Garden District Neighborhood

I took a free walking tour here and got to see some famous houses previously or currently owned by Anne Rice, Nicholas Cage, Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt, Tom Arnold etc.
Gorgeous multi-​million dollar homes that look the same after a while.
Apparently the Garden District was made so that the Americans would be attracted to this area and spend money in this expanse of land away from the French-​Creoles. They didn’t want the noisy and rude Americans to live in the same neighborhood so they created the Garden District. Worked like a charm.
The sidewalk here is even more treacherous than the city. Watch where you step here.
You can easily spend some time walking here and then grab lunch at Commander’s Palace.

This neighborhood is breathtakingly beautiful! It’s full of a lot of American history both good and bad. Many beautiful dream homes here which made me fall in love with this place! We took the St. Charles streetcar line to get here from the French quarter as it cuts through this neighborhood.
We took a walking tour using a tour guide who filled us in on everything we needed to know about a good deal of each house in this neighborhood. There are also several celebrity homes here also. Many movies were also filmed in this neighborhood using the historical homes here for southern historical period movies.
It hurts my soul a little bit to know that architecture like this isn’t being continued for regular homes in our day and age, especially where I currently live.
I definitely wouldn’t mind visiting this area over and over again.

Love architecture? I do.
The area was originally developed between 1832 and 1900 and is considered one of the best-​preserved collections of historic mansions in the Southern United States. Huge, Victoria homes, many built when there were only 2 per block w/​equally huge gardens. Some of the mansions are jaw dropping humongous. You can’t help but wonder who lived there.
The boundaries of the Garden District are: St. Charles Avenue, 1^st Street, Magazine Street and Toledano Street. The Lower Garden District around Magazine St. is also interesting, with smaller homes and much renovation going on (Dec 2015)
There are tours, however I’ve never taken one. If you’re not into a bit of walking, you can enjoy the homes along St. Charles Ave by riding the St Charles line streetcar. It’s a nice ride for $ 1.25 one way. (See

Love the homes and the beauty of the pretty streets. Here for Christmas and it’s so pretty with all the decorations and a cocktail while you walk.

On a recent trip to NOLA a friend and I wanted to explore the garden district neighborhood and see the pretty homes.
We wanted to ride the St. Charles Street at as well so this seemed like a win win. Unfortunately they were renovating the street cars we took a normal bus. The same transfer from the riverfront streetcar let us get on the bus.
We made the mistake of walking one block north or St. Charles Street. An older gentleman talked to us and told us it wasn’t safe to do that.
We got back in the actual Garden District and the homes lived up to the hype. They were beautiful works of art.

Multi-​million dollar mansions galore in this New Orleans neighborhood. Very picturesque and home of Lafayette Cemetery #1. Take a stroll along Magazine Street for restaurants and shops.
None of the grit of the French Quarter, but all of the charm in this residential, walking neighborhood.

None of the houses are especially fascinating, they are just large. Ostentatious, historical displays of wealth in a city built by slaves are disgusting. I went through the streets, feeling more and more sad that the people who were paid nothing to build those houses died horrible deaths, their children living in neighborhoods the city won’t rebuild or maintain in the 9^th ward and Treme. Meanwhile, the descendants of those who stole the work and lives of so many live in houses like that.
My anger and sadness increased the longer I drove though the neighborhood. I won’t go back.

Beautiful Historic Homes!
The Garden District is a must see for any traveler visiting NOLA. The historic building, architectural accents and lovely gardens are an enjoyable way to spend the morning. There are many ways to views them including bus tours, walking tours, bike and segway tours. The simplest and most economical way is to buy a $ 3 day pass and use the Green Line RTA trolley. The Day Pass lets you hop on and off as you like to tour at your own pace. You can also stop in at the quaint eateries in the Garden District and then hop back on at any stop you like. Enjoy!

This is a very easy district to walk around and find beautiful historical and famous people homes. Although there are formal paid tours you can go on, I found that I hit all the major stops just by wandering around. You’re bound to see the good stuff just by walking (and by following the tour busses when they drive by and stop at a house). It’s a lovely neighborhood and the houses are insane! I loved Sandra’s house and the American Horror Story house the best!

We love it here. Every time I pass through it makes me want to move here. Love the architecture and the plethora of things to do in this neighborhood.

Well, here’s a part of town I really wish I lived in. The Garden District seems to have it all: gorgeous houses, great restaurants and good shopping.
This is one of those classic New Orleans neighborhoods that is perfectly walkable and as picturesque as a postcard. It’s nice to imagine living in one of these gorgeous homes and sipping coffee on the front porch, whilst looking through the newspaper. You really aren’t going to see homes like this anywhere else. Well, maybe in Natchez or a place like that, but the Garden District really is the epitome of Southern charm.

We downloaded a self guided tour, played it on our phones, to get a better idea of the district, the history, the architecture and to know more about what we were seeing on our walk. Getting here from the French Quarter is part of the fun. Grab the St Charles trolley car, all for a dollar (each way) and watch the city roll by. You get more of a taste for the Downtown, the neighborhoods, and where people actually live. The trolley car takes you within a block of the Garden District and runs frequently. You will see many historical homes, and some have placards in front describing who built the home, the historical significances, etc but I would recommend that you come armed with some sort of guide book for a fuller experience

Stunning Houses!
There really isn’t an address for this hence the «neighborhood» but if you have an hour or two to spare I strongly suggest stopping by to see the beautiful homes.
It’s a great reality check. I’m from Orange County CA so I’ve seen my fair share of beautiful homes but nothing touches these heirloom style homes. The details are so full of history, I can’t even begin to describe how much there is to see and look at.
Must visit.

Like every great city, NOLA has it’s own neighbourhood known for walking and admiring the architecture. The garden district is a beautiful area of NOLA where you’re transported back in time to when every home was unique and were true expressions of the owners style/​taste.
Trees, gardens, friendly people, quaint restaurants, unbelievable architecture… it is just gorgeous. You’ll be totally envious that you don’t live here.
We walked for a couple of hours through this neighbourhood and let me tell you… it’ll make you salivate at how beautiful and unique the homes are. Mixing Victorian style with southern charm resulted in this area have its own defined architecture, not seen elsewhere.
Not to be missed and very accessible.

A must see when in New Orleans! It’s walk-​able from the French Quarter, but I would recommend getting on a hop-​on, hop-​off tour bus so you get some background on what you are looking at.
Lots of beautiful houses, a haunted property or two, and lots of cute boutique shops and restaurants. I would love to explore it more.

We wandered here and there, took tons of pictures, marvelled at the trees, the flowers, the wrought iron gates and some homes with stained glass. We found a historical house that is now a library. Lovely to rest inside from the heat.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood.
During our visit to NOLA, we stayed in the Garden District, a historic area with beautiful houses, the St. Charles streetcar line, Commander’s Palace, and Lafayette Cemetery all within a stone’s throw. If your hotel is in the area, you really don’t need a car at all. We walked or took the streetcar everywhere from here. It was so nice to stroll around, admiring the architecture, looking up and seeing Mardi Gras beads hanging from the trees, and greeting the friendly residents walking their dogs. There are also a plethora of cafes and restaurants in the neighborhood to choose from. I highly recommend staying here if you’re planning a visit.

Did an extensive walking tour through the most significant historical estates this morning. Learned about double-​gallery houses, 19^th c. Townhouses, & center-​hall cottages. Saw loads of Italianate style mansions and one remarkable Elizabethan chimneyed estate with actual gothic arched windows! Blow my eyes away!!!
Wouldn’t you know it: they were filming an episode of American Horror Story TV serial (new season?) there at the largest house in the Garden: Buckner house near Chestnut and Jackson. Blocked my view, man!
So weird to see Hollywood infiltrating. Security guards and all… i remember the Ashley Judd flick Double Jeopardy in which she was running through the Lafayette cemetery…
Enjoyed Anne Rice’s house, some former governors of LA, an all-​girls private school, and a Confederate colonel’s house. One of my favorites: the expansive Italianate mansion with elegant decaying brick on garage across the street from Anne Rice’s former house (listed at $ 2.65MM last year). Buckner house also a total stunner, black and white beauty.

The garden district is so beautiful. Buy the $ 3 day pass for the streetcar to get there. I’m glad I got to see the Lafayette cemetery, Sandra bullock’s house, Archie manning’s house, the witches’ mansion from American Horror Story, and magazine street. The cobble stone sidewalks are cute, but uneven, so watch your step.

From the French Quarter you can get here quickly (about 15 min.) on the tram that goes down St. Charles Ave (get off at Washington Street).
We loved coming here after a crazy night out in town, it was so peaceful and absolutely lovely to just wander aimless through the streets checking out the beautiful architecture of the homes. There were a few tours here and there, and in hind site I wish we had booked one because the information we overheard while lurking was very interesting. We used our Fodor’s Travel guide, which served us well.
There are some really amazing homes out here such as Anne Rice’s old home and Trent Reznor’s old place. Even if you don’t take a tour or have a guidebook, take the journey out here.
You can also visit the Commander’s Palace which boasts one of the best chef’s not only in LA, but in America. Entrees are $ 30 – 50 with appetizers running in the $ 10 – 15 range.
The Lafayette Cemetery is also in this district and is worth a visit.
