The Hearth

This place has so much potential, but it was only a three-​star experience. My review cites the good and the not so good. All, in all, not bad, but I probably won’t go back as it was overpriced and no better than a meal I can make at home.
This is a cozy restaurant. They play excellent music (like Traveling Wilburys and Bob Dylan).
They specialize in vegetarian, so I had a chickpea burger, with a side salad. It was a little dry, as was the salad. They are chintzy with the dressing; you could barely taste it.
The best was the dessert. Raw Chocolate Mousse: avocado, cashew, cacao, agave blend topped with raspberries and toasted coconut. [I make a similar pudding at home with frozen acai, banana, honey and avocado. It sounds weird, but the avocado gives it the pudding consistency and it really does taste like pudding!]
My husband had the Flourless Chocolate Torte which is gluten free. I had a taste and it was very rich.
The Ethiopian coffee was perfect. (But again, chintzy when it came to creamer. My husband and I ordered the big pot, which gave us two cups each … the creamer they gave my husband was barely enough to fill one cup. We asked for more and the waitress gave us half of a half of a little cup! WTF?)
Upstairs is nice and cozy, with a beautiful stained glass window, though with the acoustics, it’s a shame it’s too loud and you can hear conversations at everyone’s tables — even a soft whisper sounds loud. Luckily we were able to enjoy the dessert portion of our meal when a foursome left and only another quiet couple were upstairs with us.
The bathroom was very clean and I liked that they used biodegradable cruelty free soap (Method) as some places have clean food but go cheap on the bathroom soap.

My husband and I came here last night as we have always had such a great dining experience at The Hearth. Last night we decided that either they changed chefs or had an off night. I ordered the leek dip, (which I ordered gluten free) it was bland and had a mushy texture. I also had mussels in a curry sauce, which was watery and bland aw well. The zucchini rolls were pretty good. My husband had the salmon and potato chowder which in visits past, were phenomenal, last night it was watery and bland. His crab cakes were flavorless as well. We also each ordered the chia seed dessert which again was delicious before this time, it was dry and honestly, gross. We took two bites (took them home) and threw both away. We both didn’t feel well today, like whatever we ate last night didn’t sit well.

We were back for the 3^rd time last night and every time has been excellent. The salads, gazpacho, and scallops (with fruits and jasmine rice) were fantastic. I’ll definitely have the pear tart again. Service couldn’t have been better! Great to have a place that knows how to do good vegetarian dishes and fish too.

No. Just no. If you are in town for Labor Day Weekend 2015 and read this: Don’t go. Detailed review to follow. I checked every one-​star review for this restaurant so that no future diners are subjected to these poor dining experiences.

One of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. The place was empty at prime time on a Friday night. My husband and I briefly debated whether to bail and go somewhere else. But then we agreed that vegetarian restaurants may not be the most popular. So in we went! A man, who we later found out was the owner, was hunched over his laptop at the bar. No greeting, no acknowledgement of us. Wine glasses were given to us by an indifferent hostess, with no corkscrew or offer to open the wine. A cute but clearly inexperienced server answered our questions and took our order.
I would like to report on the food, but other than our mediocre appetizers of avocado crostini and ceviche, we never got any! After a 45 minute wait we were told that «something got shuffled» in the kitchen and they were making our entrees now. Really? Although a few other people had trickled in, we had been the first ones there!
The hostess offered more appetizers on the house, but my husband said «we’re outta here!» Upon offering his credit card to the owner on the way out, he declined it. At least he did not make us pay for this poor experience.
There are plenty of options in New Hope. Cross this one off your list.

Had a wonderful dinner. I had the crab cakes and my wife had the eggplant rolitini. Preceded by the crab salad. Everything, including the service was great. Definitely come back and recommend it.

Food was excellent! We got the muscles and salmon burger and were very happy with them both. Service kinda slow, but would return.

We just had our second child, so imagine our excitement at a kidless date night. Looking for something local, and deciding to discount the negative Unilocal feedback, we gave this restaurant a chance. Red flag number one is showing up to a restaurant at 7:30 on a Friday night and being one of three occupies tables. Red flag number two is walking into said restaurant, and no one there to greet you. After seveal minutes passed, a grump, who I will assume is the owner asked us if we had a reservation and grunted to the waitress that we were to be taken to table 11. Now, if you have not been in the restaurant before, there are a few tables downstairs with a huge fireplace and than several more upstairs in a dark, uninviting dining room. We were taken upstairs, and shame on me for not asking to change this.
Seating issues aside, we sat down looked at the menus and the waitress stopped over. She dropped off an ice bucket for the wine, not offering to open the bottle or pour us initial glasses, Red flag number 3. My wife had several questions about the menu items, and we are frequently those sort of diners who ask servers for suggestions since they see what dishes sell and what feedback is. Red flag number 4, was after being asked about dishes on the menu, the waitress repeating the printed description. It was actually so amusing, i asked about a few other dishes just to see if it would change.
So, order is in, food comes… Red flags 5 – 6 are just for the really underwhelming food from salad to entrée. The beets on the sald were hardly roasted as advertised and the avocadco crustini appetizer was so cold, it must have been sitting in a prep fridge for hours, just based on the oxidized color of the avocado alone. The entrees were further uninspiring, with my salmon steak being an exercise in eye sight. Try finding tiny bones by candle light… brutal. When the best thing you can say about a dish is that the salmon skin was crispy, its a below average meal. It sucks wasting a night when time is at a premium, it sucks paying $ 78 for dinner, when my wife and I have created better meals at home, and we can sit near the fireplace.

Very flavorless seafood dishes. I took my grandmother out for dinner because I was visiting and this was a huge disappointment. I got the mahi mahi which came with this parsnip and celery crap mash. The fish was slimy and tasted as if it was seasoned with a dash of salt and depression. My poor grandmother got their tuna steak which was cooked to a dry canned like perfection and the rice that came with it tasted as if it was steamed uncle bens but twenty minutes too long then more water added to remove any possibility of flavor. I’d say you’re better off dumpster diving. Someone may have thrown away some pizza. On top of that its expensive. Their advocado toast is good though… That’s impossible to mess up. That’s what the one star is for.

Pros: farmhouse-​chic ambience and décor, many vegan and gluten free options, vegetable stack was delicious
Cons: service was slow, salads underwhelming, all food overpriced, dessert menu distinctly lackluster
If you choose to go here, I strongly recommend avoiding the butternut squash risotto, which for $ 20 provided a hearty portion of rice, but only haphazard chunks of squash and no additional vegetable or garnish.

Excellent food. If ur vegetarian or veganu will feel right at home. If not, thats also ok cause they have GREAT seafood dishes.

The Hearth is getting two stars few reasons:
1. The service was sooo slow. I came with a group of 4 on a Monday night, and we stayed over 2 ½ hours and not just by choice. It was slowwww. There was only one server and more than a few tables so she either needed help or just was not being very efficient. This also needs to be considered a fault of the kitchen as well though.
2. I was not aware that Monday night was prix-​fixe and it is for the time being… I was really looking forward to trying a lot of tasty stuff on the menu and I couldn’t because of the limited options. The prix-​fixe was not impressive and the entrée was only two options.
3. I went with the quinoa entrée and it was bland. I could maybe see myself being happy with it served as a side and definitely not a main course.
4. The miso soup app. (I did not get this myself but tried it) was also very bland and left a lot to be desired
5. The other entrée option, that people in my party chose, was a soup/​seafood dish and it was overly salted (the only dish we received that was overly spiced at all)
A few positive aspects I found though:
1. The building is beautiful, rustic, and cozy. Perfect for the lovely fall evening I was in the restaurant
2. The flat bread appetizer I had, with beets, yams or sweet potatoes (don’t recall which) and a base of goat cheese was very nice. Not the best flat bread I’ve ever had by any means, but I did enjoy it and thought it had pleasant taste to it
3. The two small bites options we got for the table before the prix-​fixe menu began, were probably the best part of our meal that evening: the Chimichurri avocado toasts were very light and citrusy and the Halloumi was my favorite part of the night. The grilled watermelon aspect was a nice change and it was refreshing and went well with the goat/​sheep milk cheese and basil mint oil.

We had a terrific lunch here earlier today. All of the options sounded delicious, but we went for the black bean quinoa burger and the pulled squash sandwich. Both were excellent, and came with side greens in a delicious dressing. The desserts– we had the flourless chocolate torte and pear almond tart — were spectacular. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

This place was great! My wife and I went there for our one-​year anniversary and we absolutely loved it. The rustic ambiance was good, and the food was even better. From our appetizers through our entrees, you could tell that everything was cooked fresh. We left full but not feeling full. Nothing like a tasty, healthy meal to toast to a year of marital bliss! Will definitely be back.

We were walking around New Hope looking for a place to eat when we stumbled across The Hearth. We read the Unilocal reviews and were excited for a great meal. I have to say this is the first time Unilocal disappointed us. Everything we ate here was average. They recommended the bouillabaisse which seemed good from the description. It was somewhat disappointing mainly because the broth was fairly bland though they did give you bread with the meal which is nice for dipping. My girlfriend got the mushroom pot pie which was ok. Again, nothing special. Their lemonade was very refreshing. This place definitely has potential but I think they need to lower their prices or work on adding more flavor to their dishes. The service was very good as they were quick with our food and polite.

Whoa! Surpriiiise! Hearth was delicious! So my wife and I biked the canal path to wine, dine and stay the night in Lambertville/​New Hope. We looked up «best restaurants in New Hope» and Hearth came in at 7 out of 25, so honestly, my expectations were not terribly high but it appealed to my wife’s pescatarian diet. We brought a bottle and entered a very old (seemingly historic) home, converted into a restaurant. Small, quaint, charming.
We started with their version of «no broth» French onion soup. Simply scrumptious. Yes, it was served on a plate, no broth. Carmalized onions, melted creamy, nutty gruyère cheese over thick cuts of pumpernickel toast, topped with fresh arugula and porter-​chedder sauce. (Get it?) We also shared potato gnocchi. Would you believe me if I said it was fulfilling but a «light» dish? The gnocchi was accompanied with fresh veggies like mushrooms and asparagus and a nice hint of garlic and ricotta cheese.
For mains, my lovely wife had their special: mussels and shrimp. The red broth had an excellent flavor, think Manhattan clam but way more complex and savory. However, we both agreed that it needed at least a hint of spice. We love spicy food but this had absolutely no heat. Another disappointing thing was that it did not come with any bread. I imagined just one piece of grilled French bread to sop up the delicious broth. I ordered the Salmon dish. So… I won! The salmon was cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy, the fish was moist and I tasted the nice seasoned rub with every light, flaky bite. The salmon sat over a bed of grilled asparagus and little bites of roasted red potatoes. The salmon was topped with a velvety eggplant purée. It was so good, I only offered our traditional first bite to my wife. By the time I finished my plate, I realized that I forgot to share any more.
Service is very friendly and attentive.
4 out of 5 because of the spice, lack of bread with the special but I look forward to going back. Strongly recommend!

What is with all the great reviews??? I don’t get it. The food is edible but the price? We had the gnocchi small plate at 14 dollars. At 14 dollars, that to me is an entrée price but the portion was small. The beet salad was small too and it was priced at 10. The white bean soup was nothing special at 6 dollars. Other restaurants would have priced it at 3 for the cup they gave us. My boy friend’s bouillabaisse entrée was good but he was left hungry. My seafood special which was 2 scallops with muscles in yellow curry sauce with rice that was not cooked properly was 32 dollars!
Didn’t order any drinks and it’s BYOB but the bill was over 100 dollars including tip. Sorry but this is a $$$$ restaurant with average food! We are not big eaters, we are not fat and we are not picky. WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING! WHAT A RIP OFF!!!

Seriously good. On principle I am against all vegetarian things. But this place offers seafood, so it’s ok. :)
That said, I only ordered vegetarian things. A French onion rarebit (cheese toast). And a wild mushroom pot pie. Spectacular. Really.
The room is amazing. 19^th century stone house, on the bank of the Delaware River. Inside is wood beams and a fireplace (and it smells amazing — wood smoke). And they have outside seating.
Top it all off, it’s byob. Which I love. Servers were fantastic and friendly.
I will be back to this place.

This would have been a 5 star review if our server wasn’t so grumpy! She was unpleasant and changed our experience of this place, we all had fun anyway and as the night went on it became a source of joke at just how unhelpful she was.
It’s BYOB so that’s great too.
A group of 4 of us enjoyed a variety of items on their delicious menu. It is a cute spot, great choice especially for my GF friends. I ordered the hummus and crudités which was OK but I wouldn’t do it again, it wasn’t anything special however the olives they served with it were delish.
For my main I decided upon two small plates: the halloumi cheese with greens and rubarb jam (OMG divine) and also the white and green asparagus. The dipping sauce for the asparagus was delicious. The Halloumi was grilled to perfection.
One of my friends (the only vegetarian in our party) enjoyed the mushroom pot pie and I had a little sample… delish (not a GF option because of the puff pastry topping) but the base of the dish was great. My honey ordered the bouillobaise and he thought the seafood tasted as if it had been frozen before cooking. He did really enjoy his beet salad.
We split a flourless chocolate torte for dessert which was rich and OK — I really should have ordered the chia seed pudding (as I love that and heard great things. maybe next time).

Wonderful, fun, yet sophisticated restaurant. Lives up to its name with the warm-​feeling interior, and positive vibes from the servers!
Food is good to great with a hearty selection of salads, risottos, fish, and meat courses. I really enjoyed the winter salad.
But there’s a secret…
They have the best vegan dessert ever. It’s called the chia seed pudding and contains chia seeds, whipped cashew butter, blueberries, raisins and shaved almonds. It’s like a ball of vegan awesome.
There is outside seating, a scenic upstairs, and a more casual downstairs area. It is BYOB, and located on a scenic spot near the Delaware.
