Gambit New Orleans

I am by no means an environmentalist but it pains me that actual trees are killed in the printing of this trash.
I unfortunately wasted 10 minutes of my life skimming through their «Best of New Orleans» issue (don’t they have a list of Best Ofs every week?) and I am now dumber for having done so. They actually have the categories Best Personal Trainer and Best Plastic Surgeon. What a surprise that all of the finalists have a paid advertisement in the edition…
What is with the Gambit’s unnatural obsession with and hatred of Bobby Jindal? Isn’t this supposed to be bird cage liner that tells you which acoustic minstrel is playing at the local coffee house? Leave the political reviews to journalists who have a college education and can spell.
Have you ever actually tried reading a Gambit? I think there are washing machine manuals that are better laid out and more entertaining than trying to read this finger smudging trash.
In a metropolitan area with as many festivals, concerts, art galleries, theater, shows, happenings, etc. etc. as New Orleans, we are deserving of an «alternative weekly» that befits the amazing culture we have to offer. The Gambit would not be worthy of Albany, GA.
*An apology to birds. It is bad enough we keep them in cages Do we have to further insult them by lining the bottoms of their cages with crap?

I used to read the Gambit all the time and it was a great source of information of upcoming events and music. Since Katrina it has been much harder to find Gambits as not as many places seem to carry them or they seem to run out of them faster. In the years since Katrina I’ve actually picked up a paper copy of Gambit only a handful of times and I’ve gone to their web version more frequently but still only on rare occasion. My main exposure to Gambit these days is via «Gambytes» their weekly email newsletter synopsis. Maybe I’ve just gotten older grumpier and much less cool but I get so many emails about events that my calender is often so full its hard to fit anything else in but I often miss cool things I would’ve liked to have known about that sometimes get missed in their newsletter.

The Gambit always felt more like a New Orleans newspaper to me than the Times Picayune. The Gambit has much more of a local flavor in it’s articles, the classifieds, the listings of live music and shows, plus it’s free. Can’t get more Laissez-​faire than that. Pick it up, what have you got to lose? The price is right, all it costs is your time.

As our only «alternative» paper (and I do use that term loosely), the Gambit offers a needed counterpoint to the mainstream Times Picayune. And importantly, it is locally owned. As others have noted, it is free and used to be the go to place for apartment classifieds… but I guess Craig’s List has all that business now.
The writers go in-​depth on local issues each and every week, with occasional breaks for highlighting important local happenings, Hello Jazz Fest issue!
They also host one of my favorite local news blogs, Blog of New Orleans (
). The once a week twitter round up, on Mondays, is hysterical.

The Gambit is my favorite free New Orleans periodical.
Available nearly everywhere in the metro area, Gambit offers great articles, restaurant reviews and live show information.
It seems that the format focuses on one big article per week. The articles run the gamut from politics, investigative reporting and purely opinion pieces. While I don’t always agree with their viewpoint, I do enjoy their articles.
One of my favorite things each week is to read Blake Pontchartrain. Blake is the alias of the person who answers questions regarding New Orleans history. The questions and answers are informative and fascinating. I have learned so much from reading that section.
Gambit does have special issues regarding food, bars and an annual best of issue, but other than the best of issue, these issues seem to be nothing more than business ads.
If you see a Gambit, pick it up, and all day long you’ll have a free newspaper.

Most major cities have their free weeklies these days, and often they are somehow affiliated with a larger publisher, resulting in a certain consistency in style, format and content. The Gambit has changed a lot from when I was in grad school but it still retains a lot of helpful information for out of town visitors that you aren’t necessarily going to get from your Unilocal application.
Current schedules for clubs, articles about musicians and lists of restaurants — in much more of an «At A Glance» format which you can manipulate to your needs (ie, tear and fold, write upon, etc) — is always very useful.
Tons of great information — if you’re a visitor, make sure you pick up a copy of the Gambit and leave the other stacks of formulaic tourist brochures in the rack!

Where I’m from we have something very similar to this. However, the difference is the editorials are a bit boring. I’m not drawn in to the articles or its art work.
The happenings (eg. concerts, festivals, gallery shows, etc) in the city are informative.
They need some work on the website. But all in all in the paper I pick up to find out where to go on my free weekends.

The Gambit has always been a great resource when you’re looking for stuff to do in the city. Especially if you don’t have Internet access — their print listings are definitely better than their online ones.

To the locals, the Gambit might not be much, but I think it’s an excellent resource for out of town visitors.
Available at many venues through the city, the Gambit offers information on events that are going on in the city such as live shows, fests and gallery showings.
The Gambit offers reviews of restaurants and has articles about little historic things that are going on the city. For example, in the Mardi Gras issue, there was an article about the history of Rex.
It’s not one of the greatest free publications in the city, but considering that it is probably geared more towards tourists, it gets the job done.

Gambit does deliver the live music schedule for the week, which is convenient. But that’s about it.
The classified section isnt nearly as reputable as the Times Picayune Classifieds. There’s quite a few escorts who advertise in the Gambit, so if you’re in the market for an escort, Gambit is your source.
Most of the other advertisements are pretty much the same every issue. Basically with each issue of Gambit, theres about 24% new, fresh, material.
Gambit works great for crawfish boils, homemade fly swatters, housebreaking puppy pads and paper mache projects.

Gambit seems like one big inside joke.
The Gambit is no PW or City Paper, but it’s working on it. Working hard.
