This is what a doughnut shop should be. Don’t get me wrong, there are good «gourmet» doughnut shops, but they don’t really get at what makes a good doughnut. Paying $ 3 for one doughnut is obscene unless it bestows some sort of dizzying, euphoric high that lasts the rest of the day. This place is like what you imagine a good doughnut shop is. Everything is really fresh, and it all tastes the way that you expect it will. But, each doughnut only costs in the realm of a dollar a piece. The staff is friendly and this is still definitely a local’s place.
My favorite might have been the cream cheese filling, because it doesn’t taste how you expect it will, and it is eye-​openingly good. But the chocolate heaven doughnuts are also appropriately named; it’s closer to chocolate mousse in a doughnut than chocolate crème.
I’m going here every time I’m in New Orleans.

I went to the rouses last week and it’s only been a few day’s and it is so damn Mold on it I want to know what they will do about this

This is such a great place. Their staff is so friendly and the prices are like that out of the 1950s. A neighborhood gem.

Friendly service. Nice little pastries and doughnuts. I go there for the day old French Bread to make bread pudding.

Straight from the fifties, this atmospheric establishment has sweet ladies serving delicious donuts for a criminally low price. Great place for a sweet tooth or a cute breakfast date. Get yourself a 75 cent coffee while you’re there.

This bakery is one of New Orleans’ great secrets. The French Bread is utterly authentic, the doughnuts are the finest to be found, and the King Cakes (flavored or «traditional») are definitive!

Home to what I think is the best and most consistent Po Boy bread but whats special about this place is the little known fact that they have some of the best donuts in town. The powdered jelly and cream are huge and off the charts they also feature a great cinnamon twist. If you have some change in your pocket, this is a sweet place to spend it.

ABOUT AS LOCAL AS YOU CAN GET: it’s definitely off the tourists’ beaten path;
PO’ BOY FRENCH, chocolate holes, bear claws, cream puffs, etc., all freshly baked;

«awl-​RITE». Yesterday there was an interesting local Unilocal stream on New Orleans colloquialisms: «K&B purple», «making groceries», «pass a good time», etc. But to me the definitive compendium is Toole’s Pulitzer prize winning: «A Confederacy of Dunces.» The book begins with Ignatius Riley meeting his mother under the clock at Holmses. Clutched in her hands is a box of two dozen freshly made cakes «fancy mix». Walking into Binder’s I can’t help but feel that in these many years since Holmses closed, Mrs. Riley would choose this bakery to get her cakes fancy. In fact the first thing displayed in the glass pastry case are those small iced squares in pastel pinks, aqua blues, and soft whites. There’s another endearing colloquialism that’s spoken at Binder’s and to me it’s the friendliest indigenous greeting I know: not «hello», not «good morning» but the warm and direct: «awl-​RITE.»

They get a five star because it like it the old days
you still buy your donut and get your coffee and sit there
and enjoy without people smoking, and they should start
back putting that flashing light when they have hot bread

They don’t get five stars only because they need to be open later in the afternoon so that I can pick up delicious french bread for dinner as they are right next door to where I live.
Although maybe there should be an added star for saving me 100 lbs of carb on my ass.
Everyone yaks about Leidenheimer, but I personally think Binder has the best po boy bread. Light and airy on the inside, crusty on the outside (sturdy enough to not completely fall apart with a little gravy if you know what I’m saying), and a nice soft chew.
There is a retail shop, but think more bakery than coffee shop. I think they close around 2 or 3pm and they are closed on Sundays.
They also have absolutely delicious plain and chocolate glazed donuts, and cinnamon sugar twists (I find their filled donuts actually a little too filled and very very sweet). And delicious king cake at festival time.
Brownie points for the crazy delicious smell of donuts and french bread baking in my back courtyard at 1am. Minus a point for not being open at 1am to pick up hot loaf.
Extra brownie points for super nice bakery workers who make me feel safe when I’m coming home late at night and they are keeping an eye out on the block during their break times.

The other big french bread bakery in the city. They don’t get the press or the market share of Leidenheimer’s but are still really good.
Again, this is the bakery, but they may have a retail store where you can actually purchase items… at least they did once upon a time. Look for Binder’s at your local grocery.
