Singapore Grill and Sushi Bar

I went here with my husband because I was in the area and thought, mmm, sushi, and boy do I regret it. As soon as I pulled up, the owner (Sonny) ran out to talk to me or something. Kind of over-​friendly and weird. We got a table outside, which was the only good thing about this place, except that Sonny would not leave us alone the entire time we were there. He sat next to us THE WHOLE TIME and wouldn’t stop trying to upsell his fancy sushi. I like sushi and I don’t need fancy expensive sushi — if it’s good, it doesn’t need to have a ton of crap on it. Anyway, I haven’t even gotten to the food.
The sushi was not even mediocre. The salmon was sort of an off-​white beige color, unlike any salmon I’ve ever seen. Tasted awful. All of it tasted awful. Kind of thought maybe we should stop eating it and just get the hell out of there, but I’ve never done that before and it would be pretty awkward with the owner sitting next to us trying to sell us shit. For some reason we ate it anyway and I felt pretty sick all day. We both had diarrhea the next couple days.
My husband mentioned to his co-​workers that he’d went to this place and they were all like «Oh, THAT place…»
DON’T GO TO THIS PLACE, NO MATTER HOW BADLY YOU WANT SUSHI (unless you like over-​priced sushi that tastes/​smells bad and enjoy having diarrhea). I’m really surprised this place is still in business.

I had eaten there several times, and each time was good, though a bit expensive. I liked it enough to overlook that. Then the last time I was there, the food was taking forever, so my friend and I told the waitress we were going out for a cigarette in the mean time. We came back in only a couple minutes later, and our table had been cleared of our drinks and silverware. She said «Okay!’ when we told her where we were going, sooooo what happened there? They begrudgingly set us up again and still had to wait. It finally came out, and for $ 75 it didn’t seem like nearly enough food. I give it 2 stars because the food is pretty good, but definitely not as good as they seem to think it is (or charge for)

#2 restaurant in New London? Who voted for this? First, the place is tiny, the booths are all ripped and the neighborhood is lacking. Second, we waited for nearly 10 minutes to be seated with the sushi maker just staring at us… meanwhile, there were only 2 tables occupied! The food is NOT good and super overpriced! I still don’t know what I just paid $ 66 for! We didn’t have the sushi, but what we did have would’ve tasted better had I gone to the supermarket and cooked it myself at home for ¹⁄₃ of the price. I don’t know who thinks this place is great, but you want my advise, save yourself the trouble and money…

Love this place some of the best Sushi I have ever had and anything I have ordered here has been great. Definitely try the Chase Roll or The Foxy Lady Roll. the owner Sonny is a great guy and good conversation.

It’s conveniently located. The owner is very friendly. If this is what you’re looking for in a restaurant, then this might be your place!
BUT…
The food is average to subpar. The price is very high for the quality and the quantity. It’s not a super clean place which is something I want when I’m eating raw food. The owner is pushy and annoyingly overly friendly. He does the hard sell which is also something I“m not looking for in a restaurant experience.
I’ve been twice and both times the owner has found a reason to come and talk to me at my car. Would he do this if my husband was with me? It’s creepy and unprofessional.

I brought 20 people on my karate team at 930 at night. Sunny whipped together tables for us, threw down some appetizers and stuffed us with food. The whole time we were there he entertained us with stories from Singapore and kept us laughing the whole time. The service was personal and quick, the appetizers and entrees were delicious and the one man show named «sunny» (the owner) made it a fantastic experience. Don’t miss this gem of a restaurant!

Great service, it’s hard to find a wait staff that’s as friendly as here. Sunny the owner is very active and will go above and beyond to please the costumer.
Daily specials and excellent prices are a plus as well

Have been here many times for both Chinese & sushi dishes. Eat in & take out. The staff is friendly & the food is delicious. Lunch portions are the perfect size. Quality is very consistent.

One of the more known sushi restaurants in the area. It was weird to walk in the restaurant after sometime and hear to patrons at the sushi counter talking about *getting this place back on the map.*

The ambiance is great. Nice, never too packed. The restaurant is small, but spread out fairly nice. I think the heater was broken when I went because it was freezing inside! Music levels are perfect for conversing but also singing along.
The owners are very pleasant, they will always explain new dishes, or specials and answer any questions if you are trying a new menu item.
Well the food is great. I am a fan of the noodle soup, always have been. Nice healthy shrimps, somewhat smaller scallops, but I am ok with them.
The sushi and sashimi portions have reduced greatly in size. I understand that everyone cuts back here and there, but the portions are ½ the size of comparable restaurants near-​by. Kind of pricey too if you are looking at it from that perspective; am I getting my moneys worth? Eh.
Singapore is a fan fav. of many, and has a great location, so I dont see it going anywhere. But with the ever changing times and economy, let the consumer at least justify spending their hard earned money on the food, and not questioning their decison to dine here.

The food was mediocre, but since they have vegan option and my GF is vegan, I would have been back, except for one thing. The owner keeps the servers tips and pays them $ 10 per hour. This both illegal and unethical. After receiving great service, I gave a tip of more than 20%, only to find out from another regular customer that Sonny, the owner, keeps the tips.
I have called the CT Department of Labor. I hope that he is fined and made to pay damages to his staff.
