The Hippie Gypsy embodies the spirit of the 60’s and 70’s in a timeless fashion. Flashbacks are free as you step into the store. Classic rock pumps through the speakers and the scent of nag champa fills the air everyday. The knowledgable staff can assist you with inquiries of waterpipes, vaporizers, or anything else in a smokers arsenal. The smokeshop is not the only draw to this amazing store. There is also a wide selection of fair trade/​hand made dresses, skirts, pants, tops, and purses, all with a touch of «hippie». Not all of the clothing is for women, there is also a wide selection of rare classic rock band t-​shirts and striking tie-​dyes.

History

Established in 2009.

The mom and pop shop began in 1996 in Phoenix Arizona, eventually moving to 2 locations, one at 601 S. Mill ave in Tempe, AZ, the other at 351 N. 4th ave in Tucson, AZ. The shop in New Orleans opened as the owners fell in love with the city, deciding to make it their new home.

If you want a well stocked, well organized head shop with friendly staff and cool stuff, jump in.

I love this place! They have the cutest dresses and bags:) and the staff was ultra helpful and friendly! I bought a dress and discovered it was too big when I got back to the hotel, they gave me no trouble with an exchange the next day:) I got a great handmade bag that I’m sure will become my favorite most handy travel bag!!!

It’s not really a hippie place but it’s a colourful spot for a kitschy shirts or sun dresses or your incense needs.
A real hippie would grow their own cotton, plants for dyes and d.i.y. Tie dye.

I found this place on Unilocal and I have to say the positive reviews are true. The staff was really friendly and super knowledgeable. I think I went up one grade level in my vaporizer knowledge after talking to the guy John who helped me out. The selection was great and they had some nice accessories. Definitely a good place to check out for any of your vaporizing needs.

I walked into this location 2 consecutive days and was not acknowledged. I simply wanted to purchase some E-​Juice (Great Selection). The second day I came in, I waited and waited (again) and finally I had to grab someone off of a ladder to get it out of the case for me and the other individual working asked if I could wait because she was selling a mod (same individual that just stared at me the day before). Monster opportunity to make more money with just a little attention to your guests. I would have spent more but… Great little store, great location and terrible assistance.

Walking into this store was like taking a step back in time. I’m not one that usually enjoys shopping but I took my time browsing all of the cool things that were for sale. The smell of the store was like a 1960s head shop, the folks working there were awesome, and the music that was playing made the experience complete. If I am ever make it back to New Orleans I will make sure to drop in here again.

Awesome pipes and cheaper then the herb. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Other head shops just stare at you till you demand to buy something. Cute clothes, wish i could afford more, guess fair trade makes things expensive. I always stop there when I’m in the quarter they are always getting new stuff. Love it!

Expensive but they carry unique original things you won’t find many places. The only thing I didn’t like is the clothing (women’s) was mostly «one size» for the pants. I’m small so it’s rare I fit «one size» without looking like I’m wearing oversized clothing. I did buy some really cool stickers. If anything it’s nice to take a look inside if you enjoy hippie stuff like me.

Okay, guess what. It’s not a true hippie place. Shock. It’s very clearly a certain type of store and sitting on Canal Street where it is, it is exactly what you should expect of a place positioned for tourists. All that said, it had the nicest people working there and sold some different stuff from the millions of stores around it. This place is worth dropping in for if for no other reason than to read all the amusing little signs in the store. I’d have taken pics, but there was a sign letting me know that was not okay. Too bad, because I got quite a few laughs in there. If you’re already wandering around, wander in and have a laugh.

Its suppose to be a hippie store, but from the prices they have on most things, they don’t represent any hippies I know, more like big business.

This is a touristy souvenir shop masquerading as a hippie store. I would place it somewhere in the middle. It is not as bad as the countless shops you encounter on Canal Street and in the Quarter, but it is not the place to go to buy some authentic New Orleans gypsy and/​or voodoo goods.
