs. Other than that, it’s aight.

The Joan of Arc Statue is my favorite New Orleans statue.
I love that the statue sits in the middle of Decatur Street as if she is guarding the French Market from attack. I also love that unlike many other prominent statues, Joan is done in golden bronze and shines as if she were made of actual gold.
There really isn’t much more to say about this statue other than you should take a picture of it when you go to the French Market.
Looking at the two previous reviews I notice that one review claims the statue has been in New Orleans since 1959 where the other says 1972. I wonder who is right.
Update: After doing some of my own research I learned that the statue has been here since 1959. Looks like someone may need to update their review.

For my 100^th Unilocal review for the Unilocal 100 challenge, I decided to review Joan of Arc.
I absolutely love this statue. One of the many nods to France in our great city. She sits majestically on her horse on Decatur St. She has become such a fixture in our city, that it’s hard to believe she has only been here since 1959 when Charles de Gaulle came here and presented her to New Orleans on a state visit.
I know it’s probably a little hokey, but I like then there is a big Saints game and someone takes the liberty of attaching a Saints flag to her pole.

The people of France gave the golden bronze statue of Joan of Arc to the City of New Orleans in 1959. Unfortunately New Orleans was unable to find a way to pay the expense to erect the statue so it wasted away in storage for eight years. Fortunately private funding was secured and the statue was was finally placed on a 17 foot pedestal in front of the International Trade Market at the foot of Canal Street. When Harrah’s Casino was constructed in 1999 the statue had to be moved to its present location of the «Place De France» on Decatur Street in the French Quarter next to the French Market on Decatur Street.
This statue is an exact copy of the 1880 Emmanuel Fremiet equestrian statue of Joan located at Place des Pyramides, Paris.
The inscription on the pedestal of St. Joan of Arc’s statue reads as follows:

There is an annual parade in the French Quarter honoring Joan of Arc on her birthday every January 6^th which also happens to coincide with Twelfth Night which is the official beginning of the Carnival Season.
