Beauty On de Bayou

You’re not lying last year I got charged $ 250 for hair that didn’t even last two weeks the damn Senegalese twists were slipping out I was and still am pissed off about it!!! I sat in that chair from morning to night and left out annoyed and unsatisfied with that thin ass mess… I still am upset and want my damn money back! The next week I paid a girl $ 80 for box braids that were BEAUTIFUL and didn’t come out. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! I’m all for supporting black businesses but not here…

I initially made an appt for my daughter to have a silk press; however, upon arrival the stylist told me that her recommendation would be a mohawk cut & leave hair in its natural state. I agreed with her recommendation & the fact that she recommended such made me feel even more comfortable. Unbeknownst to me, I was in for a huge disappointment. I was quoted $ 70 max for the initial style we agreed upon (that included deep conditioning, trim, & silk press). The final cut & style (I use the latter word loosely) was $ 80, and that’s no deep conditioning included. I made the mistake of «assuming» an increase in price would’ve been announced. To be fair, the style (comb coils) did take her a long time to complete; however, I prefer to pay for quality work & I don’t feel I received anything close to that. I asked in the beginning would the coils be separated, as I knew I wasn’t a fan of how they were looking, and she told me yes. As a result I let her proceed thinking the end product would look better. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The only reason I didn’t make my displeasure too known was because daughter thought it was cute. I couldn’t bare to dampen her confidence in her look. The pictures I included were taken as soon as we made it home from the salon.

With my daughter being so far from home (she’s a college student at Xavier), one of the things that goes neglected is her locked hair.
Dwana perfectly washed, twisted and styled her hair in under 2 hours and helped her get back to campus (she has no car). I was able to call her on FaceTime and she was knowledgable and kind and very patient with my daughter and I. She made helpful recommendations for her to care for her hair. A bit pricier than we are used to paying from here in Rhode Island, but still good work.

Had a trim and wash and the price was not bad at all. $ 35 Brianna did my hair and made me feel extremely comfortable through her candid conversation and informative hair talk. I appreciated that although there were products in the shop she didn’t try to force feed me into buying anything. The feel of the shop was homey and comfortable, not to mention it did not reek of chemicals, I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about. She was also there on time, which is a rarity for early morning appointments sometimes. The location is perfect and is a great spot for a booming neighborhood. I will be back for sure. Uh oh! Look, I’m just going to tell the truth, okay? I thought everything was fine when I walked out the door, but when I got home and actually took a look at my hair, I was SHOCKED! Dwana messed my hair up so bad! I went in with a head full of luscious locks with a lot of THICK, not thin and damaged, new growth. Other clients were in awe of how thick my hair was. First of all, she linked some of the locks in the back together like a chain linked fence! She joined locks that I didn’t want joined. Joining locks is a very personal decision that I wanted to make on my own. She didn’t have the right! I only wanted the extra small locks joined, not the thick ones! Secondly, I paid $ 160 for interlocking, but she grabbed hands full of locks and palm rolled them! Now I have a huge parts that are the size of a fat man’s thumb, while the rest of my locks are small. She palmed rolled some of my mircolocks and that is a big no no! She even two strand twisted and braided the new growth instead of interlocking. I have broken hairs and never has this happened when I do my own hair. I texted her pictures of the mess she made and she agreed to «fix it». However, my intuition is telling me not to go back and I’m going to listen to it. She’ll probably mess my hair up even more! I’ve been doing my own hair all these years and the first time I go to a «professional» and she ruins my hair! I can’t believe she did me this way because I thought she was very nice, but it seems to be all about the money. Apparently she learned early on that you attract more bees with honey than with vinegar. She is NOT skilled when it comes to interlocking microlocks or Sisterlocks, so stay far, far away! Dwana, if you’re reading this, I hope you take this as constructive criticism. Don’t bite off more than you can chew and you need to be trained on how to interlock micro locks, okay sweetie? Also practice patience, because you rushed through my hair and tangled it up like a spider web! I went for a consultation and you saw how much hair I had BEFORE the appointment, but you still messed my hair up. If you couldn’t do it, then you should have said so instead of messing up my hair. Lastly, she never apologized for her awful work and didn’t offer to return my money. She is very unprofessional, lazy, and doesn’t care about her clients at all. She’s going into real estate with this terrible character, so good luck to all you home buyers!

I made an appointment and was told I’d have to wait 2 hours for my haircut when I arrived. The people working at this salon were unprofessional and inconsiderate of my time. If you respect and appreciate your clients, someone should call when you’re running 2 hours behind schedule. I at least could’ve saved myself the drive and spent that time trying to find a better salon.

I was a walk-​in and they were able to give me a two strand twist with braids on the side on the same day in under three hours! I have pretty thick and long natural type 4 hair. Wonderful service, wonderful people, and very professional atmosphere. I will definitely come back next time I’m in Louisiana.

I needed my hair braided and cute for my birthday and I was super last minute. I called the shop and was able to get an appt and have my hair beautiful in the same day! Lizzy is awesome! Very gifted and sweet woman! I swear I have found my new best friend!

I was visiting New Orleans for the week and I’ve been wanting to big chop my hair for quite some time. After looking at a few different shops I decided to give beauty on de Bayou a call. I was given Yanni’s (sp?) number and scheduled an appointment for the next day although they do take walk ins later on in the week. When I arrived Yanni and talked about what I wanted and we started immediately. She was very attentive to what I asked for and gave me quite a few good tips on how to manage my newly natural hair. I was extremely pleased with my appointment and the price wasn’t bad at all. I highly recommend this salon for anyone who wants to big chop their hair. You’ll be taken care of. Side note, they sell Lawrence-​Ray Concepts products in the store but because I have to fly, I didn’t buy any

My mom and I had the pleasure of getting our hair did by Morgan and Dwana at Beauty on de Bayou in December for my wedding. Both ladies were available for a consultation and came in to the shop early to get us together. AND Morgan came to my hotel the morning of the wedding to put the finishing touches on my look. Everything was amazing and I felt gorgeous. The flat twists lasted for two weeks! Thank you for making my day even better.

i where my hair «natural» and once it gets warm i stop with the straightening and want braids. I had heard great things about beauty on the bayou and dwana for years from friends with dreadlocks. however, i made an appointment with lizzy, who is the «braid specialist.»
and specialist she is! armed with a photo of exactly how i wanted my hair to look, i trusted lizzy to make me look just like the pic! and that she did! my cornrows were tight, even, and exactly what i requested. i have already made a second appointment and given lizzy’s contact info to all those who complimented my new do! this was easy because not only did my hair look great, but lizzy was sweet, focused and professional. she went beyond my expectations by analyzing my scalp and hair for growth issues, shedding, and overall health.
finally, the salon was filled with friendly service providers and patrons alike. i could tell beauty on the bayou is a «spot» not just a salon. thanks for letting me hangout ladies and gentlemen. i will be back!

After a long 7 years away from home I decided that the time was right to get something done to my newly cut natural hair. I’ve heard a lot about protective styling so I thought why not?
I saw a Youtube video of the owner explaining about her shop and her employees. She seemed to have such a positive vibe and beautiful demeanor that I was sold already.
The YouTube video was telling the truth! The salon is so clean and welcoming. You can’t help but to feel at home and in good hands. That’s only because you are.
My stylist, Janay, was so professional and kind. You can tell the difference between someone who does hair for the money and someone who does hair for the love of it. Janay does hair for the love of her craft and it shows. She did my full head of two strand twists in the least amount of time I’ve ever experienced them done. And, on top of that they came out GORGEOUS! And that’s not only coming from me. She made sure throughout the process that I was pleased with how they were coming out as well. The owner, Ms. Dwana, was also so professional and willing to give any tips and advice I needed as a natural hair newcomer.
I recommend this salon to anyone and everyone! This salon is truly one of a kind.

I’ve gotten my hair done here three times, each time in a kinky twist style. The first two times, I got it done by the owner, Dwana. My hair was perfect, lasted in great condition for 2 months and I was happy with everything. If I was rating purely on those experiences, I would give it 5 stars.
The third time, I was styled by another woman. She was 20 minutes late, talked to a friend the entire time, and parted huge sections of my hair for the twists because my hair was «thicker than [she] thought it would be.» Because the sections were so big, my hair was fuzzy and unkempt looking in two weeks. I took it out a week later, feeling like I’d wasted my money.
If I could guarantee that only Dwana would do my hair, I’d go back every time without fail. But the fact that I was scheduled for this other young lady who did a shoddy job really put me off. I would go back, but only to the owner.

Give credit where credit is due…
Finally I found a place that my vibe connected with to wash & retwist my dreads.
Deboara (spelling?) was completely hospitable, nice, and most important… went straight down to business.
Within the 2^nd wash my hair felt a lot lighter and revived cause yes, it was dirty, but this was a quicker reaction than the norm.
Fast foward to the end… my hair not only looked dominant, but with the owners own products used, I felt fresh and it smelled F*#@ing Great!!!
The bonus are the stores that surround the area, like the Jamaican spot, McHardy’s chicken, Record store, and the book store that just felt right to step into.
I’ll definitely be back to get my hair done again, plus get some hair products.

I called yesterday morning to set up an appointment with someone to get my hair washed and flat ironed. I called both numbers listed on the salon’s site, but got no answer. No problem there, but someone then called me back saying their name was «Lorna» from Beauty On The Bayou. I told her I was calling to get the price of a wash and flat iron service, because I was interested in having my hair done there, and she gave me the number to another employee at the shop. «Lorna» then told me, «Tell her (the other employee) that Dawana gave you her number-I’m the owner». I thought this was odd, because she failed to mention her real name and position when she introduced herself, but I digress.
I set up the appointment for 5:00 pm the following day. I received a confirmation phone call making sure my appointment was kept. I got there at 5:01 pm, after class, and the stylist was just starting to braid another client’s hair! I saw this, and she asked «You don’t mind waiting, do you?» I told her no, thinking I wouldn’t wait longer than 20 – 30 minutes. ONE HOUR went by, and I was still sitting there. Honestly, the only reason I even stayed as long as I did was to see if she’d start on my hair before the hour was up, but, unfortunately that wasn’t the case. I left, she called and asked if I wanted to reschedule. I told her I was so turned off by the entire experience that I don’t see myself going back to the salon for any service. If you value your time, and a certain level of professionalism, I suggest you take your time and money elsewhere.

My family and I just finished a fabulous week vacation in New Orleans. My daughter had to get corn rows while she was there. My friends recommended Beauty on the Bayou as it was in their neighborhood. I was just expected basic braiding, Nita went above and beyond our expectations! My daughters hair is truly a work of art. The lovely ladies in the shop also shared their truly amazing Katrina stories. It will be hard to find a place to match the expertise and the warm southern hospitality in California.
